FWIW, I don't think it is a 3.0.5-specific problem, since I have the
same card (on a RH5.2 system, though) and it has always worked
correctly.

Sometimes, the problem is that the card controller picks an unsafe
interrupt to monitor the status changes and the cards stop working. In
this case, forcing the driver to use polling mode usually does the
job.

Bye.

I've had problems with the Viper 550 with XFree86 3.3.2 so got the 3.3.3,
they say they support RIVA TnT (SVGA) but at x startup he deletes all the
modes "800x600" "1024x786" .... and leaves me with the built-in "300x320"
mode. My monitor settings are 100 %, because I tried every single one
possible. .... so if anyone knows the trick.... Thanks !

Subject: Flickering with STB Velocity 4400 on X
Date: Sat, 26 Dec 1998 11:57:17 GMT

Hi,

I've been trying to make the STB Velocity 4400 (nVidia RivaTNT chip) work on
XFree86 3.3.3 under Linux. The server works alright... however, I get some
flickering under X at all resolutions and all color depths. Also, under
console mode, whenever there is a full color background (e.g. using
mouseconfig), I also see some flickering. The card works perfectly well
under Windows98, so I think it is not a hardware problem. Anyone seen
similar things happen on their TNT cards?

Hardware configuration:
Abit BH6 motherboard
Celeron 300A @ 450MHz
128M PC100 SDRAM
Ensoniq Vivo90 soundcard
Quantum Fireball EX 12.7G HD
Toshiba 32X CDROM.

Running Rawhide 1.1.9 (kernel 2.1.131, XFree86 3.3.3, glibc2)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suggests to use setserial command to set proper IRQ and IO ports on
/dev/cua1. By the way make sure that your serial port ( to which
modem is connected ) is managed by /dev/cua1.

Hi,
Where I work we use HP and Toshiba kit. I work in the IT department and we
have been told that as far as HP are concerned 'Deskjet printers are for
personal use only'. Many of their drivers will only install to a hard disc.
They caused us a lot of grief when we used to run win3.1 off our network.
This is why HP will not support them on a network. They assume Unix is only
used on a company network and that Linux MUST be the same.
However all is not lost. I have an old HP Deskjet 500c printer and am trying
to get it to work. A number of people have emailed me about this and are
sending the required files.
I am sure it is possible to get yours to work. Keep an eye on this newsgroup.
When i get mine working I will send you the details. It has to do with using
the correct printcap and filter files.

Hello,

I have built a *hot* linux box. But it has now got a problem with which
I hope someone can help me :)

I installed a ICP vortex SCSI controller and a NCR83xxx SCSI controller
both are pci, ide is off.

When I did the installation the only drive connected was a Ultra2 SCSI
on the ICP vortext.

The install went fine, assigning the drive id *sda*.

I then connected a cdrom, and 5 Jaz drives to the NCR controller.

The linux letter now on the *boot* drive moved from *sda* to *sdf*

I then disconnected all the drives on the NCR controller, rebooted and
got going again.

I then edit lilo.conf to change the device all reference from *sda* to
*sdf*. I also changes the *fstab* file in the same way. I ran
/sbin/lilo.

Thinking I was homefree I smiled and rebooted. It got further but I
think it's failing on trying to mount the swap.

Any help, would be appreciated, I'm up and going again, just with the
one Ultra2 drive.

Is there a way to tell linux to use the ICP controller as controller
zero and the NCR controller as controller 1, then the machine would keep
the letttering straight.

Thanks

Jack

I am amazed at the speed and the accuracy of the answers I am getting frm
this newsgroup. I thank all of you.

Here is my problem (and bear in mind - I am a novice with Linux):
I have a Sparc 1+ machine that has no CD-ROM but only a tape drive. The
machine right now has an old SunOS installed on it and it is on my LAN at
home. I am trying to get Linux on it and I am presently downloading the
CD-ROM content from the RedHat ftp server. I understand I can create a
Linux boot floppy on my DOS machine and then use it for a CD-ROM
installation. But I don't have a CD-ROM. I have an FTP server on my
Windows NT machine on the same LAN and I wonder if Linux can install itself
from the FTP. In the instructions I see a network install procedure but I
know I will get stuck at the NFS on another machine - I don't have it. So,
what are my chances?

Thanks in advance,
Jordan

Some BIOSes just see up to 64Megs of your RAM. You have three
possibilities.
a) Add the line append="mem=128M" to your lilo kernel section,
b) If you are booting with loadlin from DOS or lilo from the prompt you can
specify the "mem=128M" directly on the command line, i.e. "loadlin <your
image> <root device> ro mem=128M" or at the LILO
prompt: lilo: <type in your image> mem=128M
c) Upgrade to a new kernel. The newer kernels (I'd say above 2.1.110) see
all the memory and you don't need to do anything special here.

Cheers,
