Hi i am a linux newbee and have got ppp , sound , and all the other

working ok (after about 4 weeks!)but can't get my printer working.
It is a Lexmark 2050 - is this a windows only printer or is there a
driver out there somewhere ?

Thanks for everyone who responded. I finally got the problem fixed. I had
to search the docs as when using the 3c59x detected a ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
hardware address. Causes for this are:
1. Warm-booting from Win95 OSR1 or Win98 (that's me!)
2. "PnP OS" is set in the PCI BIOS Setup (that's me!)
3. Broken PCE BIOS
2/3 aint bad
Having changed those (powered of at mains (ATX case)) and disabled the PnP
OS the detection worked.
Thanks again,
Tony

It's trivial (well, almost) to remap the keyboard in Linux, but someone
in this thread was wondering whether it was possible in other operating
systems. Hence the mention of the said MS toy.

The ProLinea series should work, but you'll perhaps need to play some
tricks to get around the proprietary Compaq BIOS settings. Be aware
that getting additional add-on cards to work in a Compaq can be a really
tough project.

I have worked for a company that sells ham radio equipment via mail
order for 3 years and I have heard many stories from my customers-which
has made me very leery of these little "fly by night" companies. I
couple of good ones I have found are MicroPro (www.mpipc.com) and
CompSource (www.c-source.com). Neither of them are always the low ball
on price-but I have always gotten exceptional customer service out of
both of them. When there has been a problem with an item I have had to
pay return shipping to them (one of the dangers of mail order) but I have
not had to pay shipping on the replacement item. Plus, CompSource offers
free shipping on orders over $200 if you place the order via the
internet.
Just thought I would give some credit where it was due- nice to hear
about the scumbuckets and the good ones.

Yes Linux provides dual cpu support, but you need to rebuild the kernel. For
2.0.xx kernels, you need to uncomment the '#SMP = 1' line in the kernel
Makefile. For 2.2.0 pre-release kernels, it is now a config option. On 2.0.xx
systems, the kernel uses a single lock (ie, only one processor can be doing
kernel code at a time). Also, the CPU time accounting is messed up (time on
the second processor isn't properly accounted for). For 2.2.0, the locks are
more fine grained, and you can get utilities that show how much time is spent
on each cpu.

Well, are these folks alive or not ? A few weeks ago, I reported a
bunch of PCI devices which weren't supported by the latest kernel at the
time, and I still haven't gotten any response from them. Not even an
automated response ( as Xfree86 sends to acknowledge the receipt of your
message. )
I would just like to know if they received my message or not. Some of
the devices I reported still aren't supported in the pre9 kernel, and I
would like to know if the lack of support is because they're unaware of
these devices or because they're just really busy and haven't had time to
add the support.
BTW, my system is working fine, but I'm somewhat concerned about the
"unknown PCI device" warning messages I've been getting.

Hi. I had a fully functional SUSE 5.2 (double boot with win) system and was
using the standard lp print spooling stuff fine with my LaserJet. Then I
bought a new harddrive, copied windows to the new drive, changed the jumpers
so that the new drive was the master (and set the old one as the slave) and
changed lilo, fstab and other stuff accordingly. I also added and removed
some packages.
Then I tried to print something (using enscript) and nothing happened.
"lpq" had a message stating something to the effect that the printer was
offline.
I thought that perhaps the print spooler was working incorrectly, put the
command "cat file >/dev/lp1" returned an error.
"dmesg" had the following message:
"lp:driver configured but no interfaces found"
Does someone know what is wrong and how I can fix it?
Thanks

Hm? What did you do to get a Control-Lock key?
Under X11 the trick is to assign the Control keysym to the keycode of
the Caps-Lock key, rather than adding Caps-Lock to the keysym list of
the ctrl modifier.
For the Linux console, the emacs2.map seems to work well.

I've downloaded all the specks on my Video card and Monitor and they all

I was able to play WAV ("My name is Linus Thorvalds, and I pronounce ...") on
my 4000CDT. Requires some adjustments, though. I got hints from different
pages about other Toshiba notebooks I accessed via the Linux
Hardware-Compatibility-HOWTO. I have RedHat 5.2; I do not have the non-free
OSS. Neither sndconfig nor the OPL3SA2 "driver" worked for me. But I got
sound with Soundblaster-16 and Microsoft Sound System drivers.
(If anyone knows a more elegant or better way, please tell me!)
First Step: With te DOS TSETUP utility, change sound card interrupt to 7.
(Necessary because the ad1848 module will not load with preconfigured IRQ 5).
Make sure the sound modules ad1848.o (or sb.o) are available.
(In RedHat 5.2, sound drivers are configured as modules. If you have another
distribution, the settings below should also work with normal drivers).
Add lines to /etc/conf.modules:
options ad1848 io=0x530 irq=7 dma=1 dma2=0
options sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma=0 dma16=1 mpu_io=0x330
I have heard that the sb module gives only 8 bit sound for the Yamaha sound
chip, therefore I have mainly used ad1848. When loaded with modprobe, it says
"IRQ conflict?", although I couldn't find any (maybe someone can help??),
but it loads and plays sound.
I didn't get autoloading of sound modules right so far, but that's because
I didn't really try.
I have no experience with MIDI on Linux (no experience whatsoever with MIDI,
actually).
Good luck,
Martin

Nah, just be carefull about which packages are going to be installed.
In the last year I have implemented a number of intranet/mail server

i'm a newbie, too, and had the same problem with my modem. turns out
it's a "winmodem" and will only work with windows. (apparently it
takes advantage of the windows software to get rid of some chips on
board, thus saving hardware costs). i had to buy a new modem that
will work with any o/s and then everything was fine.
in short, my guess is that you have a winmodem and you'll need to buy
a new one. i found a good deal at egghead.com and compusa on a
cardinal modem. seems 33.6 is ot so popular anymore. : )
good luck!

until you push the button and it prints kind of a small diamond and then
it stops...
I'm using redhat linux 5.1 and the postscript.cfg looks like this...

GSDEVICE=cdj550
RESOLUTION=300x300
COLOR=
PAPERSIZE=letter
EXTRA_GS_OPTIONS=""
REVERSE_ORDER=
PS_SEND_EOF=YES
NUP=1
RTLFTMAR=18

By the way... the printer utility that comes with redhat (printtool)
writes an empty postscript.cfg so I had to modify the Generic Postscript

The Multia is an old design. You get the performance
of about a P90/P100. It will depend on what you are
doing with it. Just remember that it's not upgradeable
and the box is VERY small. If you need large disk
space you'll need to go external.
You can find out more about them from:

Good Luck, they are a lot of fun to play with.

>From my experience, the primary difference between SCSI and IDE drives
is in the pasticular environment you're running in. IDE is fine for
single user, single tasking environment. If you have a lot of processes
& users doing disk I/O at the sametime, SCSI is better. Reliability is
about the same, typically the main difference between a SCSI & IDE drive
having the same specs & same manufacturer is the interface electronics,
which is typically not the part most prone to failure...
As you've noted, a SCSI drive costs more than an equivalent IDE drive...

Subject: Req. info on Qume Terminals
Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 21:02:17 -0500
Hi!
I bought a Qume Text Terminal, model number QVT323EV. I am looking for
informations on key bindings (e.g. how to get to the setup screen, if
there is one). Also, is it normal for a terminal to act strangely (i.e.
do a self test for an hour) when it is NOT wired to another computer? I
didn't buy / make a cable yet, so...
Thanking you in advance,
Martin Ledoux
