I can indeed tell you, the short answer is that the original Pentium
cannot correctly predict a loop consisting of a _taken_ branch on every
cycle.

I first verified this (for loops with up to 7 branch instructions, with
or without regular integer instructions paired with the branches) a few
years ago.

Agner Fog however did much more, he actually reverse engineered the
exact mechanism by which BTB update/replacement happens. He wrote a very
good article about this which you'll find on his home page.

Ive had the same problem with my Millenium G200.
The reason was very simple, I used 24 Bit color instead of 32 Bit !!

Hi all,
Has anyone successfully configured the Kensingtion Turbo Mouse to use all
__4__ buttons? I really miss this functionality from Mac/Win world. I can
only get it to reconize 3 events - Left, right, and cord click. I would be
extremely interested and grateful for anyone that may have some knowledge
on where to go for info. I checked all the mini howtos and such but they
only cover 3-button mice. I left an email at Kensington site about a
possible driver for Linux. Any news would be better than no news. Thanks.

Thanks to Micheal, coats and Georg!!

The answer if any are interested is it that the current XFree86
distribution does not support the TNT Nvidia chipset. However 3.3.3 does.
Here is a response I recieved that sums it up well. I can't wait to test
it out. Thanks.

<snip>
Well RedHat 5.2 is not shipped with suitable drivers but you can download
the update packages for XFree86-3.3.3 which includes full support for the
Diamond Viper and I myself used it successfully. Remember to update all of
the XFree86 rpm-packages installed.

Subject: AHA-3940UW = no Linux???

My CD works fine with Win98 and if I put the RH 5.2 CD in
the drive it will auto boot but when it looks for the CD drive
it comes back with the message "mount failed: Block device
required" The same thing happens when I use the
RH 5.2 boot diskette.

When looking for a SCSI controller it finds a 2940.
I have a 3940UW which the hardware HOWTO
says is supported since 1.3.6

Here are my SCSI devices.

    Channel A ID #0 ST34520w Internal
                     ID #9 ST34520w Internal
ID #10 ST34572w Internal end device ACTIVE
termination
                     ID #12 ST39173w Internal
Channel B ID #4 ST34371n Internal end device ACTIVE
termination
ID #6 Plextor 8x CD External end device ACTIVE
termination

For channel A the controller card is the end device and is
manually terminated, not 'automatic'.
For channel B the controller card termination is set to 'disable'.
I have tried the default controller termination (automatic) also,
and still have the problem.

M/B is an ASUS TX-97-XE with the most recent BIOS.

Does this error message mean I will not be able to run Linux?
Any suggestions or wild guesses welcomed.

Successfully installed Linux 5.2 today on e-machine 300c (Cyrix)
purchased yesterady. Left the installed copy of Windows 98 in place,
nondestructively shrinking the original partition, which occupied the
whole disk originally, to make room for a new partition for Linux.

To do so, followed the instructions by Dan Kegel posted to
comp.os.linux.setup 1/2/99. You can find those by going to
www.dejanews.com and searching for the text 'steps to install $499'

Our Linux user group had an installfest this morning and Dan was
there. So was another guy with an emachine on which he had Linux
running.

Did not get X going yet, but found recipes for that from others on
dejanews and plan to try.

If oyur going to run X and lets face it most of us "non technical

Hi Folks,

I haven't seen much on this, so here goes..

I've got a digital edge free wire infrared keyboard with a built
in `joystick' that seems to operate much like those found on
laptop keyboards. It's a pressure sensitive `button'. I also have
various extra non-standard keys, marked up WWW, plus CD
controls'etc.

I want to map these extra buttons, and also have the mouse
respond to the joystick movement. Does anyone know how to do
this?...

FWIW it was purchased from PC World in the UK

 -Thanks, Max.

When I installed Linux (RedHat) I was using a cable modem line that
connected to an ethernet card in one of my PCI slots. My provider uses
dhcp to issue IP addresses, so I had eth0 use dhcp on startup. Also,
at this time, I was using kernel 2.0.34. In addition, I was using LILO
to load both Linux and Windows. My hard drive crashed. I bought a new
one and tried to reinstall Linux on the new drive. This time, however,
I used a boot disk, which I assume uses the same kernel that is
compiled during installation. Now, when I load up Linux, using the
boot disk, it says that it is delaying dhcp for my eth0 device, which
has not been changed, and was configured to run at startup. If you
have any suggestions, please let me know.

say, I just so happen to be a right-wing Southern (US) male and, as a
bonus, quite religious (fundamentalist Christian) like many here in
the state of Texas. in spite of this, I think Erik has made a very
worthwhile point regarding econony of keystrokes to convey information.
there's little doubt that we'd strongly disagree on political and
spiritual matters, I'm also certain he wouldn't care for my choice
of music either (southern gospel, western swing and C&W). nevertheless,
he's persuaded me that this particular style is not without merit.

by the way, I also don't care much for syntax highlighting of source
code. perhaps this prediposes me for not needing the visual cue of
a capital to begin a sentence?

I got this with a wintv primio. The tuner chip isn't suported
in the kernel version of bttv AFAIK. This is what I did and mine now
works.
Recompile the kernel without any of the video4linux stuff
Get the bbtv0.6.x stuff (find from Freshmeat) which is the
latest version of bttv.
Build it (and stick the modules in /lib/modules/[whatever].)
Insert the modules and start xawtv etc.
All I need to get it to do now is to give me sound under 2.2.0pre9 ;)

You misunderstand. ttyS0 is the same as cua0, and ttyS1 is the same
as cua1. (The cua* are not recommended.) But ttyS0 would be called,
in DOS language, COM1. Similarly, ttyS1 would be COM2.

So, if, in Windows, your tablet is on COM1, then under Linux, it's on
ttyS0.

The automatic install of Red-Hat Linux knows how to recognize a 3c562 netowork

Is there a fast cure to it ?
If somebody could point me to the source, and maybe what should be done,

I use an Acer Travelmate 312T dual booting Linux and Win98 (you get a free
choice of Win95 or Win98 as they ship restore disks for both). I chose it in
preference to the more well known "sexy" ultrathins as it was the smallest
machine (volume-wise) that I could find with an 800x600 display. It also
has more ports built in than most ultrathins, comes with CD-ROM and
(Win)modem as standard, and is significantly cheaper. Its possible downsides
are a keyboard that some might find too small (though I can touchtype on it
OK) and a 2 hour battery life.

Installing Linux is a bit of a pig because you need a minor change to the
IDE driver to get the CD-ROM working, and you need the CD to install to be
able to edit the driver... It is possible though. Having got past that
hurdle, I've had no problems with Linux on the machine at all.

Cheers,

Matthew

Hello,

did anybody get the Soundcard "miro PCM12 Rev. E"
working ? The soundcard contains the opti-chip 82C924.

The loading of the modules

         insmod soundcore
         insmod soundlow
         insmod sound
         insmod ad1848
         insmod uart401
         insmod sb mad16=1

works fine. Only the last module

insmod mad16 io=0x530 irq=9 dma=1 dma16=0 mpu_irq=10 mpu_io=0x330

does NOT work with the stupid error-message:
/lib/modules/2.2.0-final/misc/mad16.o: module_init: Device or
resource busy.

The kernel (/var/log/messages) gives no error-messages. There
is also no irq/dma-problem, because I checked the /proc/dma
and /proc/interrupts. Also (in the meantime), I tried all irq's
and dma's.

I'm afraid that the reason for the problem is, that the
opti 82C924 is a pnp-chip. (Opti sayes this.) But the soundcard
miro PCM12 Rev.E is NOT pnp. Also pnpdump gives nothing.
Perhaps the miro must be initialized which is not possible
under linux. (I have NO windows to check this.)

Thanks for all hints.
Karsten.

The mad16-module can also not be loaded with kernel 2.0.36.

parts made here but assembled in India. I know some of their former
local suppliers so if you can send me a little bit more info, I'll do
what I can. I must tell you however, that most of their suppliers were
pretty low-end and some have gone belly up.

I'm using 6x86 166+ w 64MB FPM/EDO and S3V graphics card at home, and it
works
fine. (I use RedHat 5.2 now.) The Cyrix 6x86 P166+ had some heat/cache
problems
prior to revision 2.7 (which I use) - if You have some older revision, You
might try
"cooling down" the processor by setting it's "suspend on halt" register.
I've seen a linux
program doing that, but all I remember is it's name: 6x86set.

I got the alsa source in Debian potato, and it wanted a kernel 2.1.128
or
later, and there isn't source for that in Debian. I went to
sunsite/megalab
and got 2.1.132 and 2.2.0-final source. alsa has about four *.o in its
own
tree, and links them version-specific, so I had to pick one kernel or
the
other. I picked 2.2.0-final, and alsa ./configure bombs out on the
"-final"
non-numeric. I edited kernel-source-2.2.0-final/Makefile, the line near
the top somethingEXTRA="-final". Fine, now uname -r says 2.2.0, and
alsa's configure script works.

kernel:

make mrproper
make menuconfig
make dep

cd /usr/src/modules/alsadriver
./configure
make clean install

cd /usr/src/linux (kernel-source-yours)

make etc.

pnpdump>/etc/isapnp.conf
....uncomment there as appropriate

/usr/src/modules/alsadriver/alsaconf/alsaconf
...wrote /etc/modutils/alsa
update-modules
...get that into /etc/conf.modules
...hand edit /etc/modules to put the module names from
/etc/modutils/alsa in

Now mine loads with no errors, soundblaster awe32.

amixer -c 1 out-gain 100 unmute norec

aplay demo.au

...no sound.
