It certainly wasn't my intention to deceive anybody with that review.
The web site has a link expressly for the author to provide information
on the book. Naturally, I used it. The thing had a rating system, which
I assumed (incorrectly, obviously) wouldn't be visible from the author's
review. I've submitted the same comments to Amazon.com, but they've not
put them up yet. I know from previous experience with my other books
that Amazon.com does *NOT* do this. Having been alerted to this fact,
I'm immediately writing to Fatbrain.com to try to have the matter
corrected. With any luck they'll leave my comments up but remove the
5-star rating. (At least, unless and until somebody else gives it that
rating. ;-) )

Subject: TYAN TIGER 133 (VIA APOLLO PRO 133A)

Hello,

my boss recently bought a dual PIII machine with this motherboard
and hard drive:

TYAN TIGER 133 (VIA APOLLO PRO 133A)
(VT82C596B)
WINBOND W83977ATF Super I/O CHIP

IBM DTLA 307045 (45GB IDE UDMA66)

Upon Linux (RH6.1) installation, fdisk fails to see /dev/hda.
It also fails to see /dev/hde, with a PCI PROMISE IDE-UDMA66
controller.

Normally, I would start installation, switch to CTRL+ALT+F2,
do a 'cat /proc/pci' to see where to pop the hard drive, reboot,
then 'text ide2=0xd800,0xdc00' and then I would be able to
install normally (at UDAMA33). Then I would upgrade the kernel
and patch it with the PROMISE IDE controller patch, reboot,
and everything would be fine.

Now, since install fails with both onboard AND pci ide-control-
lers, I suspect it is the MOTHERBOARD.

I see within the newer kernels that there is a VT82***** chip-
set option within 'Block Devices' within kernel config.

Are there updated boot disks that will still permit me to do
an installation, or am I doomed and should I throw this
mboard at my boss?

Wondering...

Nothing wrong with your info. Linux uses some of the space for
its housekeepking such as superblock copies. I would not quibble over
it. In fact I would expect as much from a big drive like this. Just
enjoy the storage room.

Subject: SCSI Problem with Mandrake 7.1
Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 00:50:46 -0400

I've been trying to install a SCSI card (Adaptec AHA2940U2W) and not having
very good luck. (Since there's no relevant documentation from either Adaptec
or Mandrake, luck is all I have to go on.) Here's what's happening:

When I boot the system goes through its normal scan of the hardware, finds the
IDE hard drive and IDE CD drive, then says "SCSI bus not found". Shortly
after this comes up:

================================================================

       Adaptec AH-2940U2W SCSI BIOS v2.20.0

[pause]
Press Ctrl A for SCSI Select Utility

[if I just let it go, in a couple seconds it says:]

Time Out Failure During SCSI Inquiry Command!

        Rescanning For SCSI Devices

[pause, then]

SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 0) timed out - trying harder

================================================================

It will repeat those last two lines as long as you let it. So I reboot.
(Ctrl-Alt-Del works fine most of the time.) This time I pres "Ctrl-A" when it
says I can and go into the "SCSI Select(TM) Utility v2.20.0" and find lots of
selections I can make. One that I can't select that I know I'd like to is HELP.
It's not there. Nor is there any documentation. I've gone looking at the
websites for Adaptec, Mandrake, and Macmillan (Macmillan has partnered with
Mandrake to sell and support v.7.1, but they're much more tuned into selling).
None of these sites has any documentation or drivers to get this SCSI card
working on Mandrake.

Plowing away in the "SCSI Select(TM) Utility v2.20.0", I went into "SCSI
Device Configuration" and set SCSI Device ID #1's "Sync Transfer Rate" to 40.0
MB/Sec. Rebooting again, there was no difference.

I ran a scan on all the SCIS IDs and it found only the card itself (on SCSI ID
#7), not the CDRW which I set to 1 on it (with a jumper). This scan found
only #7, not #1.

Went in to the same screen on the next boot and set "Initiate Wide
Negotiation" to "No" on all SCSI IDs except #1 (the CDRW) and #7 (the Adaptec
itself). Rebooted and the same thing happened. I made some other changes and
the same happened each time.

What's missing?

OK, now I understand why I've seen this situation before - Fatbrain's not
telling the authors that their ratings are visible on their web site.

OK, I didn't mean to sound harsh. And thanks for trying to correct the
situation at Fatbrain.

It is SCSI, hooked up to a BusLogic BT-946C. I don't have a problem writing
CD-R media. I want to be able to use the CD-RW media just like another hard
drive, as I do using Adaptec DirectCD under Windows. I seem to recall
somewhere that someone had written a UDF filesystem driver for 2.2.x
kernels, and that someone extended it to allow you to use CD-RW disks just
like DirectCD does.
