Looking for ways of putting clever error protection on *archival* media
seems a much more practical goal. After a couple of terms of information
theory, I reckoned that, by considering 512M of (data + good ECC) -
maybe a few hundred MB of data - as a 2^16 x 2^16 bit matrix, and then
transposing the matrix before storage so that adjacent bits were far
apart on the disc, you could probably retrieve all the information from
a CD after using a normal hole-punch on it.

Maybe a few more terms of information theory will tell me where the
error was ...

Yo,
I don't have Afterstep, and selected it as my manager in X windows. How might
i go about to change that without using X windows? (X Windows auto closes when
it can't find Afterstep, it just goes out). Does anyone have ANY idea what i
should do??

I'll have to check, but I believe that this is the same motherboard I
bought and couldn't get Red Hat 5.1 to install on. (Is your board
support dual processors?).

Anyway, our boards support the same SCSI which is equivalent to the
Adaptec 2940 U2W. I posted a question just last night asking if anyone
has successfully installed 5.2 on a system with this SCSI.

According to Red Hat's web site, the Adaptec 2940 U2W is a Tier 2
supported adapter -- it should work, but is not supported.

I would sure love to hear the current status of U2W support and any
success stories with Red Hat 5.2 myself.

Hmmm... the cheapest for what? If you exclude tape as being "serial only",
it appears that CD-R costs around $2.00 / GB these days, once you've paid
for your drive. Amortizing the burner across 100GB, you get a cost of
roughly $5/GB. SPARQ costs $40 / GB, JAZ and SYJET rather more.

And regular PC disk drives cost $21 / GB... and come in sizes an order of
magnitude better than the other disk technologies!

First of all - this has nothing to do with your linux setup, since the
system is putting out an error before even hitting LILO, much less the
kernel.

If you can do an install you can boot from floppy, so entering
"vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3" there should get you to your system. From
there, try running lilo and setting up lilo.conf by hand.

I'm afraid I may not be a good person to give advice here - my
motherboard (a Tyan) flatly refuses to boot from the MBR on my hard
disk (Linux, Windows, makes no difference), and I've been booting with
LILO on a floppy (but kernels on hard disk) for a month or two now...

The point is - WHY did they choose not to support X2, when so many
other ISP's jumped right on it. I chose my ISP based on its good track

He didn't consider more than doubling his throughput much of an
improvement. Pretty odd stance. He doesn't place much value on his own
time. I consider being able to send and receive my work (and play) in
half the time a tremendous improvement.

That's okay. We all place different values on different things. Saving
time was not important to him. What I don't understand is why he feels
the need to criticize those who wanted to save time, and were willing
to pay for it. That's why microwave ovens were invented. :)

My guess is that SuSE 5.2 is libc5 based, whereas the XFree

You want to look for these packages compiled against libc5.

Somehow, I think your modem is actually a "soft" modem, or a "host
controlled" modem, as you mention a PCI modem enumerator, and that is
, I believe the crux of the problem of most of the other PCI modems we
will have problems with under Linux -- You see, the PCI modem
enumerator is actually a software emulator for a UART, and the
manufacturers (so far) have only provided that software for the mass
market/high volume/high potential profit OS's sold by Bill Gates. I
haven't heard yet of Rockwell releasing any other info on their
chipsets, or modem emulator software for any other OS yet, and they
probably don't think they have much financial incentive to do so,
since they are making money as things are, and we don't collectively
seem to be enough of a market for them to pay a programmer to write or
debug the same for us, and once the cat is out of the bag, then they
would loose some or all of the control over the software, and possible
the market too, maybe for the microsoft market too?

Some of the Rockwell chipset modems merely use a software scheme to
handle the compression, and can be made to work with Linux by turning
compression off, but like you, I'm looking for a good modem too, and
found out too late that both of my new modems won't work on anything
but Winslop.

You are looking in the wrong place. Linux only looks for *one* NIC.
after it finds one, it stops looking, unless you tell it to. If you
are booting from lilo, add the line append = "ether=0,0,eth1" then it
will "notice your card. to allow all the other machines to use the

Does linux include support for the Kingston KNE30, KNE40 or KNE110
nic's? I did not see these listed as compatible or incompatible in the
hardware compatibility howto.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Try turning your UDMA off in your BIOS. Be careful, I trashed my hard drive my
leaving UDMA on with the RedHat 5.1 install.

No problem. Linux will just see it as an ATAPI CD-ROM. Mine works fine.

I have a Fritz! PCI ISDN card with a Linux Mandrake (RedHat based) 5.2
System. I have installed the new 2.2.0 kernel with ac1 patch. I have read
and tried to install all the isdn add-on packages including:isdn4k, isdn4d.
Most documentation is in German which I don't understand. can someone try
and walk me through the card and syncPPP installation? (I have kisdn
installed too - but it doesn't identify a card). modprobe hisax results in a
resource busy.

I suppose part of what I am saying is that seldom used online media
might as well be archival media, with respect to reliability considerations.

Or: do the 16-64G "consumer" harddisks come with warnings to
the consumer, along the lines of "You must ensure that all disk blocks
are accessed at least once every 4 years, using a tool such as a disk
surface checker, to prevent correctable errors becoming uncorrectable."?
