Newbie-Gray screen with startx-Redhat 5.1
I am very new to Linux, the Redhat 5.1 installation from Que seemed clean
and straightforward. Install picked up the PS2 (MS IntelliMouse), NIC, also
had correct selection of Video Equipment: Optiquest V95 and STB Velocity
128. My processor is a PII400 Intel 440bx chipset 128 MB SDRAM.
The first install I made sure that X-Windows was selected and the color
depth was automatically determined. When I try to start x I hang with just
a dark gray screen, no crunching of the HDD (waited about 10 min. nothing)
The second install I set up the color depth myself and selected the no
chipset standard. The same thing happened.
Suggestions ?
Thank you for your time

Hello All,
I work at a small company where we used to have an NT server. It was
unreliable, costly and just gave us a few to many surprises. So we
switched to Linux, but we've inherited an HP surestore T4 tape drive
which, although it works, doesn't do certain things under Linux:
1) Compression. This appears to need the hp drivers for NT to make it
work, indeed, reading between the lines I get the impression that it's a
bit of a fib that it does compression, and I suspect that this is done
by the driver software using the computers CPU, rather than on the
drive. Can anyone shed any light on this
2) Streaming. I cant get the drive to stream, its all stop-start
stop-start. I'm using tar to do the backups, with the -z option to
compress the data. I suspect that the time that it takes to compress the
data is such that the system can't keep the drive supplied with a
constant flow of data ( so it has to keep stopping to let gzip finish
zipping up more data for it to write), however, I have also heard things
intimating that it has something to do with tar not being very
efficient. Again, can anyone illuminate me regarding this?
Finally can anyone tell me what kind of advantages (if any) I can expect
to get from messing around with the tapes blocksize and density using
mt?
TIA
Colum

I have RedHat Linux 5.1 installed on my machine with a HP PaintJet printer. I
tried to create the postscript.conf file using the RedHat tool but it doesn't
work as it gives me a sed error. So I tried guessing what the conf file
should be and it works OK except that it always assumes I am printing on A3
(even if I have tried to specify A4 and Letter sizes). Has anybody got the
proper prostscript.conf file for a HP PaintJet? or could anyone tell me where
I could get one from? Many thanks.

Guys,
I've got a Dell 400 Turtle Beach Montego A3D sound card. I'm running
Slackware 3.6 (kernel 2.0.35) and know that this card is not supported
in the kernel.
Are there any patches out there for this card? Has anyone been able to
get it to work under Linux?
Please CC any replies to me.
Thanks,

there.
Thanks,

I've been running a 3c509b under Linux for a year and a half now, with
no problems. You should definitely use the msdos setup program it
comes with to disable PnP, and to set the IRQ and I/O port (you say
you've done that). If it's still not working, you most likely have a
conflict with either your IRQ or your I/O port. Give the commands
cat /proc/interrupts
cat /proc/pci
cat /proc/ioports
to get an idea what's already in use (although not everything shows up
in there). If you can't find a conflict, you can try randomly
changing the IRQ and/or I/O port until things work.
Good luck.

I can do that easy... Web pages? I had someone hosting it for me... E-Mails?
I had it on someone else's POP/SMTP server as well...

Wrong again... V.90 is not 56KFlex... AFAIK, USR was the first vendor with
V.90 capable modems...
And 56K Flex were somewhat on an even playing field as compared to X2
protocal, and as well, a lot of larger ISPs are also using X2...
As for your claim of saving money... Yeah, wasted time, saved money... Stuck
with 14.4 for a great long time... didn't even had the chance to use
V.34+...
too fregging bad.

Hello,
I am hoping somebody here can help me out.
I have a linux system which uses a GD5446 2MB video card in a PCI slot.
When the kernel boots, it does not recognize the card, though I do get video
(from reading dmesg I've found that it doesn't recognize the card as a known
device). While in terminal mode, no sweat, but as soon as I get into
Xwindows, there are problems. I can only enable 256 colors, and this really
bites a bit, esp. since I am using KDE.
I've run scanpci as root, and it tells me: No PCI !
Well, I do have PCI. I've looked in the pci.h file, but don't really know
what kind of entry to make for the GD5446 card.
The question is, then, am I looking in the right place to fix the problem,
and if so, can somebody help me fix it with the correct entry in pci.h? If
I'm walking down the wrong path, could somebody let me know that to and
perhaps suggest a better course of action?
As always, I appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thanks!
Michael

Dear sir,

However, when Red Hard try to detect my SCSI card, it hang up. I have
tried to install by using expert mode and I find the Linux fail to scan
my SCSI card.
What is the problem? Please give me some idea or hints. Furthermore, I
find that I need to Cold Boot my computer after the failure, otherwise,
my SCSI card cannot detect my hard disk. However, my SCSI hard disk is
working properly under Win98.

what does "wont mount the disk" mean? You had better attach error
messages or describe the phenoma nore specificly. Also you should
include your hardware information such as the SCSI controller.

Basically, this is only an warnning. If you stick to this disk in one
OS such as Linux, you can safely ignore this message.

I have a SCSI disk which has exact the same heads, sectors, and
cyclinders. However, because I donot know what the SCSI controller and hard
disk is, I only can guess the problem is your Linux kernel have not a
proper modules for the SCSI controller. For example, only the lastest
2.0.36 kernel with proper configuration supports Adaptec 78xx SCSI
controllers.
