Subject: Help! RH 5.2 Install not recognise ST9145AG partition
Date: Sat, 06 Feb 1999 01:22:09 GMT

I am trying to install RH 5.2 on a notebook - 486DX-33 8MB RAM 122MB
ST9145AG HD.
When booted off the floppy (no CDROM) initially the drive is reported
correctly:
hda: ST9145AG w/64kb cache, CHS 980/15/17
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7, irq14
Then comes the partition check and it's downhill al the way.

It gives 4 blocks of:
hda: Status Error: Status=0x01 {Error}
hda: Status Error: Status=0x04 {DriveStatusError}
hda: Drive not ready for command

followed by:
ide0: reset: Success
hda1 hda2 <hda5 hda6 >

This last after booting a Win98 (from a new machine) Partition Magic
Rescue disk and setting:
Primary Partition 1 5MB ext2 - intended to be /root
Extended partition 2
Logical 100MB ext2 - intended as /
Logical 16MB Linux Swap

Originally I had a single partition under Win95a but the output from
install gave the same error messages.

>From the Linux documentation the 4 blocks are followed by a
recalibrate - giving the reset: success.

Laptops are specifically not supported by RedHat so there is no help
to be had there.

I have used Seagates software to confirm that the drive is a ST9145AG
it is 145 unformatted : From Seagate

The BIOS is set for User type 47 :C/H/S 980/15/17

The computer, a Cardstar, is unusual in having an ISA slot.

The intended use is as a proxy server using IP masqerade.

Sadly I have had no problem with any MS OS and it is now happily
running our other 3 computers on a 10Base2 (ISA EN2000 clone NIC) LAN
with a TDK PCMCIA modem and Wingate 3.0 under Win95a.

I don't have the knowledge to know if this is an irq13 problem with
the initial BIOS call or some irq14 problem with the drive itself.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Had the same problem...

According to a mini-faq I found @ linux.org, Linux probably doesn't like the
plug-and-play features of your card. Get the setup program, if you don't have
it already, and disable the plug-and-play. Linux should be able to recognize
the device. However, Windows may need to install ISA drivers for your card
after you boot into Windows the first time after that. After this, Windows
and Linux should be able to use the Ethernet card in harmony.

I have not had any luck with the RedHat boot disks identifying PCMCIA
devices on the hand-full of laptops that I've installed (including my
OB800). If you haven't done any networking setup with your tower, I'd
strongly recommend getting the SCSI-to-Docking cable (P/N: F1182-80001
$49.00) and installing from an external SCSI CD-ROM or disk. Even if
you do get the network install to work, the cable is well worth the
money if you ever plan attaching any SCSI devices.

Andrew;

Xfree 3.3.3 is a fantastic inmprovement over the previous version. The
G200 is supported well and runs very smoothly. The relese also corrects
many bugs for other chipsets. This is an upgrade I could reccomend to
anyone.

Subject: Any word on Tyan Thunder 100 MB?
Date: Thu, 04 Feb 1999 18:29:46 -0600

I'm looking to put together a linux box, but I am having a very
difficult time determining linux compatibility for different components.

I've been eyeing the Tyan S1836DLUAN Thunder 100 motherboard. Here are
the relevant specs:

Intel 440GX AGP chipset (this is ostensibly compatible with the BX
chipset, I think.)

Creative Vibra 16XV Audio (integrated)

Dual Channel UW SCSI (AIC-7895 -- this is an Adaptec chip, but that's
about all I know about it. Its also integrated.)

Intel 82558 10/100 Ethernet (integrated.)

So the question is (for those of you who are patient enough to still be
with me) are these of any use in a Linux environment?

Also, are there any relavent resources on the web? I checked out linux
hardware net, but its not been around long enough to have much
information.

Thanks.

I recently purchased an AOPEN AX59 PRO with 1MB cache, and an AMD K62-350
this after my old board and processor completely died. I never formated the
drives, just put them onto the new board, booted up and froze. I worked with
it for a while, finally found out it was freezing as soon as it tried to hit
the swap partition. what I did to fix the problem was to recreate the swap
space let linux reformat the swap partition, and now have had no problems
whatsoever with my setup. runs fine at 100MHZ bus speed. I have not tried
112MHZ yet... but this had me baffled for almost 2 weeks. don't know if this
has any bearing on the problems you are experiencing, but I know that an AMD
system can be successfully built and used... (originally was an AMD k6 233 on
a Gigabyte HX2 board)

Hi,

I bought an Umax Astra 1220S scanner (1200x600 dpi phys. opt.
resolution) which was
bundled with much SW (OCR, Image, etc.) and TWAIN drivers for Win95,
Win98 and WinNT.

It also has an own SE-SCSI-controller (UDS-IS11) which only supports
the scanner.
The Scanner is connected to it (and terminated properly)
Under Win95, NT: no problems to see the scanner in OS and to scan.

My problem: ISA-SCSI card (UDS-IS11) is not detected by my linux 2.0.35
(S.u.S.E 5.3) box.
Any Ideas are welcome.

I have installed also a Buslogic LT SCSI controller which deals with the
disks, CD-ROM, CD-RW
and sometimes with the DAT.
I do not want to connect the scanner to the "main" card (as the astra
scanner is said to lock
the bus for some seconds when it accesses it first)

Thanks in advance,

Carsten.

Nothing to do with laptops, but I've recently solved the MSTurd97[TM]

Subject: SB16Vibra PnP + 2.2.1 Kernel Solution
Date: Fri, 05 Feb 1999 19:48:54 GMT

I figured this out. ISAPNPTOOLS was setting my SoundCard up just fine. It
was the modprobe util that had the problem, even though I updated it. The
sb.o module used to have the options "io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1,5" in
/etc/conf.modules. For some reason, the new sb.o won't take that so you need
to manually change this to "io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5". This breaks the
sndconfig program and anything else that might configure the sound module.
You should be able to insert your own settings if they're different.

Known issue.

Newer AHA-2920s, 2930s and 2940s are very tempermental under Linux. The
linux driver dates back to the first revisions of said controllers.

Apparently, if you have a fast processor (something in the range of 200+
Mhz), the controller can't handle all of the I/O operations.

The best remedy is to access the SCSI controller's BIOS and set the Enable
Disconnect option to NO for all of the supported SCSI ids.

Result: I/O operations are not as fast, but the server won't crap out under
heavy I/O activity.

Make sure you have /usr/sbin in your path (that's where chat is). I'm
using ppp-on script to connect to isp, and used to have the same
problem.
Then I just changed the chat line in ppp-on-dialer to /usr/sbin/chat,
and now it works fine.
