This is BS, the i740 is a kickass card under linux. Get the
XBF-i740-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm or XBF-i740-libc5-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm and
xf86config-glibc-1.0.0.i386.tar or xf86config-libc5-1.0.0.i386.tgz and the
README file .Read the README file,Install the server, make your symbolic link
as the README states, unzip the xf86config file, run it as root and pick your
card fron the list. IF for some reason you still have problems please email me.

Linux will detect the zip drive as an extra hard drive. On my system, it
detects it as hdd4. Then mount it:
mount /dev/hdd4 /mnt
Then cd to /mnt and you got it,

I don't use it yet, but I read that 2.2.1 now has microchannel support.

You can either use a hub with a 10BaseT system (UTP cable) or direct
connect to a 10Base2 system (RG58 coax).

This approach could easily become a routing/interface nightmare for a
small home system.

Date: 31 Jan 1999 04:18:25 GMT

I am planning to put together a web server that will run
Linux/Apache, and I would appreciate comments on the following:

Dual Pentium Pro 180
Intel Providence PR440FX mainboard
128 MB memory
7200 rpm narrow SCSI hard drive (all I have lying around)

Are there any known problems with the above hardware and Linux
and/or Apache? I did some digging on DejaNews and only came up
with a couple of posts that concerned a conflict between the
temperature monitor and the sound card (fix available for NT but
not Linux).

Are there any benchmarks, or other guidelines, for estimating
what kind of average/peak load such a server could sustain?

Thank you.

Ditto Max *must* use the ditto dash -- the one that came with the tape
drive. It won't work on the standard floppy controller.

>
> If it can use the Dash, how do I get the system to properly recognize
> it, at the kernel level?

There are two kinds of Ditto Dash controller cards. The Ditto Dash
itself is an ISA plug-and-play (PNP) adapter so you will need to use the
isapnp utility. There is also a Ditto Dash DX card that is not PNP. In
either case, you need to set the right values for IRQ, etc. when you
compile ftape.

>

These can be modules.

>
> How can I format a tape I've used already?

Ditto Max will not format tapes. This is not a Linux issue, but a
limitation of the drive itself. You need to get the official
factory-formatted cartridges made especially for the Ditto Max.

>
> Thanks for anything you can help with! You guys are awesome!

Having said all that, I must admit I can't get the Ditto Max to work on
my system (tried on both SuSE and Slackware). In both cases, it "sort
of" works. The ftmt utility works. I can read and write to the tape with
tar and with taper. But, the performance is incredibly slow. Something
like .5 MB/min where it does 18 MB/min under Win 98. This is due to the
fact that it can't seem to get into "streaming" mode. It "shoe shines"
on each write to the tape. Also, I have never been able to read back
more than about 10 MB without getting unrecoverable errors. I have tried
many variations on whatever configuration options I could find.

If anyone can do better than this, I'd like to know how they did it!

Good advice - I have been runing a K6-2-300 in an Epox MVP-3E motherboard
and it is fine (the Epox has a 1M cache, which is a nice feature). system
is stable for weeks, typically till I take it down for some reason. In fact
the only time it has been unstable was when I was clocking the cpu at 350.

I could really use another one or two serial ports. It would cost me about $90
to replace one of my ISA cards with a PCI version and buy a cheap "paddle card",
but I'd prefer to leave that old ISA card in place (especially since the drivers
are installed and configured) and buy a cheap PCI serial port card. Preferably
one that would work in Win95 and OS/2 but that's not critical.

Any suggestions?

My thought exactly - but I don't have another, and am reluctant to buy

No, that is the SB Live.

The SB 128 works perfectly with:

That is only the digital sound, MIDI can only be made from sw.

I have been looking for a cheap modem I can use for voice and fax. I'm about
to get the Boca MD56EMS, which is an external modem that supports voice,
speakerphone, and fax, which is all I need. It's K56flex, which I assume is

Does anyone have one of these? Is there a reason why I should avoid it?

Subject: QIC02 TAPE, SuSE 5.3.. how to install and read? Thank you fellows in advance!

Hello!
I have old fashion QIC02 Tape (150MB extended to 250MB) which is connected
through slot as modem etc and then, as a 25pin connector to the external
drive. I think that manufacturer is ARCHIVE.

According instructions I made new kernel but I don't know how to init
(mount) and to read data from tape.

Can you help me because I am very fresh to that Linux (but have some
experience with unix sco).

10ks in advance,

Blackie

Unless your BIOS refuses to let the machine boot (which can often be changed
in the config), this should be no problem. I have lots of Linux machines
running which only had keyboard and video card in them once - to change the
BIOS settings so they wouldn't care in the future. Now they run headless. I
do the admin over the network or through the serial port, depending on where
they are.
