SOS!!
Problems with the booting of linux in a computer AMD K6-2 (300 MHz) with
i430TX (no AGP) and 128 MB, two hard drives and 1 CDROM. Can you help me?
After many attempts of booting with several kernels (2.0.29, 2.0.30, 2.1.48,
2.0.35, 2.0.36) through a boot-disk, LILO or LOADLIN (Symbol of System,
option F8 of Windows95), I realize only procedure that was operating:
1. I Start Windows95/98 (graphic environment)
2. I restart in MSDOS-Mode
3. C:> loadlin zImage2_2 root=/dev/hdc3 mem=128M no-hlt
If I dont use option no-hlt, the system starts but is hung in little
minutes, and it shown me all the processor registers, the stack and the
message "idle task may not sleep".
In the attempts rest of starting were remained hung when was ending the
load kernel in report: Loading linux ....... (!!stop!!)
My system crashes while its booting. I
I only can boot linux in three steps:
1> loading Windows95
2> Restart in MSDOS MODE
3> loadlin kernel2.2 /dev/hdc3 no-hlt (root in /dev/hdc3)

Same here, runs like a charm :-) using Linux 2.2.1
Ultra DMA works... on my 4.3G Seagate Medalist
also S3 TRio 3D AGP ( thus 2.2.1 for fbcon to get X working... )
Hauppage WinTV PCI
Sound Blaster PCI128
3dfx VooDoo 2 12M ( can't use at same time as fbcon :( thus buying new
v-card... anyone know how the Banshee's work? maybe I can just replace
both the VooDoo2 and Trio 3D with it? )
NewCom 56k v90+x2 ISA Modem
AcerScan 300F... ( almost got it working with SnapScan driver in Sane,
by editing source, but, not a programmer.. anyone else??? got the
included SCSI card working, with included 2.2.1 drivers )
And Win98 works as well as it ever does on this hardware too..
( Ok ok... it's actually a 333Mhz clocked at 100Mhz x 3.5 for 350, but
hey *grin* )

You might want to check around a bit. I am getting ADSL using GTE to move
bits but with an independent ISP. The service level I signed for (Silver)
is $90 per month from GTE and $89.95 per month from the indie (both incluse
local loop charges) Plus I get a fixed IP and a shell account!
I checked a few of the participating ISPs and most are charging way too
much but I didn't find _any_ that charge twice what GTE is charging for
residential service. About the worst were Surf City and Impulse Internet
Services who want $135.00 and $115.00 respectively. OTOH, Netquest
(http://www.netquest.net/dsl.html) and Flashcom
(http://www.flashcom.com/pricing2.html) were much more reasonable at $89.95
and $85 respectively.

SCSI tapes in general, so I suppose that the DDS3 is also supported.

A funny thing happened to me on the way to cyberspace . . .
I used setserial to set /dev/ttyS3 to IRQ 5, which is where I need to
squeeze my new modem into my crowded configuration. Worked fine-
until I rebooted, whereupon it set itself back to IRQ3. I had to
manually edit the 0setserial file to stop this from happening.

} Your second controller should be ide1, but you should not have to

I added secondary IDE controllers to two boxes that had only one on the
motherboard. I just set the IRQ dropped them in and Linux used them. I
did not configure the BIOS for either one, the BIOS doesn't know they
are there.

No, the matrox cards have separate memories. The current matrox available is
the G200, which I've seen in the $110 range for an 8 meg card. Note, the G200
comes in two varieties, the Mystique (lower performer but with a TV output) and
Millenium (higher performer). You want to download XFree 3.3.3.1 from your
Linux distributor or from the XFree86 site in order to support this card.
RedHat just released a new version of Xconfigurator which allows you to
configure the G200 (or you could use the xf86config which is somewhat harder to
use). Note, you want to set the depth to be 32 bits instead of 24, because a
number of broken programs (like netscape) don't like 24-bit visuals (and I
believe it is actually faster in processing the pixels). A 4 meg card would
give you 32-bit color at 1024x768. However, even though it would fit in 4meg,
my previous generation 4 meg Millenium-II won't do 32-bit color at 1152x868.

I got dhcpcd working with newer kernels by downloading the newest
dhcpcd from sunsite.unc.edu and the need for updated dhcpcd for
newer kernels is well-documented.

Might be what's biting me, then. I forgot to mention that I'm using
RH5.2 (Macmillan distribution). So you back-leveled to 0.4? Have to go
find out how to do that...
I just mounted the 2nd RH5.2 CDROM with the source RPMs and am trying to
figure out the sequence of steps to get from the mounted CD to "make
install". I got the mt-st sources and patches into
/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES and a file in /usr/src/redhat/SPECS. I figure
I'm supposed to gunzip the source and patch it, but the stuff in the
spec file looks like there's supposed to be some way to automate this.
What's my next step?
I'll mention that I just downloaded, patched, and built diald, so I know
how to do that. It's just the unpacking and installing of an RPM that
I'm clueless on. I think it's the source vs. binary thing that's
confusing me. The RPM chapter in the RH Installation Guide seems to
assume I'm installing a binary RPM.
I'm going to look at Maximum RPM on CDROM 3, but meanwhile maybe someone
will recognize my mental block and let me know what I'm missing here.

Dear sir,
I have tried to fixed this for a long time but didn't succeed, hope that
someone may help me out here.
Recently, I decided to install a Linux (slackware 3.0) into my old
computer. The install process (from CD) was easy and I encountered no
problem. However, after the installation, I couldn't mount the CDROM! I
typed the following:
mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/sbpcd /cdrom
and the system replied:
mount: /dev/sbpcd is not a block
Now I have no idea what should I do next, hope that you can help me out. My
CDROM is: TEAC 55A (panasonic compactible), @ 360h, connected to a ISA
panasonic interface card.
After then, I have try and look at the /proc/filesystems file,
minix
iso9660
ext2
..
..
..
iso9660
..
However, when I looked at the proc/devices file
it does not contain the spbcd as a block devices. it only contained the
following block device
2 fd
3 ide0
33 ramdisk
So, I don't know what should do next..
Hope that someone can help me out,
Thanx.
