Subject: fips error message
Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 06:19:39 GMT
Hello
I've been attempting a nondestructive partition of my hard drive w/
fips. It is running windows 98. First I defragged the drive. Then I
ran fips. The partitioning fails because fips says that there is a
hidden file like "image.imx" or a file ending in *.fil in the last
cylinder of the drive that will be the windows partition. It says to go
into the root directory on DOS and delete these hidden files. I have no
idea how to go to the last cylinder of a hard drive, so I just opened
windows and removed any files *.imx or *.fil. I defragged again as
well. This does not work.
So, is there any solution? If not, what else is out there that will
(hopefully free) accomplish the same thing as fips?
If there is no other way round, should I do a backup of my system and
then destructive reformat of my hard drive, plop the backup into the
new, smaller partition for windows, and then linux in the remainder?
Will that work out?
Feedback is appreciated!!

Whether I'm in login screen, KDE, or GNOME, the keyboard seems to
occasionally enter a ` character for no apparent reason. I'm running
windows on a separate partition and I don't get this problem in it.

The real problem -- and it will become more apparent as the years go
by -- is the attempt by capitalist corporations to invade and colonize
the CopyLeft/ GNU Public License/ 'Free Software'[sic] phenomenon, in
an attempt to control it for gain, as they do in every other area of
economic activity. It's about (potential, here) money.
Of course, the *essence* of Linux is to be FREE...
I'm sure that many in the Linux movement understand this -- and are
prepared to thwart these plans, by keeping Linux essentially free of
corporate manipulations. After all, it's corporate monopolies which
are responsible for the twisting of public standards, and for the
secrecy which hobbles our use of so much software/hardware.
And it never ceases to amaze me how so many people do not understand
the true reason for Microsoft (and Bill Gates') success: the need for
a WORLD STANDARD OS.
Windoze is NOT good -- it has simply been the OS the 'world'
standardized on (along with Intel hardware, etc.). Time marches on,
technology -- and standards -- change. And now we thankfully have
LINUX (and 'AMD'; and now 'Transmeta'... hardware is so much harder,
isn't it? :).
The fact that we NOW have an alternative (and FREE at that!), is why
people are today coming out of the woodwork to say publicly that *the
Emperor has no clothes*.
The Emperor is _dead_. Long live Linux!!

Ugh! The command is case-sensitive. 0xA800 does not equate to
0xa800. )&*!#)*(()* Simply changing all my uppercase hex-values to lower
case did the trick.
That truly sucks.

150 megs of HD is not enough. 500 megs is a comfortable size, 1 gig is
more than plenty.
I would encourage you to donate your powerbook to one of the
Linux/Mac68k developers if you have no urgent need for it, as none of us
have a 5x0 powerbook to hack on, thus the somewhat lackluster support.

I tried to increase PROC_CHANGE_PENALTY in include/asm-i386/smp.h
from 15 to 45 (2.2.15 rh6.2b kernel) w/o noticeable difference.
I was not able to compile 2.0.38 on RH6.1 system - it fails on 'make dep'.
I tried 2.3.18 and it _DID_ reduce the system time for my little
benchmark to almost 0. BUT it _DID_ increase the user time by approx. 30%!
Matlab benchmark:
Computer Loops LU Sparse
LX m/b (333 MHz) 0.92 0.72 0.81
BX m/b (333 MHz) 0.62 0.70 0.62
Here is an excerpts from bench.m:
% Loops For loops and "zeros". Strings and "malloc".
% LU MATLAB's "LINPACK". Primarily floating point.
% Sparse Solve sparse system. Mixed integer and floating point.
Which suggests that memory allocation with 2.3.18 is slow.
Sincerely,
Dmitri.

I'm running RH6, and keep getting the message "parport0: detected irq 7;
use procfs to enable interrupt-driven operation." I've tried several
things, and have even succeeded in making the problem temporarily
disappear, but when I reboot, the problem returns.
How do I get rid of this once and for all? I have looked for a way to
do this in the Control Panel, but can't find anything. Any help would

Bus Logic (Mylex) has excellent Linux support. I suggest you buy a new SCSI cable
for the scanner with a HD50 pin connector so you don't have to buy a cheesy card
with the DB25 connector on the back.

Subject: ultra 66 promise controller only sees 8 gig
Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 08:30:05 GMT
All right. This is really upsetting me now.
I have a Maxtor 40 gig 904096u8 hard drive. I am running an Asus p55t2p4
mobo (socket 7, HX chipset). This motherboard has a 32gig limit.
I bought a promise ultra66 controller card, thinking this will solve my
problem. Needless to say it did not. The kernel sees the drive, but
thinks it's 8 gig. The kernel knows what type of drive it is, but not the
correct size.
I have tried these things:
I passed the kernel the settings it wanted to see the drive
(ide2=0xe000,0xd802) as it shows in the how to.
I installed the hedrick patches for kernel 2.2.13. Again I had drive
visiblity (without passing the kernel anything) and again only 8 gigs.
I upgraded the Promise controller bios.
I upgraded LILO to the latest version.
I tried the 2.2.14 patches with the 2.2.14 kernel. I couldn't get the
machine to boot. No dice here.
I attached my 20 gig drive to it, and it seen 20 gig.
I tried passing the kernel this: "hde = 4978,255,63". Still 8 gigs.
Anyone know anything about this?
Thanks

LOL. (And I'm not laughing at you.)
Isn't that the way it goes! I'm running Red Hat 3.03 on about a 10% duty
cycle. I have a big disk set from SuSE with newer stuff, and all I do is read
the manual and think it's cool in theory. (I am such a pathetic Wordpad.exe
junkie that I do a whole Rube Goldberg trick while programmng in C for Linux.)
To cram Linux in the first time, I tried to put fips to work. fips was fine.
My partition was not. Defrag.exe told me about the stubborn cluster, and it
told me (relatively) where it was. Did it do anything about it? Hell no. So
there I was, anxious to put the stuff in, allowed only about 90 MB above some
dumb chunk that wouldn't fall in line for a defrag.
Then I lost my cool. I booted from DOS 6.22, fired up the old DEFRAG.EXE, and
"solved" the problem in a coupla minutes.
I rebooted to Windoze, and beheld a worldoutthere that looked like WORLDO~1.
Everything, dudes and dudettes! It was all trashed. Automating as much as I
could, I had to repair about 17000 filenames, inside and outside the System
Registry.
The moral of the story? There is none. It's too darned specific. 20/20
hindsight tells me that I should have built a simple database with
DIR /S >> READY4TROUBLE.TXT
with a little manipulation after that, given the handily aligned columns in the
text file.
Did I? Nope. Of course not!
It took you 1.5 seconds to solve what troubled you for weeks. The trick
(always the same) is to spend that 1.5 seconds before the weeks.
Years go by. I buy a 8.4 gig hard drive. I shuffle everything but everything
around, scared of my own shadow. I install Red Hat Linux 3.03 again with all
the bells and whistles (by those ancient standards). What do I get?
Flawless installation.
No problem.
Fear is a good thing.
But, then again, while yous guys are out there, fiddling around in the real IP
space, I worriedly go back to a stupid "Are you sure you want to stay online?
By the way, for only $39.95 you can have the latest greeting card software with
free online technical support if you just click here." every time I actually
want to read something that I load with Netscape, which isn't entirely friendly
with my "ISP" at the UI, even after the merger.
If it ain't (entirely) broke, ...
Naw. I won't go that far.
But whenever anyone just WANTS TO SCREAM!!!
So do I but with different details and a little knowing grin. Next time it
will happen to me. There but by the grace of GNU go I.
Sorry for wasting the bandwidth, but a little group therapy is good for the
bleeding edge sometimes.

Read again. IF it is a SCSI card at all, he'll most probably have
to specify I/O address and IRQ settings, not to mention loading
the correct driver module for it. The SCSI cards that shipped with
tape drives usually were BIOSless cards.
Note: This 150MB drive is possibly not a SCSI drive at all.
If it's older than just 4 - 5 years, then it's perhaps a QIC-02
tape drive with a proprietary adapter card that looks just like
an 8-bit SCSI controller (using a 50-pin cable), but needs specific
driver support. Without further information about the kind of controller
card used, it's probably not possible to give detailed instructions
at this time.

I have two internal Iomega Zips installed, one in my home computer

Red Hat Linux 6.1.
Everything goes fine at work (System 6.1) but everytime I write a file

few lines
of the file are modified with strange characters). There is no way I can
transport
data from my home computer to my office one, the original pur`pose of
the ZIP
installation.
I have replaced the Zip unit at home with no improvement, I have checked
with
either plain ASCII or binary files, no difference. I have formatted the
zip disk
aither as a vfat or as an ext2 or msdos file system with ni improvement.
Has anyone had a similar problem, and if so any word of hope ? I am
feeling absolutely blue about this now. Thanks,
