I am successfully running the 5xx/6xx driver printing to a Deskjet 890Cse. It
prints graphics, etc. from netscape with no problem at all. (in color or
grayscale)

I have my printer connected to a Bay Networks Netgear PS110 print server.
(Works with both Red Hat 5.1 and 5.2). Are you sure that you have lpd running
and that you configured all of the SMB stuff in the printconfig correctly?

Try mem=127m. Sometimes it gets confued re the initial 640k of ram, so try
127 and see how it goes. Later kernels, 2.0.36 and greater, auto detect
memory size. Cool.

Cheers.

As long as you aren't going to be using the server capabilities to the
maximum all of the time, I would take more RAM over CPU power. You *might*
be able to pull this off with 32 megs, but it would be pushing it. Better
to get 64 just in case.

I have setup 486/50 boxes with 12mb ram doing IP masquerading for 10-20
clients and it works without any problems.

Hello,
I need some help with a configuration problem with Red Hat 5.2. I'm
installing it into a Pentium-166 machine, PCI, SCSI, with a LinkSys
etherfast network card.

During boot, the machine hangs for several minutes while starting the
sendmail and httpd daemons, and locks entirely while starting snmb.
Removing the ethernet card fixes the problem and the machine boots
without error, but of course without network support.

Is there a hardware incompatibility? When entering network config, I
chose the appropriate IP address & subnet mask, but left the nameserver
options at default (perhaps this was not a good idea).

        Any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I may be reached via email at

Yes, mt 0.5 (which is shipped with RedHat 5.2) has a bug in it when you use
both -f and an argument that takes a numeric value. Either install mt 0.5b,
which is available in the contrib machine at RedHat, or use the TAPE
environment variable instead of using -f.

If you use RJ-45 10baseT connectors (ie, looks like new phone jacks), then yes
you need a hub (note 4/5 port 10baseT hubs are fairly cheap these days, my
Netgear 4 port hub was ~$30). Note, you will also need to change the cable you
are currently using, assuming it is a crossover cable, or plug it into the
uplink port on the hub (which does a second crossover). If instead you are
using thinnet (with barrel shaped connectors), I don't believe you will need a
hub.

I recently bought a Microsoft Natural Elite keyboard (Hobson's choice at the
time) and it has worked out rather well typing wise. The problem is, it
seems to slow down my computer at certain times, usually during heavy disk
access. The NUMLOCK light flashes off briefly and (unrelated) the ALPHALOCK
light (and indeed the key) only works when it feels like it. This slow down
is consistent enough for me to know that the keyboards the problem, swapping
it for another solves the problem every time.

Any ideas?

Hey all,

I just bought this modem. It has jumpers to select the "com port"
and IRQ. Alls well, I put it in my Linux box (5.1, 2.0.35) with the modem
jumpered to com 2, IRQ 3 (same as the previous modem).

I can dial out and use the modem using minicom (albeit calling a
number that is not my ISP). I've studied the command set (the manual AOpen
provided only gave a listing of the registers, I had to cop a USR manual
for a modem that uses the same chip), but when I connect to my ISP (using
pppd), my connection is not that fast, and I get booted. Modem diagnostics
state for "reason call disconnected was dropped DTR. If I disable DTR
operations, the modem cannot retrain.

Now, this modem has been flash upgraded to that v90 and my ISP
says it supports v90. The only conflict in this area is that the modem was
originally an x2 and my ISP is a kflex/v90 ISP. I don't know if that makes
a diff or not. ISP tech support is no help. AOpen says post to their
newsgroup and wait. The people I bought the modem from know nothing about
Linux (the guy actually said once they had it working under wondows 95,
they proclaimed success), sooooo...

        I guess my questions are

        1) Did I buy a winmodem =(
        2) Has anyone out there got this to work?
        3) May it be my ISP?

Thanks for all your help!!!

Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 00:44:03 GMT

I have a Sparc 1+ clone and I am trying to install RedHat Linux on it and
here is what happens:

1. I boot the machine. It comes up after test. I type: "b fd(0)" to boot
from floppy.
2. SILO Boot comes up and I hit <Return>.
3. Boot starts loading (message "Uncompressing image...". Then suddenly it
comes up with: "IDPROM: Unknown format type!" and "Program terminated" and
gets me back to the Sparc's boot command prompt (where I originally typed "b
fd(0)".

Please help, anybody.

More info:
- Sparc ROM version: 1.6c
- RedHat Linux boot image from version 5.2 for Sparc. Just downloaded it
yesterday. Tried with the latest 5.1 update, same thing happened.
- Tried to redownload and create another floppy - same thing.

I suspect my ROM is too old. Is it upgradeable? Is it downloadable from
somewhere (I have an EPROM burner)?

Thanks,

The SiS 6326 is not supported by XFree until 3.3.3

I'd suggest going to their ftp site and getting the latest XSVGA.tgz, then
untarring it in the correct spot ( tar -C /bin/X11R6 -zxf XSVGA.tgz )

Then you should be able to get the card to work properly.

I have a Dell quietkey keyboard which has sent occasional extra
backticks (the ` character) under every kernel I've run: Redhat 5.1
default (2.0.35?), 2.0.36, and 2.0.130. The backtick are infrequent,
occuring perhaps once every 1000 characters or so. They occur both
under X and in the virtual console.
Is this likely to be an actual keyboard error or is it a
motherboard or driver problem. My computer is a Dell Optiplex GXa.
If you need more information just tell me what to look for.

Anyone have any luck getting cd audio out of the
Ensoniq 1370 card?

I've tinkered with the standard options in RH5.2 and
haven't had any luck. Tried the OSS trial drivers,
and ended up with exactly the same result. Everything
is great except cd audio. Works fine outta Winduhs, though,
so it's not hardware...

I've heard I can update my kernel to one of the newest
development kernels.. but being a relative newbie, that's
not something I want to tackle quite yet when only
cd audio is at stake. Seems kind of a trivial reason
to recompile.

Any suggestions from the collective wisdom of the huddled masses?

Normally, any modem that says "Compatible/supports DOS" will work

I'm using a Riva TNT card on my system (XFree86 3.3.3) and it works like
a charm - fast too. I had some to tweak the setup a litle to make it
work for me, but it wasn't that hard. I know that performance-wise, ATI
cards can't hold a candle to nVidia's chips.

I have the ASUS v3400 .it gave me some problems at start, but now it
works - things to do :
A. get XFree86 3.3.3 - XSVGA doesn't support TNT in prior versions
B. run XF86Setup, when it asks you if you want to keep your old saying,
anser - no.
C. it will start up in vga mode. make sure our mouse and keyboard is ok.
D. go to video, and choose RIVA TNT from the card list.
E. the go to detailed configuration or something, and choose the amount
of memory you got on the card (dont probe !) it's ok to leave the probe
setting for the RAMDAC, but if it still doesn't work (after you do
everything else) try to set it manually to something low, like 90Mhz.
F. go to monitor, and choose something conservative, like a SVGA with
1024x768 at 60Hz.
G. in modes, press only 800x600 and 16bit color.
H. now run it, and you should get a picture, if not, do it all over
again with more conservative Monitor and mode selecetion ,like 800x600
at 60Hz and 640x480x8bpp.
I. after you get it to work first time, tell it to save the setup, and
rerun XF86Setup, choosing to keep your settings, and just work on the
monitor and display modes, bringing it up to the monitor type that's
your using and the modes that you like to use.

I read somewhere that it doesn't support 32bpp modes in more than
640x480, but I currently run it 1152x864x32bpp, and I can run it
1280x1024, but then my monitor only support 60hz vertical refresh which
sucks.

AFAIK, those Sound III modems have some weird kind of plug and play that
is software selectable but also stored in static RAM. Since Aztech
doesn't seem to have any information on their web site, can you try it
with <shudder> Windows and see how the address and IRQ are set?

this is because depmod/modprobe searched in the wrong dir:
/lib/modules/2.0.36/ instead of /lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7/ I solved this by
making a symbolic link from the first to the latter.

So my kernel and modules were incompatible??? I read somewere that the
kernel-image supplied with RedHat is not as "original" as it's supposed to
be(?) And indeed, after installing (over the old one) the
kernel-2.0.36-07.i386.rpm everything worked fine!!!

1.)Because this modem has no jumpers it requires special software to run.
I've yet to see a jumperless internal modem working under linux.
My advice is to ditch it and get a different modem.

2.)I don't know.. support for pci sound in linux is still slow. Odds are
good it will be supported eventually if it isn't already.

3.) The latest version of xfree86 supports the G200 chipset

Subject: What to do with a HD with bad sectors?
Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 22:10:20 +0000

Thanks to Windoze98 and a softpower switch on my ATX case, W98 has
managed to crash two different disks three times and put bad sectors on
my favourite Ultra-SCSI disk. I blame this on Winblows since I have had
my Ultra-SCSI disk for over a year and absolutely no problems. I then
upgrade my machine and get a new ATX case with a soft power switch. I
noticed a loud click from my SCSI disks whenever I shut the machine down
from Windoze. Within a week, I had a disk crash on my C: drive and a bad
sector. I immediatley suspected Windoze (as you would). I then began
restarting windoze and hitting the power switch when it was rebooting,
instead of shutting down. No problems for a few months. I then get tired
of this and begin shutting down the machine again. Within a month, I had
another disk crash on C:. So I move another physical disk to my C: and
within a month that disk crashed with a bad sector.

Has anyone else had problems with SCSI disks and Windoze? I know this is
the wrong newgroup for Windoze questions but the signal/noise ratio in
the windoze groups is poor. Also, it's leading to my next question...

What can Linux do with a disk with bad sectors? How do I map the sectors
as bad? I know that you can pass a file to mke2fs that contains a list
of the bad sectors, but how do I create this file? Is there an
equivalent of a surface-scan for Linux? I have used the '-c' option with
mke2fs but it does not seem to find my bad sectors.

Thanks for the help,
Thomas...

Subject: More than 8 GByte with IBM-DTTA-351010
Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 23:35:51 +0100

Hi,

i have put an IBM-DTTA-351010 with 10 GByte into an older Computer with
an Gigabyte HX-Motherboard (GA-586HX). The problem is, that i can only
use 8 GByte an not 9.671. With
fdisk i can only use 8Gbyte, 1027 cylinder. Can i use kernelparameter to
get the whole disk?. I am using S.u.S.E. 5.3 and kernel 2.0.36.

thanks in advance

Stefan
