its all about choosing the right motherboard and ram. good quality ram is
important to ANY config, but the right mobo is especially significant for the
k6 series.
go to amd's website and see their recommended mobo list.
I have used FIC boards with very good success.

I get that sometimes when the disk has spun down since the last access.
Jaz drives stop if you don't select them now and then. Some layer of
the SCSI stack doesn't know how long they take to come up to speed again.
Try mounting it again ten seconds later and it will work.

I don't have any MS-DOS file systems on Jaz carts. Linux fdisk
and ext2 work great on Jaz carts. Why settle for less?

Yep, I wasn't able to get my AHA1542CF detected until I set it to either
330 or 334. Since 330 was a conflict with my Sound Card I left it at 334
and it's been working great ever since. All I have on it at the moment
are my SCSI Zip and old DDS1 Tape Drive, both work great !
Hope this helps,

I wonder if it's a winmodem, but no where on the box, nor zoomtel.com can I
find such a reference.

Nice try. Standard English rules that are taught in schools teach one to
capitalize the first word of a sentence. You don't do that. *Assuming that
someone knows nothing else about you*, the immediate conclusion is that you
didn't learn that particular lession. That makes you "unlearned". Please
note that "unlearned" does not equate to "stupid."
Is that too simple for you to understand?

Not bad. An attack against the person in less than one paragraph.
No, it is sufficient for me to notice that your opinions on non-emacs
issues aren't worth noting. I view your lack of capitalization an
indication of lack of atttention to detail. You appear to take some
effort to get the grammar correct (no small task), but you don't take the
effort to get the capitalization correct.
Assuming that you expect your posts to be read.

My, you have a thing about skin color don't you? Would you care to guess
mine? Upon what basis do you make that guess?
All that I know about you is from your posts. You *choose* to violate
standard English capitalization standards. The average English speaking
lurker is going to assume (prior to reading anything in detail) that you do
not *know* how to capitalize correctly.
Hey, if that's what you want to portray, fine. It seems rather sloppy on
your part.
Erik> I don't use periods after your abbreviations.
That's non-standard.

Cool. Perhaps you've had some type of typing class. Or is that the norm
for Norwegian typing?

as far as configuring isapnp, TurboLinux has turbopnpcfg, a nice util for
automatically or custom configuring your isa pnp devices and initializing
them.. it also has turbosoundcfg which helps configure sound..

Subject: Re: AHA-3940UW = no Linux???
Opps, format of first message was bad - here's a second try.
My CD works fine with Win98 and if I put the RH 5.2 CD in
the drive it will auto boot but when it looks for the CD drive
it comes back with the message "mount failed: Block device required"
The same thing happens when I use the RH 5.2 boot diskette.
When looking for a SCSI controller it finds a 2940.
I have a 3940UW which the hardware HOWTO says is
supported since 1.3.6
Here are my SCSI devices.
Channel A ID #0 ST34520w Internal
ID #9 ST34520w Internal
ID #10 ST34572w Internal end device ACTIVE termination
ID #12 ST39173w Internal
Channel B ID #4 ST34371n Internal end device ACTIVE termination
ID #6 Plextor 8x CD External end device ACTIVE termination
For channel A the controller card is the end device and is
manually terminated, not 'automatic'.
For channel B the controller card termination is set to 'disable'.
I have tried the default controller termination (automatic) also,
and still have the problem.
M/B is an ASUS TX-97-XE with the most recent BIOS.
Does this error message mean I will not be able to run Linux?
Any suggestions or wild guesses welcomed.

I doubt you *have* a com 5. Winderz will sometimes create a phantom
com port and claim a modem's on it. Sometimes it works, often not.
Also, unless you have a very fast machine, irq 12 is much too high,
although it sometimes works OK on a laptop. First, find out what port
your modem's really on. From a DOS prompt, type:
ECHO ATDT111 > COM1
and see if your modem beeps. If not, repeat for 2, 3 and 4. For some
weird reason, this doesn't work on 33.6 modems, but will on 56K. If
you get a write fault, just Abort and go on to the next port. Once
you know where the modem really lives, you can use that port in Linux.

a) Have you tried 32-bit colour? 24-bit colour never works like it
should in XFree86, I use 1024x768 with 32-bit colour on my machine.
b) Don't let the XF86_SVGA name fool you. That's the only server with
drivers for the Viper 330, and yes, they're accelerated. The video will
be slower than NT, but that's because NT has a higher priority for video
than anything else. Explains why the OpenGL screensaver takes over 90%
CPU time. Go figure.

LINUX doesn't boot from the root partition, it boots from the /boot
partition. You should have /dev/hda2 set to mount to /boot. Well, I'm not
a connoisseur of all LINUX distributions, but that seems to hold true from
what I've seen.... Also, a time or two, I've seen problems with having
multiple partitions set as active, which seems to be the case if that is a
true FDISK screenshot. If you're going to use LILO, then you only need one
partition active. With the way I have LILO configured, it is /dev/hda2.
