Check out the sane-scsi and sane-mustek man pages, but I believe you've b=

Hi,

Could you tell a Linux newbie what to do with the draco patch? I'm trying
to install redhat6.0. Linux won't recognize my Quantum Fireball KA 9.1
harddrive if I plug it into the HPT366 controller on my BE6 mainboard so I
am going to try to install it under the regular IDE controller and then
trying to apply the patch before moving it back into the HPT366
controller.

Hi

I'm driving an SGI fixed frequency monitor from my P166 via a Mirage
Xtreme3D PCI fixed freq. card that uses the 3DLabs Permedia 2 chipset.

I'm about to install Redhat 5.2, but their hardware compatibility lists
dont mention a server for it directly.

Anyone know of a suitable X server, or where I look for one?

Thanks

I know SMC, Intel, and 3COM make great cards, but I'm a home/university
student user. Is it worth shelling out an extra $60 for one of those cards?
Does any know if the OEM boxed versions are good to buy? Or is it better to
buy a retail boxed Netgear or Linksys?

>From what I've read in the past few days, Netgear and Linksys used to run on
the Digital Tulip chip. Now they use these cheapo clones it seems from no
name companies.

How are Netgear and Linksys? Linksys is having a back to school sale now and
an EtherFast PCI card (100BaseTX) is only about $11 after rebate. That is an
extremely enticing deal for a student strapped for cash. A bus mastering PCI
card kicks NE2000 ass (I have a NE2000, works great at home, sucks in the
dorms)

Would such a card be sufficient for my needs? (occasional web browsing, file
transfers, remote logins, x redirects, forwarding) I'm not planning to use
my computer as a server, nor do I require mission critical reliability.

        VFS: Mounting root...

Any ideas ( please before 2am MET )

Subject: how to get a fastest linux box ?
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 21:29:05 GMT

what is the right way to get a fastest linux box ?
(I mean quad processor or octal processor whatever,
UDMA-66 disk, etc) is there right box vendor or
should we have to do it by ourselves ? (I don't mind
assembling one) If DIY is not the best way, which vendors
are reliable and good ? If DIY is the best way,
.. which components are the best ? such as:

motherboard(this may end up with dummy backbone for
        some configuration)
CPU(intel pII[I][-Xeon] or Celeron ? K6[2|3] or K7 ? Cyrix ? Winchip ?)
memory if it makes any difference ?
disk ?

I don't think anything else would make any difference
in computing speed.

price/performance is also very important. So fancy $30k alpha
single processor is out of range.
This machine is going to be used for massive floating point
number crunching such as huge sparse matrix solving. So no multimedia
support is necessary.

You want the Ensonic 1370 sound chip driver enabled. I have the same
sound card as well. Kernels before 2.2.7 did not support this card, and the
drivers were improved (I think) sometime between 2.2.8 and 2.2.9 Either
that, or you can use the OSS drivers provided with SuSE. Personally, I would
rather use the kernel drivers as opposed to any commercial source. Read the
help with the menuconfig option - I think it tells you run cat /proc/pci and
look for a certain string, which verifies which sound chip you have.
Personally, I think they should append the list of commercial sound cards
which use the chip in question. It makes it a lot easier for novices to
figure out which driver they should use.

I have a working software ide raid0 running under the RedHat 2.2.5-22
kernel. I decided to upgrade to 2.2.11 because of some driver issues.
So I rebuilt the new kernel with the raid0 module and all, but now I can
not get it to mount.

If I reboot into 2.2.5-22 everything is fine. The raid0 module is
loading from the initrd.img file but the system doesn't seem to be able
to put it together.

I took the /dev/md0 out of the fstab so it would not break at boot, and
tried to load it manually. 'Raidstart /dev/md0' comes back with an
'Invalid argument' error? I ran the 'mkraid --upgrade /dev/md0' but it
was happy with the setup and made no changes.

I'm sure that this is all my mistake, but for the life of me I can't
figure out where I screwed up.

Anyone run into this?

Try www.ebay.com, computers, motherboards. Search for "Video sound
ethernet" in Hardware/motherboards, titles and descriptions. I got 10
matches.

There are several manufacturers of this style board that I've seen
lately. Unfortunately, none had what I was looking for which was NTSC
video out. If you happen to find one with NTSC output, LET ME KNOW.

Everything works fine under Windoze. Anybody got a clue as to what
mighht be wrong?

Also, the installation instructions are confusing. It appears to first
set it up as a plugin then tells you to set it up as a helper app. So I
wondering what set of instructions go with the two options.

Discard the supplied SCSI card and get a 'real' one, a cheap NCR810 card
will perform much, much better than the 'enhanced printer port SCSI card'
which comes with this scanner. You probably noticed you can't even move the
mouse while scanning (under Windblows) because of the polling system the
driver has to use since the card has no IRQ line..

Other usable SCSI cards: the reasonable cheap TekRam PCI scsi-2 card. (they
even supply Linux support on their ftp server, one of the first brands I
encountered mentioning Linux in their manuals)

Don't buy the ISA based Adaptec cards, performance will be much slower than
the PCI ones. And a scanner produces lots and lots of megabytes.
Adaptecs PCI cards (like 2940) are ok, but quite expensive though.

A scanner on a slow SCSI card will turn your Linux (and Windows) system
into a single tasking scanner system... :)
