I have some trouble getting my video card working. It's a Cirrus 5424.
It runs fine at 8bpp, but I can't get any higher than that. I've read the
Xfree86 documentation, and discovered that for some reason, X can't run
that card any higher. (It's an ISA bus, and I have 24mb ram)

Is there some way to get around this? Patch? New X Server? Or new Video
Card?

They work fine with Linux. You might have to configure lilo with
the disk geometry (append="hda=nnn, nnn, nnn"). Also these are 7200
rpm drives and they get very warm; plan your cooling accordingly.

thank you for sparing me the need to tell you. but "unlearned"? really?
the criterion for being "unlearned" is not capitalizing the first word of
sentences and thereby destroying a significant property of that word? I
find it quite fascinating to see what people base their prejudices on.
somehow, this fellow thinks capitalization implies learned/unlearned.
somehow, this fellow thinks he has the right accuse people of things they

prefer the criterion fo learned/unlearned to be the ability to deal with

you're right -- I don't care what people think when they can't even be

I don't use periods after your abbreviations. I use two spaces after
  sentence-ending punctuation. I don't break a line after punctuation

this is one isolated incident, but BE WARNED anyway:

I have had the 9gig udma drive in my linux box for a few months now. a month
back, we had a power shutdown (at my apartment) for a full day. of course I
unplugged the linux box...

next day, power is back on, so I plug the wall plug back in and ... NO BOOT
;-(

the bios wouldn't even recognize the drive. and I was doing DEVELOPMENT on
that sucker!! I would have been VERY VERY pissed to loose my data so early in
the drive's life.

turns out it was a 'sticktion' (sp?) problem. ie, the spindle was stuck and
the motor didn't have enough power to start the axle spinning.

how did I solve it? you're not gonna like this: I removed the drive from the
pc cabinet (yes, I use LOTS of extra cooling on this sucker - even front bezel
fans) and brought out enough cable to be able to hold the drive in my hands.
I then powered up the system and still no disk spin. so, I lightly rotated
the drive to help 'push' it a bit. VOILA!! it started. I guess sitting off
for a full day caused something to stick inside, and it needed to be pursuaded
to start again.

as soon as it booted, I backed it up (!) and have not powered it down since.
I'm not taking that risk again.

and I'm not buying that brand/model of drive again, either.

Unless you've got a kernel with joliet patches in it, you don't. Once
you've got RH 5.2 in place you just mount it and it'll be recognized

What do you mean by this?? Are your options actually limited when you
go to the Mode selection screen of XF86Setup? Are you sure you have
v3.3.3.1-1? I have an STB Velocity 128 with 8megs also, with a Dell
monitor (different specs, though) and I have no such problem. (I run at
1280x1034x32bpp and sometimes at 1600x1200x32bpp).

You have to add a modeline under the device section of your XF86Config
file - I am not skilled at doing this, I have relied on XF86Setup to do
this for me - I don't see why you should have a problem with XF86Setup -
try this again and make sure you can't select a higher resolution and
color depth in the Mode selection screen of XF86Setup.
(Did you get the 3.3.3.1 version of XF86Setup also??)

This is one for the kernel gurus out there:

I have a new Dell Precision Workstation 610, 400MHz Xeon CPU,
1MB cache, 256MB RAM, blah blah blah. I have installed RH 5.2
on it and have found the clock to be unreliable. Overtime, I
lose several ticks and end up way off the actual time. In fact,
after leaving it set with the correct time at 23:30 last night,
when I returned this a.m. at 08:30, the time according to the
workstation was only 01:09.

I can run rdate/xntpd/etc. and set the clock, but it eventually
drifts. In fact, the drift is so severe that xntpd fails to even
work after a while.

For the record, if I boot with a Win95 boot disk and leave it
running, time is accurate.

What gives?!? I have tried compiling the kernel (2.0.36-3) with
and without Enhanced Real Time Clock support enabled, but to no
avail.

Please respond via email.

I have an NE2000 clone running under RedHat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36-0.7).

Check to see if you have the following files in the directory
/lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7/net:
  ne.o
  ne2k-pci.o
ne.o is used for ISA based NE2000 cards
ne2k-pci.o is used for PCI based NE2000 cards

I'll assume an ISA card. If you have the appropriate file, then as root
enter:
  /sbin/modprobe ne io=0x300
where you substitute the appropriate io address for your card, the
standard seems to be irq=10 and io=0x300 for NICs.

This should detect your card, If not, you should get some useful messages.
What are they?

Check the contents of the file /etc/conf/modules. Does it containd any
references to ne? If so, what are they?

Do you have a file named: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0?
If so, what does it contain? If not, you will have to build one.

Do you have a file named: /etc/sysconfig/network?
If so, what does it contain? If not, you will have to build one.

When you have tried the above (and if it is still not working) and
gathered the requested information send it to me along with the type of
card you are using ISA vs PCI.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

I had a similar problem a little while back as I have the same video card.

When X loads up it tells you how much video ram it thinks you have. Does
yours say 1024K?

Mine did until I edited the XF86Config file and indicated under my card
description that I had 8M of video ram. After that I was able to
successfully
view 1280x1024, 32 bit.

My problem now is that my 1280x1024 and 1024x768 modes are somewhat snowy,
especially the 1280x1024 which can roll sometimes even.

The ATI 3D Expression RAGE II runs fine with any version of XFree86 that
is release 3.3.1 or newer using the XF86_Mach64 server. Here is an exerpt
from my XF86Config file that you might find useful.

# **********************************************************************
# Graphics device section
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of graphics device sections may be present

Section "Device"
     Identifier "ATI 3D Expression+"
     VendorName "ATI"

# Chipset "tvga9000"

# Clocks 25 28 45 36 57 65 50 40 25 28 0 45 72 77 80 75

As you can see you should NOT specify anything for Chipset, VideoRam and
Clocks as the XF86_Mach64 server will determine this.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Fred,
This error message is in 8390.c which is targeted for
8390 based boards. Are you using the 8029 ne.c driver? How
old is the 8390 board? Is it an older design board - they had a
number
of problems? If that's the case the dual maybe too fast (lock
timing)
but I'm not sure about that. The code is showing that it got an
interrupt while interrupts were shut off. It looks like this is
leftover code from development testing and should never be
traversed
after an initial development design check was complete. But the
code
is there.
It looks like this is happening when the card is getting
probed.
Does this only happen on startup or can do you run for a while
then
trigger into this condition? The code looks like this should
happen
on startup when networking comes up. Are the interrupts set
correctly?

PC Power & Cooling www.pcpowercooling.com (760) 931-5700 makes a very
heavy duty 10 bay (external) 3-fan tower which comes in beige OR
gunmetal blue with a chrome bezel. They are not cheap, but it is the
last case you will ever have to buy. They also sell real heavy power
supplies. I have this case and the only problem is the need for long
IDE cables.
