Sounds like you've set up the monitor wrong or the video card isn't compat
with XFree86, definitely not an IRQ conflict. check out XFree86's website
and make sure your card is compatable. If it is, go thru the setup process
again and set it up the way it should be (should find the info on XFree86's
website as well).

X will not run certain progams at certain colors or if you are a regular
user and not root/su, then you will not be able to run certain programs as
well there either. privileges and what vid_mode the program was written for
are key factors...

You can change a good many IRQ things around in the BIOS, but I do not
recommend mucking around there unless you REALLY know what you are doing.
Anyway, you can turn off the IRQ for video in there...

Adam

Also, a little on posting protocols -- try keeping the amount of posts to a
minimum. ie, send to comp.os.linux.hardware and not all the rest also. Your
wasting space on all the different servers for one question and many people
won't answer questions because of that...

Subject: SoundBlaster 16 Waveffects
Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 13:24:14 -0500

Hey all. I've been wrestling with this for a day, and I'm not gwtting
anywhere. I have the SB 16 Waveffects card, which I'm assuming is SB16
compatible (if it isn't then I guess I'm SOL.) Anyhoo, set up the SB16
in the kernel (2.0.36) re-compiled, I've been using 2 conifigurations
without success...

>From Windows...

Set blaster= a240 i10 d1 h1 p300 t6

and the default

a220 i5 d1 h5 p330

Supposely my sound card does not support DMA 5-7 (only the CT4181 does,
I have the SB4171) both irq's 5 & 10 are open on my system.

Neither one kicks in like it should. Do I have to use the PnP utils or
am I missing something? cat /dev/sndstat give good feedback (minus the
audio device info, of course.)

What next?

In the computer lab I use, we had a p150 with 32MB running as a
web/ftp/dns/samba/quake server, and it ran like a dream!
I was going to suggest a fast 486, but then I saw your MP3 line. You'll
need a pentium class machine, but I'd say anything over a p100 with 32 MB
or better ought to do you fine.
( our server was serving 20+ clients, not including quake, which was open
to the internet! We once accidentally ran another quake server, and didn't
notice till the end of the day, when we were shutting down! )

What is the chipset? The howto's give very good info on specific cards.

When you boot, you see this eth0 message? You must have some support compiled
into the kernel.

Try re-compiling your kernel, with the settings for your card in particular.

Try:

or
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
I could not get ne2000 to recognize mine, and mound up
using one of the above (the nasa one I believe).
Good luck.

To add:

The xeon has an L2 cache that runs at core speed, rather than 1/2 core like the
PII
They can also be run as Multiple processors of 4 or more. ( the PII restricts you
to two processors )

So yes, they are definitely for servers ( but I still want a quad Xeon-450 !!!)

Subject: Plse Help: Creative PCI128 ???Will not work???

Hi All and thanks in advance.

Sigh. Still fighting getting this card working with less luck as times
goes on. I recently upgraded to the 2.1.131 kernel compiled that and
the sound as modules. The original system installation was RedHat 5.2.

Not sure what to include that would help, but here goes :-)

Running sndconfig gives errors after detecting the card:
It detects the card as an AUDIOPCI. Wants to play a sample sound -
fails with no error message given. Takes me to manual configuration and
asks me to select the card type with the "Ensoniq AudioPCI 1370
(SoundBlaster 64/128 PCI) - I think this card should be identified as
the following entry: Creative/Ensoniq AudioPCI 1371 (see later down the
page). Press return, it wants to play a sound to test (again) and fails
(again) with no error message(again). I select the 1371 and it goes
through wanting to play a sound again but this time fails with the
following message: /lib/modules/2.1.131/misc/es1371.o: init module:
device or resource busy. I can keep this loop up, but the only
alternative is to cancel.

I do an lsmod to see what has been loaded. Get no response. I'm not
sure, but I suspect that the lsmod utility does not work with the
2.1.131 kernet (worked under 2.0.36 OK). I attempt to: insmod es1371
and get the following:

Tried catting /dev/sndstat and got the same message I have been getting
all along when I try that:

cat: /dev/sndstat: Operation not supported by device

Under 2.0.36 I was able to play CDs, but now I am told: (using KDEs
mixer):

kmix: There is no mixer support for your system.

No sound from the CD, but according to the CD player (kscd) it is
merrily playing along :-/.

If anyone has any ideas on this, I'd sure appreciate hearing them along
with suggestions, pointers or whatever. I've been working on this
through several iterations (OSS (won't work) ALSA(?) - Not enough docs
to get it going and finally upgrading to the 2.1.131 kernel, which, in
theory, other people have gotten to work :-).

I'm out of airspeed, altitude and ideas and more than a little
frusterated with this nightmare. I am beginning to see why so many
people I know with a LOT less experience than I have with Linux/Unix
have trashed linux and gone back to the products of the evil empire
(seemed silly to me to have a soundcard have that kind of effect, but I
am beginning to understand it :-/.) I know there is something I am
missing here... I've been running Linux since the 0.91 era and have
never had any luck getting sound to work under linux (arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh
:-).

Again, Thanks!

Take care, Vikki.
