Neither are model 70s.

BTW, is there a version of Linux that will run on a 286 processor?
I've salvaged several PS/2 that had been thrown away- I work with the
mentally retarded, and plan on giving away some of these machines to
the ones who live in supported apartments. These guys could never
afford to buy their own machines, much less pay for MicroSoak OS
licenses- and with State inspectors coming around periodically, it
would be indiscrete to load them up with bootlegged software- and I
would have a MUCH easier time writing simple & age-appropriate
teaching software under Linux, if my understanding of programming ever
gets that far . . .

I am trying to get a hard disk to boot that has never booted an OS
before. LILO is no use, even though it writes an MBR -- apparently,
it requires the presence of a DOS MBR first in order to work
correctly! No matter what I do with linux all I get is "PRESS ANY KEY
TO REBOOT" when trying to boot the new disk.

Can anybody verify this?

My last runin with this problem was solved only by trashing a complete
linux install, deleting all partitions, run DOS FDISK /MBR
repartition and reinstall. Not exactly how things are supposed to
work! especially the need to use a DOS utility to install linux is
annoying.

Can anybody think of a more elegant solution?

Please respond by email, I will post a summary.

TIA

jon.

Date: 05 Feb 1999 11:40:09 +0000

Hi,

I have upgraded the BIOS on a TYAN TAHOE II (FX440) with
2x PII266

- 1 9GB SEAGATE SCSI
- 2x IDE (Channel 1 as master-slave)

Now I upgraded the BIOS because it would not detect large >8.4GB drives.
It does that properly now. Linux is fine with the drives as well.

Adding one IDE disk (long time ago) meant that I had to boot lilo and have
lilo pick up the SCSI disk. This was fine.

The second IDE drive (last week) killed this boot setup, but I think that
is because the SCSI disk becomes the third disk in the system.

The problem occured after I upgraded the BIOS:

Although all disks now contain a LILO boot sector (/dev/sda /dev/hda &
/dev/hdb) these are never found by the BIOS! This is strange.

Anyone have problems like this with this board ?

GJ.

What have you done to the disk so far, and how did you do it?

Is this the only disk in the system? SCSI or IDE/EIDE?

Primary or Secondary IDE controller?

My guess is that the LILO boot record was written to the start
of the partition (hda1) not the start of the drive (hda) AND
that the partition is not marked as bootable.

This will leave the M$ boot code on the main MBR, which looks
for a bootable partition to load the boos sectors from.

Trouble Starting X with correct resolution

I am very new to Linux so please bear with my ignorance and newbie
questions. The Redhat 5.1 installation from Que seemed clean and
straightforward. I gave up on the installation automatically selecting my
actual components (as I get a locked black screen):
Actual Components:
PS2 (MS IntelliMouse)
DEC Compatible NIC
Optiquest V95 monitor
STB Velocity 128

Question: Is the black screen considered a virtual terminal?

Several from the newsgroups suggested that I use xf86config to set up X so I
did.
? If I go through and pick all generic devices, X will start but at a
unbearable 320 x 320 resolution.
? If I go through and pick 800x600 and the STB Velocity etc I still get
the unbearable resolution
? Sometimes if I pick some various combinations of resolution and Video , x
will lock. When I say pick various combinations, they are combinations of
generic drivers and settings that the monitor can actually handle.

Question: Is there a quick and easy Windoze way of changing resolution in
X?

Suggestions ?

Thank you for your time
Quinn

Subject: [HELP] PS/2 Mouse only moves along the vertical axis
Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 09:24:28 -0500

Hi,

I recently installed Linux (RedHat 5.1). Although I ran into a few obstacles
(configuring PPP and setting up XFree86), I managed to overcome these
hurdles after a careful read of the recent posts and the FAQ. Thank you to
all those who have contributed in the past.

I have a generic PS/2 mouse (Today's Mouse) connected to my machine. Under
both X Windows and gpm, the mouse will only move in the vertical direction.
Since the problem occurs under gpm as well, I don't think it's X Windows
related. Under gpm, I use the setting gpm -t ps2. When I test with mev, only
the y-axis changes while the x-axis does not. Has anyone seen this problem
before? Can you provide me with some pointers as to where to look?

This is a new mouse that I have just purchased. I have not yet been able to
determine whether this is a hardware problem as most of the mice in my
office are serial mice rather than PS/2 mice.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Re: Looking for cheap modem....

I bought the best data 56SF modem for use with Linux (my IBM aptiva E3U came
with a winmodem) and I ended up taking it back. Here's the reason why:
before I even attempted to set it up in Linux (I'm sure it would have
worked-- it's a non PNP, non PCI, non winmodem) I installed it along side
the LT winmodem and connected to my ISP from windows with both modems. The
LT winmodem connected at 53333 EVERY single time, and the Best Data modem
never connected faster than 33000, and usually slower than that. I switched
the com ports and irqs, I switched the slots, basically tried everything.
Everything I read about connection speed said that if a 56 K modem doesn't
connect at full speed it's due to line noise. The line noise can be
anywhere including in the modem itself. Since all conditions were identical
for the two modems, I concluded the Best Data 56SF was an inferior piece of
hardware, which is not surprising, because it was cheap (around $60). Now I
am hunting for a high quality Linux compatible modem.

Subject: SounBlaster PCI128
Date: Fri, 05 Feb 1999 13:25:21 +0000

Hello!!

I have this problem with my Soundblaster PCI128.
I can't get it to work with Linux. :-(

I'm running Debian 2.0(kernel 2.0.34) on a PII 450.
[Linux zaphod 2.0.34 #3 Fri Jan 29 12:18:00 MET 1999 i686 unknown]

I have also installed alsa-driver-0.3.0-pre3, alsa-lib-0.3.0pre3
and alsa-utils-0.3.0-pre3, which I heard have support for SB PCI128.

How can I get the right devices to work (/dev/*)?
After installing 'alsa', I ran the script ./snddevices to create
the right devices and symbolic links.

To load the drivers into the kernel I used modprobe.
# modprobe snd-audiopci

And then I set everything in the alsa-mixer to max.

>Master M 100% ( 0.00dB) : 100% ( 0.00dB)
>PCM 100% ( 12.00dB) : 100% ( 12.00dB)
>PCM 1 100% ( 12.00dB) : 100% ( 12.00dB)
>Line-In 100% ( 12.00dB) : 100% ( 12.00dB)
>MIC 100% ( 12.00dB) : 100% ( 12.00dB)
>CD 100% ( 12.00dB) : 100% ( 12.00dB)
>Mono 1 100% ( 12.00dB) : 100% ( 12.00dB)
>Mono 2 100% ( 12.00dB) : 100% ( 12.00dB)
>Aux A 100% ( 12.00dB) : 100% ( 12.00dB)

This all by the book and I get no error messages.
So now everything should be working, but not!!!

When I klick on play in x11amp I get:
>Unable to open the audio device
>Unable to reset audio device

When I run mpg123 I get:
> Can't open /dev/dsp!

I can use aplay(alsa-utils) for playing of wav-files.
>root@zaphod:~/usr/bin# aplay ding.wav
>Aplay: version 0.3.0-pre3 by Jaroslav Kysela <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
>Playing raw data 'ding.wav' : Unsigned 8-bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
>write error

The strange thing is that 'write error' only shows when I use
wav-files, but if I e.g. use a text-file I get no 'write error'.
Anyway I get sound from the speakers. :-)

The INSTALL-file for the alsa-drivers says the following:

| Module snd-audiopci.o
| ---------------------
|
| Module for Ensoniq AudioPCI ES1370/1371 PCI soundcards.
| * SoundBlaster PCI 64
| * SoundBlaster PCI 128
|
| snd_dac1_frame_size - max dac1 (playback1) frame size in kB
(4-128kB)
| snd_dac2_frame_size - max dac2 (playback2) frame size in kB
(4-128kB)
| snd_adc_frame_size - max adc (record) frame size in kB (4-128kB)
|
| Module supports up to 8 cards and autoprobe.

How to use this information I don't know. :-(

In the documentation I read I can't find any special settings
for the compile of the kernel. The only info I find is:
| Driver can be compiled only under 2.0.X kernels and under 2.1.127+
kernels.

I would be very greatful if anyone could solve my problem.

PS: Sorry for my bad English.
As we use to say i Sweden. The ball is round.
