Not bad. Looks like you saved yourself about $200 over 13 years. You
should be proud of yourself. Others were more interested in
performance, and were willing to pay for it. What fools!

1. Make sure you dont have "Memory hole at 16MB" enabled in your BIOS.
2. Make sure your kernel is compiled without the "Limit memory to low
16MB" option (under "General setup").

Geeze, I've never installed a scsi drive, but I've seen the same error
message on some lde drives I've installed (8 gig drives). The way I
cured the problem was to first install the drive under dos or windows..
the drive manufacturer has a boot patch for large drives that I
installed.. then when I went to linux install everything was cool.
Still don't understand what that was about, but it worked.

Just and idea.. maybe you've tried this already.

When we call GTE--Bell Atlantic too?-- the first thing the
sales rep says is the conversation is being taped. Then they
tell us that linux "won't work", and windows is required.
I've heard they will disconnect service if they find out
you're running linux. We have to lie and say we're running
windows, and sometimes their installer refuses to hand
over the modem and splitter and get out of the house
with his stinking windows CD, and he has the
already-turned-on ADSL turned OFF.

So, what do you want to bet MS denies linux users
refunds based on GTE tape recordings where we
confessed under duress to using windows? We're
going to concentration camps, I tell you.

My IDE worked fine with RH 5.1 out of the box... You'll need to figure
out which ide
device it's on, ie, /dev/hda,b,c or d and then... (for my machine) :-
mkdir /ls120
mount -t vfat /dev/hdd /ls120
ls /ls120
and you should see the contents....
"/dev/hdd" is my fourth ide channel (ie, second cable, slave).
Hope this helps.

Hi No-spam

I have a 8100I running under NT4.0 SP4 and linux *.36 it works fine.
However I will qualifiy that by saying that I have not used it as a writer
under Linux.

Also I have noticed the following issues under NT. The drive performs
nicely under NT but the supplied software does have a problem with NT
Explorer. It will crash Explorer from time to time when used with the
CDROM set to emulate a disk drive. The unfortunate thing is I like using
it in this mode. Thisa is a new piece of hardware for me and I really
havent tried many of the other features this drive is Capable of.

Under both operating systems the drive is fast! :) By the way your price
is very good a hundered dollars less that my local cost a month ago.

I think that's dependent on the kernel. There's a patch for 2.0.*
kernels, but I think 2.2.1 already includes support, so you may as
well get that.

You may have solved the problem by now and here is my tale of woe. I was
so sure my mouse was on com1 (old dos guy) that I assiged it the linux
equivalent. Well what a nasty surpise after reinstalling RH 5.2 too many
more times I was checking my modem (still isn't recognized) and realized

Well I figured out my problem, this solution should fix alot of people's problem's
with ATI cards.

I was eventually able to figure out (via the XFree86 FAQ) that if you have an ATI
card with TV output, you MUST DISCONNECT the cable from the TV out jack for it to
work. That's all I did, and now it works like a dream.

The cards affected by this include the Xpert@Play and Xpert@Play98, the All in Wonder
and All in Wonder Pro, and the 3D Xpression with PC2TV.

Hope this helps people: I was trying to get X working for 2 days before I figured
this out. I think I'm going to send an e-mail to the author of the Mach64 server
readme, to make sure this information gets included in there.

Just got 2.2.1 going with an Opti 930 card. Alan Cox has been doing a
great job of modularizing the sound drivers, so it actually took a fair
bit of reading to get everything working. I assume that you had to use
the OSS-free drivers for 2.0.36? If so I suggest that you take a copy of
the o/p from /dev/sndstat under 2.0.36 and then use those values as
parameters for loading the modules in /etc/conf.modules.

The relevant part of my /etc/modules looks like this:

alias sound-slot-0 mad16
alias mixer0 mad16
alias audio0 mad16
alias midi0 mad16
alias synth0 opl3
options sb mad16=1
options mad16 mpu_io=0x300 mpu_irq=5 io=0x604 irq=9 dma=0 dma16=1

# I value my hearing, so.....
post-install mad16 /usr/bin/aumix -v 40 -w 80

options opl3 io=0x388
post-install mad16 /sbin/ad1848_mixer_reroute 14 8 15 3 16 6

alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-26 bsd_comp

Those last 3 -- "ppp-compress-nn" -- don't seem to be documented
anywhere, at least I couldn't find anything. And extensive grepping
through sources didn't turn up much of help. You will gather that I am
not very familiar with the kernel sources. :-)
So some of the above is guesswork, but it all appears to work. Maybe an
expert will correct if any of the above is mistaken?

ad1848_mixer_reroute is given in source form in one of the documentation
files.

Of course, your parameters will be different. Hope this helps.

Better try a 3rd time. And REALLY be specific this time.

What does "wont [sic] mount the disk" mean? It doesn't
appear to even be partitioned, so it certainly can't be
mounted with the "mount" command, which is what Linuxers
mean by "won't mount". What do you mean?

The error messages you're getting are normal and only a
problem if you ignore the warning.

Hi,

I'm new to Linux, but have to work with WinNt all day so want something
that works when I get home.

I've obtained an old 846/33 Laptop with 16Mb ram, but only 170MB HD
space in total. It's currently running Win95 and MS Office (so it's
last owner must have had a sence of humor) but I'm looking at installing
something like the Mandrake distribution (RedHat with the K Desktop
Environment x-windows).

All the machine will be used for is word processing - looking at
WordPerfect and Telnet through a PCMCIA modem card.

Is this practicle, will it fit?

Hope someone can spare the time to help a Linux newbie.

get the 3.3.3.1 SVGA driver...they do not have a specific TNT driver yet... Make
sure you get the rest of the 3.3.3.1 files...you can skip the other card driver
files though...
And then run XF86Setup.... there you will see a tab for cards...click it and
then in the lower tight hand corner is a button for detailed list...here you
will see the TNT listed...but it is using the SVGA driver file.

Hope this helps you....My TNT runs great but does not have the accelleration it
should as they have not written a TNT specific driver...This is in the works I
believe...

yet. Anybody know about planned support?? The x11.org and xfree86 sites
don't mention these cards directly.

Also, to kind of swerve off on a tangent, I'm looking at a new video card.
Does anyone have any recomendations. I'd like to stick with the creative
cards, since they're industry standard AND creative has hired a full time
linux crew to write drivers. But I also like the Diamond Monster cards.
I'm looking for bleeding edge, here, with 3D audio and stuff like that.

Well, thanks for putting up with my newbie pandering. Take care

Jim

What does

xmodmap -pke | grep 22

say? It should say "keycode 22 = BackSpace". Otherwise, try to do

xmodmap -
keycode 22 = BackSpace
^D

(The last line is supposed to mean control-D) And see if this helps.

Maybe this will help you a bit: the Matrox Mystique and Matrox
Mystique 220 are PCI card. The Mystique G200 is a AGP video
card!! So it will only work on a AGP port... I 've never seen a
mystique S220 (I work at Matrox). About X-Windows, I can't
really help you for the moment because I ain't installed Linux on my
computer yet, but I'm planning to...

Read "man XF86Config". Then change the Protocol setting in the
XF86Config file to match what "mouseconfig" put in
/etc/sysconfig/mouse.

Eric,
There is no way in HELL your modem will work in Linux. WinModems are designed
to use Windows based drivers, and is configured to work with Windows ONLY.
WinModems are just another Windows monopoly. Sorry!
