Please excuse my ignorance but now I'm a bit confused.

It was my understanding that newsgroups are for asking and offering help and
for discussions. And if someone posts an article this implies that he
actually expects other people to reply, either with a suggestion how to
solve his problem or with a contribution to a discussion.

Now you are asking the world ***not*** to reply to your postings?????

Maybe you could help me to understand this contradiction, please?

They ought to work just like laptop displays, they have fixed
frequencies, and usually fixed sizes. Shouldn't be hard to make work at
all.
Though I like the one my old boss had, a 21" NEC running at 1280x1024.
VERY nice. $6000 though...

Clock both at the same speed and run the test again.

Hmmm.

PnP cards are just usual cards, but their settings must be software-set at the
setup of a system.

This is the aim of isapnp, which reads isapnp.conf and then tell the card to set
up its IRQ, DMA and so on, to values specified in the file.

Now, it needs the "hard address" to being able to talk to the card at the setup.
This is the aim of pnpdump to talk to all PnP devices in one system, asking them
their address.

Pnpdump just generates a basic file, which you can modify, and it will be
isapnp.conf ; just edit it to set up the right settings.

Now it appears to be a good thing if you want to use Windows then warm boot to
Linux, to use the same settings, because the card can have problems being set to
other settings that Windows'.

"man isapnp.conf"

manpages rule.

I'm afraid I can't be much help, but I have a Creative Labs Dxr2
DVD-ROM, and SuSE 5.3 recognized it just fine (as a CD-ROM, that is). At
first it was set as Secondary slave due to my 3 HD's, but one of them
started dying, so I took it out, and rejumpered the DVD to be master
(still on the Secondary IDE controller) and there still was no problem.
Linux regards it as the LAST HD though, not as hda. (E.g. hdd when there
were 3 HD's and hdc now).

I've got lots of friends using 2.0.34/35/36 with a K6-233 without any trouble ;
I'm using it with a K6-2/333 just perfectly.

Anyway, the K6 is Pentium-MMX harware-compatible! :)

(and so is the K6-2...)

So don't forget to select "Pentium Processor" when compiling the kernel.

While my experience is mainly with TR4 drives, I feel I can help you out
a bit here. The native Travan drives do not have hardware compression.
That will require your main CPU to provide the horsepower to do the on
the fly data compression. The newer NS drives list hardware compression
as a feature. This is a "Good Thing". I recently went to a DDS2 drive
with hardware compression, and the load on the CPU went down
dramatically during a backup/verify cycle. I have to admit that I can
now play net quake during a backup without noticable loss of speed. IT
makes that much of a difference. Spend the extra money for an NS drive.

That said, I have had great experiences with Seagate drives. The
software they ship works well too (even though I now use BRU on Linux).
I have had so-so luck with an older Colorado drive. If you can afford
it, I am quite happy with my DAT drive, and the tapes are < $10.00.
 A huge plus.

Remember, backup often, and verify EVERY time.

Don't bother with sndconfig. At least from the latest 2.1-kernels the SB64
is supported. I don't know if patches for 2.0-kernels are available.
Just choose ES1370. Give the card an interrupt in the BIOS, the rest is
automatic. My SB64 happily shares one interrupt with SCSI and works great.

Linux is known to be much more sensitive upon hardware problems than Windows.
Are you sure that Win95 never locked without apparent reason? (within a normal
use Win95 nearly lock up, I must admit it)

Does the lock and divide by zero happens exactly at the same time, exactly doing
the same thing?

Is your Linux CDROM known to be a valid one?

Is the divide by zero happening while booting the floppy disk? (can be a problem
with the floppy!)

How old is your machine?

Is the processor overclocked?

I think you were given a MaxBlast floppy with your harddrive. I didn't have to
use mine but there may be some tools on it that could help. The best thing to
do, though, would be to upgrade your BIOS (i.e. get a new motherboard). The BIOS
is having a hard time identifying your HD; you HD should be identified by the
BIOS as using a UDMA mode or something other than CylHdSec translation mode.

It's time to upgrade the motherboard.

Oh, that old problem. Run it as a module and try in conf.modules

(assuming you will be having full duplex with your 100 speed)
(also assuming you have a reasonably recent driver code)

No warranty express or implied and this might even ruin your computer!!!
