Apologies for the 'babbling' ! As a newbie to Linux I was a bit confused
as to why I could download but not install these packages. I was unaware
of the difference -- lib5c <> glibc.
The reason I installed Suse rather then RedHat was quite simple. Redhat
refused to recognise my AHA152X SCSI card but Suse did ! I will probably
go Suse 6.0 in the near future and this should cure any further
problems.
Cheers,

The best systemcommander for multibooting is GRUB "The Great Unified

Sorry for a relative newbie question here, but I just installed a new
Fireport 40 scsi card and wanted to know if this could transfer data at
the SCSI-3 rate of 80 Mb/s? I configured it and currently it seems to
support the SCSI-2 wide configuration, but I have a quantum viking II

The modem did not fry. The chips on board are simply not setup to read the
jumpers. So resist the temptation, there is no point in trying. The
solution is to run the DOS program as I mentioned. If you can't run a DOS
program under Linux, the next step would be to figure out what the DOS
program is sending out and duplicate that with a Linux program. --

I would like to add the following, based on experience:

And format them on the machine you will install Linux on. Floppy
drives on different machines are not equal. If you format them under
DOS, use the /U option to format.

Look at your kernel's messages "/var/log/messages" or "dmesg" and
see if your adapter is recognized. You'll find some info
in "/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/tpqic02.c". Also, look in
"/usr/src/linux/Documentation/device.txt" for QIC-02. You can
define an environment variable "export TAPE=/dev/xxx", where
xxx is the correct device for your drive. Then tar, mt, ...
will use your tape drive, won't have to use "-f" parameter.

Subject: How to read forgeign DAT/Exabyte tapes on Linux
Date: 3 Feb 1999 13:16:54 GMT

Why won't my Linux machine recognize tapes written on compatible drives on
the Sun and HP workstations at work? A coworker just clued me in. It has
to do with the physical block size which on these drives (unlike QIC drives)
can actually vary. The magic incantation is

   mt setblk 0

This removes the driver's preconceived notion of 512-byte blocks. At this
point tapes from elsewhere are readable.

I haven't yet experimented goin the other way. The Sun/HP "mt" command does
not allow setting the block size, so I guess I have to find out what it is
and set it correctly from Linux when I write the tape.

Just in case this is useful to anyone.

Most PC's have a COM1 and a COM2 enabled by default. If you put your internal
modem on com1 or com2, it will interfere with the existing com ports, and I'm
not all that surprised that the modem did not work for you. Make sure you
disable whatever port conflicts with your modem, or put your modem on
com3 or com4. Also, if you have a serial mouse, make sure you do not have
an IRQ conflict between modem and mouse.

com1 and 3 share an IRQ and com2 and 4 share another IRQ. You dont want
to use 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 at the same time. So, if you have a serial mouse
on com1, don't put the modem on com3, but on com4.

Hope this helps,

Hi folks:

I used to run some dual PPro boxes and they'd served me well.
Now I decide to "upgrade" to a pair of PII333's on a Tyan Thunder II
(S1696, the monster-dual-CPU-with-sound-and-with-SCSI board). This
move has been nothing but trouble since. First, the dual on-board UW
SCSI refused to work. [I am now using my original AHA-2940 adapter.]
Then after I disabled it, I cannot install from CD-ROM-- every time it
hangs when the RH 5.1 installer reaches the SCSI-scanning stage. NOW
I get random garbage spewed to the printer some time after each reboot
of the machine. I realise that this may just be a toasted board, but
can someone tell me if there is something that I can try other than a
BIOS update, which I already did?

Details of box: Dual PII/333, 256MB of ECC SDRAM DIMM's, RHL
4.2, kernel version 2.2.1 (the problem does not seem to happen with
kerne; 2.1.129, the reason why I posted to the kernel list); AHA2940
with two 4G UW-SCSI drives, a plextor CD-ROM, a panasonic CD-R, and a
640MB SCSI MO drive. I am also using a logitech trackball, but not
the PS/2 kind. Printing from another machine, with the same cables,
seem to do fine.
