Hello everyone,
It seems my original post did not draw much attention, so here comes the
second version of my question (btw, thanks to Carlie J. Coats for providing
the single answer on this issue so far). In short, I am looking for
chipset/graphics card suggestions/comments to work with XFree86/Linux.
Current contenders are: Mach64 (ATI RagePro) Riva128 (ASUS 3DB V3000) Riva
TNT Intel i740 Any other chips you would suggest
The card has to be PCI, I do NOT play games, but I will watch TV/VCD etc.
OpenGL acceleration will be a major benefit, since I am going to be some
development there.
I wish to do the purchase ASAP, so I will greatly appreciate your
responses/pointers in any way.
Thanks in advance,
Arifi Koseoglu

Subject: Maxtor 4.3GB - Help
Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 13:59:21 -0500
I'm running RedHat 5.2 from a WD 4.3GB just fine. I added a second disk
(Maxtor 4.3GB) on the second IDE channel but I can only get 2GB
recognized.
On bootup, BIOS recognizes it as a 4GB (settings are AUTO and LBA) but
the kernel reports 2GB (4092 cyl, 16 hd, 63 sec) everytime. I run
fdisk/cfdisk and change the settings to cyl 525, hd 255, sec 63 (similar
to my boot disk) and "write" before exiting. I immediatly do a check
with fdisk -l /dev/hdc and the settings are back to 4092 cy, 16 hd, 63
sec. I've tried rebooting right after changing the settings and still
no luck.
The actual label on the disk says: 8374 cyl, 16 hd, 63 sec
Unfortunatly, WIN95's fdisk sees all 4.3GB as I can create "C, D, E".
Hate to waste half the disk...
I guest I can put it in my wife's PC as she has about maxed out her
little 2GB. :(
Thanks,
Kent

Hi,
I don't think you will be able to download the PROM from Sun or anywhere
else, but I think Sun might still sell them. But I have no idea about
the price. Just send them a mail ask for a new PROM for your system.

Please remember that hardware support generally is not distribution
dependent. Hardware support generally depends on the Linux Kernel for
everything except for video cards. For video card support depends of
XFree86. I know that you SB Live is not supported. Your Zip drive is
supported, and your cd-rom should be supported. I'm not sure about
your Rage Pro. But because the Voodoo II is a 3D only card you
probably don't need it.

Subject: Failed init of my AHA1520 SCSI card
Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 17:27:27 GMT
Hi,
I have a PCM-3420 SCSI-2 card, which is fully AHA 1520 compatable. It is a
PC/104 expansion board, and it is plugged into an ISA adapter board. This
allows me to use the card on a ordinary PC.
I've tried the board on my PC/104 system, which is running Linux Router
Project as its OS, and I have no problems using it there. But when I try it
on my Debian Linux system (stock kernel 2.0.34), I get the error message
below.
It is set to IRQ 11 with the jumpers, why am I getting a "trying software
interrupt, lost" error message? What does it even mean?
Thanks,

Hi,
I have a similar problem on my system, within Linux and ...95 everything
works fine, only when I try to access my Dos partions the trouble
starts. It started only after I updated the BIOS of my Adaptec to
1.34.3. I tried a lot to fix this, new mainboard bios, new kernel, but
nothing helped. The boot messages look alright. There are no error
messages otherwise.
My hardware is:
Adaptec 2940UW
IBM DCAS 4GB
Quantum Atlas 2GB Wide
Toshiba CDROM XM3701
Plextor 20x
Iomega ZIP

Nono, can't be. My son knew how to use the shift-button before he
turned 12. And he learned to write words with more than 4 letters long
before that.
OTOH this guy must be much older. A person as dumb as this one doesn't
learn to read/write or use a computer in less than 20
years. Interesting though that he doesn't make spelling mistakes! Also
the grammar is always correct. How come?

I'm about to buy 5 x 2300 - and you should note that the PERC RAID
is an AMI MegaRAID system, and yes there are drivers availabe (built into
Linux 2.0.36 - RedHat 5.2).
HOWEVER, there are no drivers currently available for their PERC2 Single
Channel PCI system (which is faster - you can use 80Mb/sec and much cheaper).

Can Celeron run in SMP mode?
I thought the reason why Celeron is cheaper is because you cannot have a Dual

Just as a sidenote, if you plan on printing one or more page in color every
day a color laserprinter is the way to go, starting at about US$1500 and
beating every color inkjet in quality. Also laser printers are much less
sensitive for paper quality.

Am at work, so I can't remember the full number of my

Like I said, it states on it's label that it's a Windows

being discontinued. Ahhhhhh, but I was too naive to ask,
and the blasted salesman sure wasn't going to mess up a

Anyway, anyone got any idea how I can make this thing work

Subject: Problem with Quantum Fireball EX 12.7Gb and RedHat5.2
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 13:41:26 +0100
Hi,
last night I tried to install a RedHat5.2 on a new computer.
The computer is a 256Mb, 400Mhz PII on a Tyan Tsunami motherboard.
The only HD is an EIDE Quantum Fireball EX 12.7, put on /dev/hda. There
is a cdrom (hdc) and a zip dricve (hdd), there is also an Adaptec 2940UW
SCSI card, but without any disk.
Everything works fine with the exception that disk druid gave me a
geometry of 1024*128*63 that is a little less than 8Gb. I would like to
use the whole disk (we have to store a lot of data), but I have no idea
how to do. Should I use fdisk instead of disk druid? Or there are some
special option to pass to LILO?
Thank you
Simone
