If you can find an old Digiboard PC/8 it would be perfect.
The Digiboard Serial I/O products is the best choice for Linux.
With the PC/8 card you don't need any driver. Just use the setserial program
to configure each port.
Frank.

People talk about NCR/Symbios/LSI Logic SCSI controllers, but where do
they buy them? None of my usual suppliers list them.

sure it does. it's called aha-7xxx, aic-7xxx or somesuch after the
chipset. i have an adaptec 2940uw and it seems to work ok.[1]
> The 2940UW is my card of choice, so does anyone know if there is a

why insist on the 2940uw? they are good but there are others.
try mylex/buslogic bt-958
ncr has some well supported cards
check linux hardware vendors like varesearch and see what they're using
[1] when it's working, it works great as far as i can tell. the
machine boots fine from cold start or reset button. however, upon
a reboot using shutdown -r, it hangs where the scsi card bios
should be doing its thing. i have no idea why...

to install the rpm files you need to have rpm installed. It is installed
on redhat linux (if thats what you are using).
type:
rpm -i XFree86_3DFX-SVGA-3_3_3-2_i386_glibc.rpm
rpm -i XFree86_3DFX-rushlib-3_3_3-2_i386_glibc.rpm
if the program complains of some older version or something like that
try rpm -U <filename> to update the program
also if the tar file is source code not a binary you need to compile and
install it.
good luck!

Greetings!
I just installed Red Hat 5.2 on my system running at 374MHz (Celeron
300A overclocked using 4.5 x 83MHz). I have an ATI Rage Fury AGP video
running the Rage 128GL chipset with 32 MB RAM. RH installed just fine,
but when I type 'startx' the screen blinks then returns an error that no
screens were found. I've tried just about EVERY setting in Xconfigurator
for the type of card, chipset, and whether to probe or not. Nothing
helps. Any ideas?

in bash, this depends on your readline setting. from my ~/.inputrc
set bell-style visible
set completion-ignore-case on
set show-all-if-ambiguous on
pay particular attention to that second line!

I don't know of any native linux tools to non-destructively
resize an ext2 partition, but Partition Magic v4
(DOS/Windows) can do it. If you don't have a DOS/Windows
partition on your system to run it from, there is an
included bootable OpenDOS diskette that allows you to boot

error instead. when i select generic serial it loads but the mouse moves
like its stuttering, like in windoze when u had 15 or so apps running, just
before it came up with the fameous blue screen. i move the mouse around like
normal but it either doesn't move for a while or when it does move it moves
like its stuttering, it moves then stops then moves then stops. please help
cause i really wanna get into using linux. thanx for your attention on this

Hi Mike,
I had a similar problem, when I was looking for a good backup solution. It
should be rather quick, easy to use, the data should be save, and if needed
delete should be possible (to reuse the storage medium).
I decided to buy a magneto-optical drive (MOD) !
MODs are quick because of SCSI interface (IDE is also possible), they are used
like normal 3.5"-floppies, the data is much more save than with the usual
magnetic storage (tape drives, ZIPs) and the data on the discs can be deleted
just like on usual floppies. O.k. a CDROM is more save, but a CD can be used
only once, a MO-Disc can be rewritten just like other normal mediums. The
capacity is up to 640 MB on a 3.5"-disc or also 2.4 GB on 5.25"-disc. (the last
one are a bit expensive ...)
For example, have a look at the Fujitsu homepage (should be: www.fujitsu.com)
If you do not plan to share your data with many others (who probably do not have
a MOD), it is a very good solution, in my opinion.
Hope I could help you.

Yes, mine does that - but if I forget what case the first few letters of my

I dare say that there are shells out there which would be able to figure it

go generic. or go with a linux hardware vendor.
1) build it yourself
2) have a small shop built it
get a normal case, a vanilla motherboard, choose well supported
(usually this means 6 month old) video card, external modem &c.
3) buy from eg varesearch
these type of guys will make sure everything works for you.
