Hi Dan.
If, like me, you are new to Linux, (IMHO) forget about using Plug and
Pray, get the bios to set up the modem or hard configure it with
jumpers.

Then when the modem works in windows, make a note of the IRQ, and IO
address. and whether it is Comm 1, 2, 3 or 4

start Linux and use set serial on the comm port (ttyS0 is comm 1,
ttyS1 is 2 etc.)to tell the kernel about what IRQ and IO the modems
serial port is set to (You may have to set an appropriate Baud rate. I
don't know whether this is done by the apps which use the modem or
not.)

in the dev directory, you should make sure that the modem symlink
points to the correct port, i.e. ttyS0, ttyS1 etc.

when you start minicom, it should manage to initialize your modem and
then when you type AT and press enter, the modem should immediately
reply with OK

having got the above working, I would get on the World Wide Wait
(using windows) and get hold of a file called xisp (a search on yahoo
or altavista will find it). this I found to be a very handy utility,
which does my internet dial up connection and is configured very
easily.

That lot is what got my modem and internet connection sorted

hope it is of some help.

Kevin

Well, I did the same as you, and didn't enjoy Gnome's speed on my P200.
So, I used KDE whenever I started, and it seemed a little cooler; ran
faster, etc. Well, I eventually totally screwed my system (as every good
newbie should), and just decided to say to hell w/it, and re-format and
re-install. This time, a little more knowledgeable about it, didn't even
INSTALL Gnome/E/whatever. Just KDE.

I've also heard Blackbox is very small, quick, though obviously a few less
frills. (A buddy of mine uses that on his slackware system). Anyhow.
Hope that helps.

My laptop (an Ultra 989) has the Rage Pro LT and
the earlier Mach64 servers don't work with it. I
did manage to get it going with the XFree3.3.5
version though. I got mine from www.suse.de, but
it should be widely available from various mirror
sites. Don't despair - it can be made to work,
just get the latest Mach64 server you can find.
Mine's going fine now in the maximum 1024x768
that my LCD panel allows.
BTW, I couldn't get XF86Setup to work with the
Rage PRO - it wouldn't generate a usable config
file. Xconfigurator worked fine.

I had the same problem, it does'nt support the S3 Trio3d, only works in
stupid basic vga mode with 16 colors. What you need to do is update the
verison of xfree86 (the part that shows the graphics on screen) Goto
www.xfree86.org and you'll get all the info that you need.

My company has purchased a Dell Dimension V400 computer which has a Yamaha YMF724
based sound

card. Currently linux does not support this chip set (except for partial support in
the O$$ drivers).

I have tried running sndconfig to setup my sound card and

it id's the chipset as being a YMF724 (this is good)

The Yamaha YMF-724 is not supported (this is bad)

I understand that Yamaha is not being helpful with the DS-XG stuff for proprietary
reasons.

Reading on the specs on the card, it indicates it has legacy Soundblaster Pro support.

I was hoping to use sndconfig, but I can't get it to not autoprobe, even with the
--noautoconifg or --noprobe switches.

Does anyone know how to swing this?

I am trying to work on the Soundblaster Pro angle but not sure if it's gonna work.

Do I need to somehow identify the irq, dma, etc settings and include this in the
isapnp.conf?

Can I somehow use the pcitools to work with the card?

How can I get my YMF724 PCI based sound card with legacy SoundBlaster Pro support
working on linux?

I have a Linksys Hub (5 dual-speed 10Base-T/100BaseTX Autosensing ports)
and a Linksys LNE100TX PCI NIC card.

The second diskette with the NIC has a linux directory with a copy of
tulip.c on it.

I am using Mandrake 6.0. I followed the instructions at
http://www.linksys.com/support/solution/nos/linux_lne100tx.htm#module for
recompile
module method. The only difference I noted was that the include
directory -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet
did not exist in my source distribution. I guessed at using ipv4 instead of
inet and all went fine
except the compile generated two warnings about ambiguous else statements.

Other than that all worked well. I have tested it communicating with a Win
98 box with a D-Link
DFE530 card and Win 98 and Linux running with a 3c574 card. At this point
all seems fine.

Subject: REQ: The fastest Window Manager for a slow Laptop?
Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 17:12:04 -0700

Hi folks,

I wonder which window manager might be the fastest on a Compaq Laptop
(Presario 1215, 24MB RAM, 180 MHz). I have installed RedHat 6.0 (Kernel
2.2.5-15smp) and it automatically installed the window manager
"enlightenment" and "gnome" (although I don't understand what tasks each of
those exactly fulfill). Anyway: I turns out that this system is VERY slow.
Even slower than Windows 95. But that - of course - wasn't the reason to
switch over to linux. When I try to change the window manager in the "GNOME
Control Center" it doesn't seem to remember that when I "startx" the next
time. But it doesn't offer me the option to save that new configuration.

Now: Probably that also depends on the distribution I have.
What is the recommendation for the slimmest/fastest linux
version/distribution/window manager that should be used?
Which window manager does NOT use a thousand bitmaps to display its window
corners and radio buttons and so on?

In my experience the trend goes to still fancier desktops with a thousand
different gimmicks and gizmos constantly sucking memory and cpu time and
that sucks (literally :-). I just want to know how to SWITCH them off. I
hope that this doesn't impair the good reputation of linux being an
efficient system.

Thanks in advance - Dave.

don't panic. you are ok.

v1.4 is just tighter constrainst on your hardware. if linux assumes
v1.1 conformance, it is being conservative and there is no problem.

to summarize the effect of the specifications

v1.1 looser on hardware -- tighter on linux kernel
v1.4 tighter on hardware -- looser on linux kernel

no. figure out free irq and ioport range. jumper the modem to use
these values. avoid pnp if at all possible.

without pnp you don't need to fool with pnpdump.

nod. pnp doesn't work very well as you have experienced. jumper to
avoid irq conflicts and avoid confusing linux pnp configuration.

I worked for Xerox (Engineering Systems - offshoot that was originally

The chance of getting _anything_ out of Xerox about this printer is

Hi Mike,

I have caldera 2.2 and an epson 400 printer and I just got it to work. The
model is different but hope it will help.

you must be logged in as root to do the configuration. First make sure
ghostscript 5.10 is installed. Then run lisa --printer to configure your
printer. Follow the steps, it will create two files /etc/printcap and
/var/spool/lpd/ps/filter. You don't have to modify /etc/printcap if your
printer configured correctly.

Navigate to caldera system support page. Search the support knowledge base
and find "setting up epson stylus color printers on openlinux". It contains
all the information you need. Remember you have to modify
/var/spool/lpd/ps/filter to be exactly the same with the document shows or
your printer won't respond. You can find checkpc command under /usr/sbin/.

Good luck.
