We're shopping around for compute servers for our lab, and one of the systems
we're looking at is the Dell PowerEdge servers. One of the options is a
"PERC 2/SC RAID" controller.

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to get Linux running on this kind of
system? I'm still new to Linux and don't know which kinds of RAID systems it
will run on.

sorry for cross posting but here goes:
i need some help (if anyone can give it) with getting pcmcia to work on my
(notso)new laptop. i just obtained a ti travelmate 5300 133pentium laptop.
on it now i have dos/win3.11 and slackware. i have pcmcia networking
working with my intel extherexpress pro 16 bit (redhats web page says it's
supported) in dos and win but i can't get it to work in slackware using
the defacto pcmcia utils.
the redhat install crashes right after i put in the supp. disk and it says
starting pcmcia services or support or something simlar. it freezes the
screen and locks keybaord (a hard reboot is needed)

if anyone can help me please Email me asap.
if more info is needed i'd be more then happy to supply it.
thanks

There's a binary patch somewhere that you have to apply. Sorry I
can't be more specific, I think its in the kernel release notes.

I found something neat. I think they are Cubix (Cubicks?) cards. each card is
basically 2 computers, each with a 486/33MHz processor, serial port connection,
RAM slot (72pin), and parallel connectoin. One card has all the above, plus a
hdd connection (not IDE, but it has to be hdd), a few other slots, and 2
network/modem type connectors and 2 serial plugs. If you guys have any ideas
how to use these with Linux, let me know. It would rock, making a 14 486/33
processor system.

Thanks.

You've forgotten and important step--adding to the route table:

route add -host x.x.x.x dev eth0:0

and so on. You'll be able to talk to the outside world, then. :-)

Subject: Kernel 2.2 and 3Com 3c900 NICs
Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 20:42:55 -0500

I use RedHat 5.2 (and this is actually a fresh install...). Under
original 5.2, my network card worked fine. It's the 3c900 (Boomerang)
card by 3Com. The network I am on requires us to connect with DHCP.

However, now that I have 2.2 installed on my system (I kept a 2.0...
backup if something like this went wrong, that's why I can post this), the
network card does not work under it.

I looked through all the configuration settings and checked the options
for the 3c900 Vortex/Boomerang NICs. Everything compiles fine, and it
even boots ok. But when the kernel gets to connecting to the network via
DHCP, it can't do it -- "failed" is the response. if I restart and boot
2.0.36-7, it works fine.

Any reason why this should happen? Are the drivers on the
cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html page any different from
those native to the kernel??

Also, it would greatly help if you would mail me at my address below since
I don't check this group that often. Thanks a lot in advance.

Switch to the man directory, type "man man". This will tell you how to set up

Since I'm upset at HP's attitude about not releasing programming information
for the PhotoSmart scanner, I decided I would look elsewhere for a color
ink jet.

Epson directly supports lpd spooling to its printers with their Ethernet
card. That and the nice (at least to my eyes) print quality of their
1440x720 printers, led me to their 850Ne. It is rated at up to 9 ppm black,
and 7 ppm color. The Ethernet card will support AppleTalk, Netware, TCP
and Windows* protocols simultaneously. It was very easy to configure.

The one thing I really like about the HPs is their paper handling. When
the page comes out it rests on two rails and then these rais open and the
page drops to a tray. This way each page stays up while it prints, far
from the drying pages. Also, all printed pages are kept in this tray.
Pity other manufacturers have not copied the idea. I think that Epsons,
Cannons, et al. just spit the page out, and eventually they fall on the
table, floor, etc...

 I only have experience in using HP-DAT drives (DDS-3 24GB HW-compressed)
(SureStore) and Sony DAT drives.
I think they do not differ much altough the HP DAT is delivered with more
SW (for WinTel clients).

If you need more speed and higher capacities in you backup perhaps try the
HP DLT (SureStore) or the
DLT library...

Hi there!

Well, here's what I would do if I were in your boat. You said all your
partitions were ~2G, and you wanted ~3G for Windows, and the rest for
Linux, right? Take your favorite partioning software, and delete D E
and F, leaving C alone. Slap another 1G primary behind it, to complete
your windows space. For some reasone the thought occured that swap
partitions have to be primary as well(someone please correct me if I'm
wrong), so use the third primary slot for your swap(256M should be good
for 128 of memory). Then place an extended partition in the last slot,
and tack on logical partitions as you need them.

I'm trying to get my 3C509 card working with Linux RH 5.2.

I started Linuxconf, and I can see that it found the module name (3c509),
for eth0. I gave it an IP address via linuxconf as well, and made sure the
adapter was enabled.

When I run ifconfig -a I can't see anything but 'lo', which I think is just
the loopback.

Must I do something special to the kernel so it detects my card? I just
upgraded to 5.2, and I already had a few surprises, like I no longer have
ppp in my kernel, but I had it in my 5.1 version...

How can I get the kernel to detect my card?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Subject: Want optical jukebox support for Linux? Read this.
Date: 4 Feb 1999 20:49:35 -0500

A few times a month I've been seeing posts from people asking if there
is optical jukebox support in Linux and the answer always seems to be
"Not really." Well, now may be your chance to get it.

Recently, I got to spend a few days with a couple of engineers from
Kofax, the company that makes "Ascent Storage." It's a pretty impressive
product: it makes an optical jukebox look like one huge disk drive. All
optical platter management is handled transparently. All the operator
needs to do is add a new platter whenever the jukebox runs out of blank
ones.

The problem is, they only support Windows NT, right now. However, when I
discussed Linux with them, they said they had a few developers who hate
NT and would love to port Ascent to Linux. The only thing they need is
the go-ahead from management. Obviously, for that to happen, management
needs to believe it would be worth their while.

So, if you are serious about optical jukebox support for Linux, I would
recommend you send Email to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and tell them you want a
Linux port. Make sure you mention "Ascent Storage", since there is also
"Ascent Capture", a high-volume hardware/software solution for scanning
documents.

Since the volume in comp.os.linux.hardware is so high, I'll post this
message a few more times over the next few weeks, so everyone gets a
chance to see it.

Thanks,
Chris Ott

I already been there, but didn't found the answer for my two questions:
1) from the mechanical point of view, how reliable is the Stylus?
2) what does it mean "Stylus B/W printing result not as good as the HP one"?

I intend to print in B/W most of the time, therefore the color quality is in
my case less important. And being scared of the really poor HP697 mechanical
quality (and it's so slooow!), I'd like to know if the Epson does have such
problems as feeding multiple pages at once.
