Subject: Re: LINUX machine instead of iMac
Hi Don, here's a list of vendors who sell LINUX preinstalled systems...
http://www.linux.org/help/beginner/preinstalled.html
but i along with probably countless others here will ask you to at least
consider that it's a really valuable experience to set up your own system.
It can be a headache, and I suppose if you're really a complete computer
tech novice it's not advisable, but maybe you've got a friend nearby who'd
help you through it.
I think sometimes people use LINUX just because it's a thrill to really
learn something.
Of course buying a preinstalled system, you'd still have plenty of
opportunity to learn by reconfiguring, setting up software, and general
tweaking and poking around, so good luck to you...
michael
hey btw what are you doing with an ai.mit.edu address if you're a novice?

Subject: Problems - ATI Xpert@Play and XFree86 3.3.3.1-1.1
Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 02:05:16 -0400
Recently upgraded to ATI Xpert@Play AGP video card and XFree86 3.3.3.1-1.1.
Using XF86Setup to generate XF86Config runs OK till it comes time to test
the configuration. Then it gives me nothing but hash and a blurred display,
regardless of the resolution/color depth. I've checked and re-checked, read
the README's, Release Notes, FAQ's. I'm not doing anything fancy - generic
101 keyboard, Logitech Marble FX trackball using PS/2 driver, any
resolution/color depth gratefully accepted. The Mach64 server is supposed to
work with this video card!!!
The only time anything affects the hash is if I set the options
"no_program_clocks", "no_bios_clocks", and "override_bios", then provide a
Modeline for standard 640x480 and a Clocks line. I get a stable and crisp
display now. However, what appears is 1/3 of the normal display repeated 3
times. Three vertical strips all containing the identical portion of the
display. But it's rock steady and as clear as a bell. If anyone out there
has one running, please help. Send XF86Config files, guesses, documents to
read, names. I really want to get this one running. BTW, this card works
beautifully under NT 4.0.
Thanks in advance,
TJ

How did you managed to get ride of the video board. The BIOS setup
doesn't allow me to do it. How can you run an old 486 mother board
without a video board. I'll like to know that. Thanks in advance.

I have this Zeos Pantera Pentium 133 Mhz computer that someone gave to me. It did
not have a fan on the cpu just a big heat sink. What I mean by big is, the part of
the heat sink that comes into contact with the cpu is thin, the fins are about 2
inches long. I ran this computer for about 1 year like this with no problems at
all, of course the case has a fan in the front of it that blows in towards the
cpu. I took the old mother board out of this computer and put another one in so I
could upgrade to 233 Mhz. The 233 Mhz has a fan already so I guess I got a little
extra circulation in my box. I like the sound of my computer too. Does anyone know
where I can get any info about this motherboard that came with this Zeos computer?
I remember seeing somewhere where there is a web site that has info on all types
of motherboards.

I have successfully been using Redhat 5.2 on an older Pentium box. I
attempted to upgrade to Redhat 6.0 today. Following the install I
attempted to mount a CD from my drive.
mount -t iso9660 -r /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
I get a complaint message back that states the kernel does not provice
iso9660 support. This is really lame as this works fine in 5.2. Going
back to 5.2 until Redhat gets this fixed.

hello ,
I get two serial pci cards, but I can't configure it for new device.
The Kernel found the card: With "cat /proc/pci" the result was
Bus 0, device 15, function 0:
Network controller: PLX PLX9050 PCI <-> IOBus Bridge (rev 1).
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 11.

I/O at 0x6400.
I/O at 0x6500.
I/O at 0x6600.
So how can I use setserial to get a new ttyS* - dev. Or must I setup new
device and run setserial afterwards?
Thanks a lot for your help

Won't work. No winmodem currently works under Linux. You'd have better

Subject: Wrong disk size under LINUX!!!!!
I'm trying to install SuSE Linux (Vers. 6.0) on my computer. LINUX
recognizes my hard disk (Fujitsu MP3052AT), but only with 2014 MB
instead of 5025 MB. That's why I can't create new partitions during the
installation process. I tried the disk in another computer, but with the
same result (So I think the EIDE-controller is not the problem. My
mainboard is ASUS P55/T2P4). I also tried the different EIDE-Kernels of
the SuSe system, but it was all the same. I don't want to delete my
windows partitions on this drive.
My drives are all a little strange.
primary Master HP SureStore 8100 (CD-Writer)
primary Slave LiteOn 384 (CD-ROM)
Secondary Master Fujitsu MP3052AT (HDD)
Secondary Slave Seagate HDD
That's the sole configuration that runs under win95. When I change it
the CD-Drives are not recognized.
When I start the LINUX rescue-system from the CD and then "fdisk
/dev/hdc", the result is "unable to read /dev/hdc".
My partitions are:
1 GB primary for win95
4 GB ext
1 GB FAT
1 GB FAT
1,5 GB free (for LINUX)
0,5 GB FAT
Can anybody help me?

Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 07:40:51 GMT
I installed Redhat 6.0 today. I like the install menus in 5.2 much
better. My 3Com Etherlink 10Mb 3C900B-TPO card works fine under 5.2.
However, following the install of 6.0 I can't get the system to
recognize the card is in the machine. Ifconfig certainly does not see
it. I USED THE IDENTICAL NETWORK SETTINGS as with 5.2 yet it does not
work. I finally reinstalled 5.2 and voila! The card works fine on the
network. I believe the card support under 6.0 is screwed up in some
way. Certainly not worth my time to find out.

I wouldnt switch on debug in the isapnp.conf file. Also, i asumme u type
full path to isapnp.conf as the argument to isapnp? (or u r typing it in
the /etc dir)...then u should see a line like board 1 regongnized
as........
then after that u have to use setserial to set the com port info, u might
get lucky by just running the rc.serial script manually after running
isapnp assumming yer isapnp.conf file is setup right

Try this, go to /usr/X11R6/bin do a "vi startx" right up toward the top of the
file you see a command that starts something like "bin sh". Right before this
first command type "gpm -k" and save the file. I have a LogiTech 3 button mouse
and I was having all kinds of problems getting it to work with all 3 buttons. I
did the above fix and I haven't had a problem since, all three buttons work in X
and all. I do get an error message when X first starts saying something like "gpm
-k command not found" but it still works. If you want to get technical you could
write the command the proper way (I'm a little lazy) just copy the first command
you see in the startx file and substitute the path name for gmp and put "gpm -k"
in there.
Hope this helps,

Try, running fdisk /mbr to erase the boot partition, if it won't allow you
to delete the logical partitions, try creating 1 logical partition, this
helped me remove the partition when i had a similar problem. I tried to
install solaris on my second physical drive but it doesn't allow it, i don't
know why. But remember the ide drive will boot first before the scsi.

Someone suggested that maybe there is a collision between my card and other
devices, well I looked at /proc/interrupts and /proc/pci, here is the

he's right: it's too slow. the disk should be delivering more like 8-12MB/s.

you certainly don't want pio.

why are you running a kernel that's basically 3 years old?

get 2.2.9, and configure it to support your controller (VIA82C586).

it's not the fastest drive, but you should be seeing >10 MB/s
on outer tracks.

Hi bill, you may usefull links on http://linuxembedded.com.
about bios you may find answers at
http://www.waste.org/~zanshin where is the best mailing list about linux
& embedded stuff.
Keep me in touch about your project.
