I've seen the claim many times... but my Athlon MB has temp sensors,
and runs as much as 5C cooler (both case temp and CPU temp) with the
side panel off my case.

My computer has this card. It works just fine under Linux however, I am
using RH 7.0 Support for this card is an option when configuring for a new

Is it possible that Mandrake 7.2 has the same provisions?

Date: Thu, 08 Feb 2001 20:35:00 GMT
I just compiled 2.4.1 with scsi support in the kernel, using the
aix7xxx.o drivers to push an Adaptec 29160. here is the problem...
It finds the card, then produces the following loop...
Aborting command due to timeout: pid0 scsi0 channel 0 id 0 lun0 inquiry
00 00 00 ff 00
Scsi host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
scsi bus is being reset for host channel 0 - trying harder...
over and over...
Being new to scsi, I don't have a clue as to why this is bombing. I have
heard that the aiz7xxx drivers are incomplete for the 29160, but is is
supposed to run in a degraded fashion.
Anyone have any pointers to help me get this going?

You should double-check first if Linux supports the Raid feature (well
feature, let's call it the Raid windows driver) of the HPT370. IIRC, it
doesn't.

Well, I had much the same attitude, and did eventually get a bunch of
three FA311's working (up to a point) under linux. But the performance
was pathetic. They also failed Netgear's own test software back to back
(cross over cable) under DOS. The performance under doze was also
pathetic. I exchanged them for FA310's which are tulip based and gave
orders of magnitude better bandwidth. I came across suggestions that the
Nat Semi chip was buggy. Maybe the FA311 problems have now been ironed
out, but I continue to hear of people with problems, so I wouldn't bank
on it.
I tried very hard over a period of 3 weeks before deciding the FA311s
had a basic design flaw. I really do not advise you to waste your time
like I did. Yes you can get them limping along, but I would suggest that
you try and exchange them. Or even bin them if you didn't pay too much.
However, if you really insist on getting them going, you need to visit
Donald Becker's site: http://www.scyld.com/network/index.html and read
several documents there. You will find versions of the natsemi driver
that you will be able to get working. But I still think you should do
something more useful with your time :-(

Hi Phil,
There is a an entry in the BIOS you can change. Its in the "BIOS Features
Setup Menu". The entry is called "MPS Version Control for OS" and allows you
to choose between the MPS 1.1 and MPS 1.4 implementations.

Have one right here...Agenda's VR3. Native linux, 2.4.0 pre 9 kernel, X
with rxvt WM and ash and bash shells. Still in development, but you can
order the developer's model. Try:
http://www.agendacomputing.com
Runs on two AAA batteries and is smaller than a Palm (at least the ones
I've seen).

If you are new to scsi, you need to be very careful with cables and
termination. Check all of that first before suspecting the software. Has
it worked with another version or even another OS?

I think when I set up my hp printer I used Webmin on Caldera linux to

My brother was having thermal problems with an overclocked Celeron. He took

If you mean the Epson 1640SU Photo, it works extremely well under linux
with better support than under doze. It has both usb and scsi interfaces
and is provided with a usb cable.

If 1600 dpi is enough, the 1640SU does a very respectable job of
scanning slides.
Visit http://www.mostang.com/sane/,
http://freecolormanagement.com/sane/,
http://www1.jump.net/~dnelson/linux/usb/,
and follow the links. This assumes that you will use usb, although you
will need sane regardless.
For scanning capture, xsane, gimp, and xscanimage are among the
possibilities. Gimp is especially good because you can use the colour
management package above (excellent). Only downside is that Gimp does
(did) not support 14-bit per pixel external range. The current xsane
handles 14 bits happily. Of course, even at 8bit/pixel, the scanner
still uses 14 bits internally.
If you are a newbie and decide on usb, you may need to compile a kernel.
2.2.18 or 2.4.1 work fine and are current. But compiling a kernel can be
intimidating for a newbie, mainly because of the overwhelming number of
configuration choices presented. Read the HOWTOs and try it. However,
you will want to apply two small patches to
linux/drivers/usb/scanner.{c,h} for the 1640.
Examine linux/drivers/usb/scanner.c and insert the 1640SU entry if it is
not already there:-
/* Seiko/Epson Corp. */
{ 0x04b8, 0x0101 }, /* Perfection 636U and 636Photo
*/
{ 0x04b8, 0x0103 }, /* Perfection 610 */
{ 0x04b8, 0x0104 }, /* Perfection 1200U and
1200Photo */
{ 0x04b8, 0x010a }, /* Perfection 1640SU and
1640SUPhoto */
Alternatively, you can pass these values as module parameters by a line
in
/etc/modules.conf:-
options scanner product=0x10a vendor=0x4b8
And in scanner.h:-
Look for RD_NAK_TIMEOUT and make sure that it is at least 20. I use 40:-
#define RD_NAK_TIMEOUT (40*HZ) /* Number of X seconds to wait */
When you configure the kernel, perhaps using "make xconfig", select
CONFIG_USB=m -- compile USB as a module
CONFIG_USB_DEBUG=y -- probably a good idea until everything is
workng
CONFIG_USB_DEVICEFS=y
CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y -- you will only want to turn the scanner on
-- occasionally, if only to save the lamp life
CONFIG_USB_UHCI=m -- if this is what your mbrd needs
CONFIG_USB_SCANNER=m
CONFIG_PROC_FS=y -- useful for checking.
(Those are for 2.2.18. 2.4.1 are similar)

The 3c905 has been supported since it came out, for at least 5 years.
The 3c905C is supported by all current kernels. There is a new
card from 3com, the 3c905CX, as far as I recall, that is not yet
supported because of some issues with the interface description
from 3com. I.e. it's missing or wrong. Ask Donald Becker (the/an

If it doesn't work, and it's a 3c905c, it's a hardware issue. Move the
card to a busmastering slot.

Hmmm, be careful of this. This sounds like a flatbed scanner with a
film adapter? They aren't usually very good quality if that's what
you're looking for. Flatbed's are probably good enough to scan neg's &
slides for display on a web page but not for printing at decent sizes
- for that you need a dedicated film scanner. These are more expensive
but work pretty well.

Check http://www.hamrick.com for an application called Vuescan. I use
it here under Linux with a Nikon Coolscan III (LS30) attached to an
Adaptec 2906 PCI SCSI controller. It's shareware and runs on 'doze,
Mac and Linux. Does a pretty good job for me. I'm in the middle of
scanning my entire slide & neg colection and transferring it to CD. Ed
Hamrick seems very helpful and would probably tell you about your
favoured scanner. He hangs out on comp.periphs.scanners quite a lot as
well...
