It should work.

Hi All
I have just taken the step of fragging my system and installing Linux.
This part has been fairly <g> painless (i am a poor little lamb who has lost
his way...) except when it comes to installing my modem.

I just purchased a Dynalink modem model DL 1456VQH-T2, the PCI internal one.

I have downloaded the recommended file
(http://www.dynalink.co.nz/support/drivers/1456vqh-t2_linux.zip) but seem to
get an error message when I run the install script.

I am running REDHAT Linux v6.2 kernel 2.2.14-12 The message i get is that
the module was compiled for a different version.(an earlier one) Can some
kind soul tell me how to update this or if there are some instructions on
how to change the kernel? I am fairly new to Linux so please bear with me.

thanks

From: David Steuber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I noticed the other day when moving a few GB of files from one
computer to another that when the disk light goes on, the network
traffic halts. Once the disk light goes off, the network traffic
resumes again. This seems to defeat the whole purpose of having a
100bt ethernet network.

My first thought was that the interrupt for the IDE drive was taking
up all the CPU time so that the NIC couldn't be serviced. But a
friend of mine told me that Windows does not have this problem so long
as DMA is enabled.

In `make menuconfig' there is a `Use DMA by default when available'
option under `block devices'. I've got it turned on. Is there
something else I have to do, or are IDE drives just fundamentally
screwed up this way. I hate the idea of disk access bringing other io
and perhaps even the CPU to a halt. I can't afford to install the
equivalent amount of SCSI disk.

Any hints on how I can optimize machine performance? This box will be
an HTTP server that also uses PostgreSQL (until I can get a seperate
box for the SQL server) and mod_perl/HTML::Embperl.

ie should I increase or decrease the bdflush interval from the default
of five seconds?

Try this:
modprobe sound dmabuf=1
modprobe cs4232 irq=5 io=0x534 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=15
modprobe opl3 io=0x388

You may have to fiddle with the io= parameter on the cs4232 module.
SuSE 6.4 has all those things already set in /etc/conf.modules ; just
remove the # signs from lines 111-114 of that file and you will probably
be good to go.

if it's the second ethernet card, it's probably called eth1, as the primary is
called eth0.

at any rate, there's something else going on here, as well..... IRQ/DMA/port
conflict, or some other problem with the card. If it's PnP, you should try to
disable it and manually set the settings.

How about posting the results of 'cat /proc/interrupts' and 'cat /proc/pci' as
well as the relevant dmesg output, so maybe we can make some sort of intelligent
response.

Date: Sun, 06 Aug 2000 15:14:27 GMT

I have installed a SMC 8216 nic card as a second card in
my PC (goes to my cable modem). I have run the DOS utilities
and show the setup of the card as irq 3, io 0x300, mem 0xD800 - 0xDBFF.
Under Windows these parameters work fine.
With Linux (2.2.14 kernel) the card appears to load O.K. with
the drivers loaded into the kernel or as a module. The above
mentioned parameters are returned by the driver when loaded.
Problem is when I do an ifconfig it shows the card as having
io address 0x330 instead of 0x300. Although I can ping the
card's IP address, it does not send or recieve any traffic.

Any ideas on why the i/o address change?
Thanks in advance.

Those companies, which offers all Linux support, break their press-released

As long as you get a serial port external instead of USB, any newer

I agree. I did send them a note on the subject, but have seen no action
on it. Perhaps if more people would ask them to remove it. I find
SuperMicro a strange mix, with some people extremely dedicated and
willing to go the extra mile to help. But then when getting to the linux
side, it just drops out without any willingness to even talk about it. I
was told that they recently lost their product manager, and all of his
work was dumped on everyone else, so this may be the reason for the cold
shoulder. In any case, I won't be shopping at SuperMicro anymore, at
least not for motherboards (so ends a generation of purchasing).

I don't know if this is fixable, but I doubt a BIOS flash would cover
it. Possibly it is related to the manner in which the APICs are
connected, but I don't know. So yes, likely this is a hardwire
situation. Check out, in the kernel source Documentation subdirectory,
file IO-APIC.txt. I mentioned the problem to Alan Cox, but haven't heard
of any solutions yet, aside from running with noapic kernel option. If I
knew who "mingo" is from the IO-APIC.txt file, I'd ask him as well. I'm
currently looking at Iwill's DCA200, but it would require dumping
current ram for rdram, and dumping both cpu's for xeon's, along with
purchasing a separate scsi controller...which is a bit expensive.
Initial response from Iwill is that so far as they know, there is no
APIC problem with their board on linux, but they are checking to make
sure (no reply back yet). What is unclear is how many i840 boards are
connected in this manner, ending up with "unexpected IO-APIC".

4) Use a mini-distribution on the 386, instead of a full blown
        one. Look here for options:

        http://freshmeat.net/appindex/console/mini%20distributions.html

NOTE: You'll really have to work at it, to strip down the RedHat install
to fit on the small drive in the 386. Given what you want to do with
the 386, the simplest option would probably be to use one of the many
mini-distributions available.

: I want to try and see if I can set up some kind of remote terminal
: thingy with a serial cable - I have some info on getting a getty
: process running on my host system (400mHz Celeron with 256 megs of
: RAM). Or would I do better to leave DOS installed on the 386 and run
: some kinda terminal emulator thingy? Any URL's for such DOS programs?

Under DOS you could use kermit:

        http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/mskermit.html

If you want to network, which might be easier and faster, there's NCSA
Telnet for DOS:

Linux definitely knows it's there - this is from dmesg:
"hdc: Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer Plus 8000, ATAPI CDROM drive"

However I've also seen this at startup:
"ide_setup: hdc=ide-scsi"
- Does this mean anything?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Subject: JetDirect 170X and Red hat 6.2
Date: Sun, 06 Aug 2000 18:06:25 GMT

Can anyone tell me if this possible ?

I have Windows 98, Windows NT and Red Hat 6.2 on one computer and
Win98 on another. They use a cable modem connected to a hub to access
the internet and have IP addresses assigned by DHCP. I also have an
HP Jet Direct 170X print server connected to the hub. The printer is
an HP 660C.

Both Win98 and NT print fine using the Jet Admin software that came
with the print server. I can't get linux to print, though. I
downloaded HP's Web Jet Admin for NT and found out that the print
server has the default IP address of 192.0.0.192 (which, of course, is
completely different from the IP addresses assigned to the two
computers by my ISP). I could change the IP address with Web Jet
Admin but I don't know what I would change it to.

Win 98 and NT are using IPX\SPX to print.

I know the print server has two built-in queues named "text" and "raw"
(according to some websites I've visited). But when I try setting it
up with printtool or even typing it into printcap using the settings I
got from various websites, nothing prints.

Do I just have to accept that it won't work with linux ?
