If your SB is ISA, you can configure it with the isapnptools. I assume both the
sound card and the modem work under Win98, so boot Win98, get the resources
from there (I/O addresses and IRQs), then configure the sound card (and the
modem, if it's ISA) with the isapnptools.

Before you do that, check if you have a conflict. Configure the modem first,
connect and download some file from somewhere. While downloading, look in
/proc/interrupts, /proc/ioports, and see the rerources used by the modem.
Then configure the sound card, and see if you have indeed a conflict (you
probably do).

I have a SlotA 700 MHz T-bird & an ASUS K7V m'board & they aren't
stable. I get about 1 hour max before a hang. I've read about other
people getting this combo to work, & some are having better results
with ASUS' newer K7V-T.

I'm using 128M Crucial mem & Matrox G400 AGP.

If I hadn't been so impatient, I'd be waiting for the SocketA stuff to
get out & stable before blowin' the bucks.

I previously built a K7 550 on a Microstar 6167 (AMD chipset) & it was
bulletproof. Unfortunately I sold it *before* buying the T-bird.
Anyways, I started with a "boring" old 2.0.30 kernel - worked fine,
then installed 2.2.13 - which worked - then patched to ATA33, which
also worked.

Yup. I got it because my winmodem won't function with linux. I was on the
lookout specifically for a hardware modem. It is external to the PC, plugged
into a com port extender card.

I just saw a previous post of yours about the same problem. I understand that
the modem is ISA. The sound card cannot be on com2!!! Com2 (/dev/ttyS1 under
Linux) is a serial port. The sound card is either PCI or ISA. If you use the
isapnptools, it goes like this:

Save /etc/isapnp.conf if there is one:
mv /etc/isapnp.conf /etc/isapnp.conf.old

Make a new one
pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf

Uncomment the resources for your modem and sound card as you got them from
Win98.

isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf

Tell the kernel what settings your modem is using. For instance, if you set the
modem on IRQ 11, then

setserial /dev/ttyS0 irq 11

(man setserial, pnpdump, isapnp for more).

That should do it.

works, but is apparently rather awkward to use. See

Check the relevant HOWTOs. I had an external modem that I connected to my
PC on the COM1 port on my motherboard, and I encountered no problems. Did the
COM port extender card come with its own device driver for Windows? If
so you want to check and make sure that this extender card is
supported in Linux. I suppose in the worst case you could put
the modem on the COM ports on the motherboard by unplugging whatever
device you have on them to make room for the modem. I am positive that
you will have no problems if it is on the COM ports on the motherboard.

Sorry for the delay, was offline for some days ;-)

Some possibilities:

Try to find out which interrupts are in use:

cat /proc/interrupts

should show a line

12: blabla XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse

What does your BIOS show at startup? Does it say something like PS/2 Mouse/port
etc. detected? (Might not work for you, perhaps you don't get any messages at
all)

As for the kernel,

- Character devices => Mouse support
- Character devices => Mice => PS/2

is sufficient.

Do you have any hardware you don't need for booting (like TV cards, sound
etc.) Sometimes removing them temporarily or just changing PCI slots helps,
especially when you have a stupid PnP BIOS (just had such a case).

Generally, you should avoid running gpm and X at the same time - that doesn't
seem to be your problem, though...

Hope this helps

Deselect the 'set version information on all symbols'; that'll stop it.

If not (*and* you're recompiling your existing kernel version)

(let's say you're running 2.2.16)

get as far as 'make modules'

cd /lib/modules

mv 2.2.16 ok.2.2.16

cd - # go back to the source tree

make modules_install.

This will stop 'unresolved symbols'; if it doesn't , let me know,
cos it's always worked for me.

Hello Ron,

this card is supported but you will need a relatively new PCMCIA-driver.

You should at least have version 3.1.15 of the pcnet_cs driver (look at
/lib/modules/<kernel-version>/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o with the strings command
-- the version-number should be in there somewhere).

If you have an older version, look at http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/
and update your pcmcia-package (instructions at this site).

If this is not your problem, you will find additional help at that site.

Hello,

I have a Tyan Tiger (133A VIA Apollo) motherboard
PC, and I cannot get the ethernet card to work.

The driver I compiled into the kernel reports the
card and its hardware address at the beginning.

Netconfig just causes segmentation fault.

The e-card is Intel EtherExpress Pro100+.

This is strange because I have about ten other PCs
running just fine with this card. Could it be a
'bad hardware' case? If so, why am I getting its
hardware address at boot?

Strange things have been happening with this motherboard,
like I couldn't install Linux until I downloaded the
updated boot disk (6.2) from RedHat. I am wondering if
it is because of the motherboard? I never had problems
with Intel 810 or similar motherboards, but this has
a VIA Apollo chipset.

Any issues with this chipset?

Thanks,

Yeah well, but most backups will be needed elsewhere too, so it's not
only backup but also removable media that count. Now you probably say: "
Use harddrive caddies!". Good point, but I'm not sure if every person I
need to show one of my designs (for example) will have the needed bay
etc... But I know they all use SCSI, if not, well, I always carry with
me a converter (I'm referring to internal devices, open the comp,
connect, leave it open and there you go, of course externel ones are
more practical here, but if somebody doesn't have SCSI you're f'''ed...)

Any good PS printer will do the trick. Also the Epson 800's and 740 have
very good drivers for Linux (where you can go up to 1440xwhateveritis,
can't remember). Quality with my 740 is very good, although, because of
the conversion, not so sharp as with Win, but still very impressive (you
don't see the difference without putting the printou directly in front
of yer eyes)

Oh, the drivers I am referring to are from RH 6.2, don't know about any
other distro as I switched to RH from SuSE lately, and the bought the
740 (yeah, even old ones are still sold!)

The best driver for the Epson Stylus line is the one from the gimp
print project, called "stp" in Ghostscript. It is reputed to produce
better output than the Windows drivers in some cases.

This is basically the only free software driver available for Linux
that doesn't suck for photo work on modern inkjets. Buy an Epson.

See http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?predef=CJ

I actually just met the author of this driver at the printing summit;

The "a2ps" package provides a pretty good answer to this problem.
