I used an external modem... and always would have... and when X2 is first
out, it costs about $250 (CND) or so to get one... sorry not being clear
about the currency...

Not exactly... But the money usually got spent on some other items because I
need it...

Just installed Redhat 5.2. Had to get the xfree86 3.3.3.1 from the net to
support the TNT.
Works well and seems fast, but I have nothing to compare with as this is my
first Linux.

16Mb of Ram and a 486 is enought to build a server. It's not enought for a
desktop machine. X11+Corel+KDE+Netscape take a lot's of memory (more than
64Mb!).

Of course if you use Vi and Latex in command line mode is ok.

Jacques.

that's correct, but that does not hold true for the pentium line (p5,

anybody know if Linux will take advantage of the extra 4 bits?

Subject: Red hat 5.2 Install on k6 233 reboots
Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 20:56:57 -0330

I am trying to install Red Hat 5.2 on my AMD K6 233 with 64 M of RAM. I
have had 5.2 installed before but had to format the partitions. Every time
I try t install now at some point in the install program (different points
each time) the system reboots. This was also happening before I formatted
the partitions (main and swap) and was just trying to boot into my previous
install of 5.2.
The problem started occuring after I purchased a HP CD-Rewriter 7200+
drive. But that doesn't seem to be the problem. Once I installed the drive
I formatted both my win98 and linux partitions as I mentioned and then
re-installed win98. I left my linux partitions alone at first since I
booted from a floppy and figured when windows over wrote the MBR it wouldn't
matter since a boot floppy doesn't use the MBR.
Anyway I've had linux installed about three times before (different
distributions) and I've never had this problem. Any help would be
appreciated.
Oh and I don't think I need a BIOS upgrade because I had 5.2 installed
and working previously.
    Thank you in advance,

JayBoyd

Actually, I was trying to find out whether there is a version K6-2 which
may have a problem with Linux. I didn't even know till now that MS has
a buggy Windoze which does not work on K6-2.

In any case, I think I got the answer. There are some which only work
with 66Mhz FSB and that should marked on the chip itself. I was (and
still) having trouble with installing linux on K6-2 machine on FIC
PA2013 MB. It could because of other hardware in this computer. I am

This sounds seriously horrible. You would almost certainly
cause more hard drive deaths from the extra had motion.

Not in my experience. I've seen many more complete disk
failures than single-sector read errors on recent production
disks. Back in the old days you might have a small spot with
errors show up before the whole thing dies. These days the
hardware has already tried to correct it and the disk is
well on the way out before you see the first problem.

Subject: Re: WHEE!!!! Linux on an 386 (for real) w/ 4M
Date: Mon, 01 Feb 1999 12:11:28 +1100

For what it's worth,

It was a 386/20, with am 8M (or was it 16M?) swap partition, and a 10M
swap file as well. The swap file was needed so I had enough memory for
the 'make zImage'.

The two disks I had were _VERY_ old 80M and 40M IDE's that I scrounged.

No tuning or optomisation was done on the old clunker, and I scrapped
it a few weeks later. Been there; done that. No need to revisit that
experience again for no (financial) reasons. :-)

While it was compiling, the disk was running flat out. Swapping was
killing it, not CPU power.

Why do we do these things to our selves? I have perfectly good
486 & 6x86's at home with lots more memory that do the job. Then
there's the Sun Sparc2 as well at home with Red Hat 5.1 on it as well;
another slug.

Maybe I have some strange need to run Linux on underpowered hardware?
