I had the same problem with a Hewlett Packard P90. I was able to from cd rom by
using a program called "CD-ROM God" which is basically a boot disk with
several cd drivers. Down load from www.games-online.com However now that I
have redhat 5.0 loaded when I boot it still fails at mounting the cdrom drive
(in reality it locks up and I have to reboot which takes right back to the
problem) any suggestions?

Hello All,
I've tried to be as descriptive as possible, so forgive me if u think
this posting is too long.
I recently installed RedHat Linux 5.2 on my Gateway G6-400 and
ran Xconfigurator. I figured out that my Video Card
(Ensoniq AGP 16384K, that I got directly from Gateway) was
not supported by XFree86. So I downloaded XBF_i740 from your
ftp server and installed the package. I also downloaded the
new xf86config and ran it to configure my system. I checked my
video card documentation for all the required information. I made sure
that I selected the correct mouse (MicroSoft Intellimouse (PS/2
compatible)). I checked to make sure the file XF86Config and the links
were all correct.
On running startx, I got an X Window that had a huge screen
area and my mouse was always kept jumping in the left top
corner of my screen. I also couldn't change resolutions using
Ctrl-Alt-+.
I tried killing gpm and restarting startx, but it didn't
work. I have enclosed the log file I got on running startx.

Every time my NEC laptop does an fsck I get a bunch of "uncorrectable"

something like "short read in inode scan".
I'm running kernel 2.1.132, but I get the same thing with 2.0.33. Anyone
know what this is?

I have a Tyan Tomcat III with 2 P5-166's (old style, not MMX) and I had
no problems getting SMP to work. I really haven't seen a speed
increase, but I haven't done any thing CPU intensive yet. (Of course,
my system is bound by using an old Adaptec AHA-1542CF that won't go
above 8Mb/s transfer because of some old hardware...)
If you can, try to find either an old Socket 7 motherboard or someone
who can patch the Celeron-A processors for SMP, because going dual on a
Pentium II is going to be expensive.
Just my $0.02 worth.

You have to mod the chips. See http://www.bxboards.com
I've got 2 here running 2.1.131 kernel at 463mhz. So far so good, make
-j's on kernels and such without errors.

The Diamond FirePort 40 Dual works find. There is even support in the
2.0.36 kernel that I default boot to, and the 2.1.131 kernel that I am
expirimenting with. And I haven't had any conflicts with the other SCSI
adapter in my system, an Adaptec AHA-1542CF.

The support for the ncr53c8xx chipset. I have the same board in my
machine and it recognizes the card just fine. I am using menuconfig to
configure my kernel, and have set the option for Symbios Logic
compatability. Smybios Logic is the company that was spun off by NCR to
handle the microchip manufacturing.

Subject: Corrupt partition table and only L when booting.
Date: Sun, 27 Dec 1998 11:51:26 +0100
Hello.
I tried to install Redhat Linux 5.2. I created two partitions. One
native as / (root) and another on my second harddrive as swap.
The installation seemed to work out fine. When it was time to reboot I
did so. Then I only got the first letter in LILO boot. A "L" and the
system crashed/hanged.
I thought that only the LILO boot wasn't installed correctly. I tried to
install Redhat Linux 5.2 again. Full installation again, and on the same
partitions. But this didn't help, same result. Then I wrote fdisk /mbr
at my two harddrives and restored everything as it was before the
installation, without any LILO boot.
Then I thought that the LILO boot was destroyed at the CD with Redhat
Linux 5.2 so I decided to install Redhat Linux 5.0 and upgrade that
version to 5.2. I created a startdisk and tried to install 5.0. When I
came to the part where you choose to use "Diskdruid" I got a warning
message:
"The partition table on device hda is corrupted to create new partitions
it must be initialized, causing the loss of ALL DATA on this drive"
The first drive, hda is the drive which I run Win 95 from. It seem to
work :), but something is probobly wrong. I couldn't boot 5.2 and 5.0
refuses to use my old partitions. The partition which I used for Linux,
on my first drive (hda) has never been formatted under DOS or Win 95 or
any OS. It comes directly from the factory. Maybe there is a small error
on the disk?
Do I have to initialize my harddrive and lose ALL DATA? In that case I
have buy I CD-rom writer first... :)
I would really appreciate some help.
Thanks!

Not sure, maybe with Wabi you can... Anyone know for certain?
This is fairly easy with OS/2's Win-OS/2 as some WinPrinters can operate

Almost any serial external modem should work and will be the least hassle
to set up. Among internal modems, the easiest to use are ISA cards with
"legacy jumpers," i.e. not just Plug and Play. Two that come to mind are
the Zoom 2919 dualmode and the Hayes Accura dualmode ISA modems. Avoid
the 56K PCI modems.
You can use the web to get an idea of prices. For example, here's a page
of competitors' prices for the Zoom 2949 external dualmode:

My suggestion is buy Modems that don't call themselves Winmodems, when
they don't work -- return them and complain, call the manufacturor and
complain. Bean counters count the cost of this stuff. The margins are so
slim, the cost of making a Winmodem will grow beyond the cost of stock
modems. We win.

Subject: Help! Kernel 2.0.36: SCSI CDrom lockup; aic7890 uw2-scsi onboard
controller.....
Date: Sun, 27 Dec 1998 12:46:55 GMT
Dear Linux Community,
I wonder if you can help me out with my SCSI CDRom problems. My latest,
all-singing, all-dancing 2.0.36 Linux kernel behaves like a real charm...
if I do *not* use my UltraPlex 32x SCSI cdrom, that is.
Mounting (mount -r -t ISO9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt) works fine.
ls -laR /mnt does well too. However as soon as I actually copy files from
the cdrom, the struggle begins: Linux does copy a few bytes (sometimes even
large chunks) of the file, then starts to lock up (most of the time, as
soon as the cdrom drive speed decelerates and stabilizes to like 12x) - the
lock up continues for about 10 seconds until a SCSI timeout message
arrives, at which the kernal decides to reset all SCSI devices and try
again. These retrys usually end up in an I/O error, drive not ready error,
and the suchlike.
Small files tend to have a much bigger chance of being copied from the CD
than big files, for some unknown reason.
I compiled my kernel myself, I tried every options I could, yes boot
options too, I edited /linux/drivers/aic7xxx.c and changed some #define
lines, all to no avail. The lockup problem prevails.
Speaking of which, as soon as I mount my cdrom, kernel tells me
"Synchronous Transfer, 20 mb/sec". Like i never have a chance to select
between asynchronous/synchronous transfer? [Yes I might change that in the
SCSI bios....]
Anyway, I am really out of clues, so any advice is greatly appreciated. I
hope you can help, and I'd appreciate to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Alex
