Before you do, you should be aware that SuSE comes in RPM format as well,

Subject: 100MBit Ethernet
Date: Fri, 05 Feb 1999 16:39:35 GMT
Hi There !
I've got two linux boxes connected with two identical 100Mbit PCI Adapters
(probed successfully by the tulip-driver) connected with a cat5 crossover
cable.
Box I : Asus PT54SP3-Board, 90Mhz Pentium, 32MB RAM, PCI ISDN Card
Box II : PC-Chips M590, K6-2 300Mhz, 66Mhz external clock, 64MB RAM, A 2940UW
When I boot both machines at nearly the same time, the network comes up fine.
But when I shutdown/reboot Box II. the network doesn't come up again. The
network detection-LED doesn't light up at boot time, but the Card is probed
correctly. I can't get any IP-Connection. After shutting down both machines
and powering them off and on, it works again. Well I want to run Box I.
permanently and switch Box II. on only when I need it without rebooting Box
I. :)
Is it a problem caused by using an X-Over-Cable ?
Thanks a lot
Eric

I have a very peculiar problem with some of the HP Netservers when
running Linux.
The problem is extremely difficult to reproduce. It seems that it occurs
randomly, in that the system will crash and display the following error
on the console.
Aiee, interrupt error... killing interrupt handler.
I suspect is it a hardware component. All of the hardware is standard to
the E50.
Basically, a...

I have heard of someone who ran loadlin similar to you (boot into win, then
restart in dos mode) and it wouldn't work. It did work, however, if they didn't
boot into win first - do a cold boot, and when it says starting windows 9x, hist
the F8 key, and choose "Command Prompt Only", or even better (probably more
likely to work:): "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only." The latter will totally skip
loading any piece of M$ software that's not necesary to give you a prompt. Then
try your loadlin...linux shouldn't have trouble throwing out M$ then..
Other possibility: Make sure your kernel supports: FAT, FAT32 (VFAT), and
UMSDOS. All three.
Worst case scenario: boot disk. Or chop your partition, and lilo...

I have RH 5.2, and I have HP LJ 5M connected to my box via a parallel
cable. I experience the following problem
I send a large number (say, 30) of small jobs to the printer. I see
the jobs piling up in the queue. The printer starts printing, but it
stops after twenty or so, says "Processing job", but does not happen
anything---even after a day. The last ten jobs disappear from the
queue.
A typical (though useless) example would be this:
Create the script. prtest.sh
#!/bin/sh
i=1
while [ $i -le 30 ]; do
dvips $1
i=$[ i + 1 ]
done
create and latex a simple latex file prtest.tex
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
Hello, printer
\end{document}
and run
./prtest prtest
(The actual situation does make sense, but the above example shows the
problem).
My other printer, an Okidata 810eps did not show he problem---after it
was warmed up. But if I sent the jobs after the printer was idle for
say one hour---it started printing garbage.
I also tried to use the HP 5M as a network printer, but after printing
5 of the jobs, it started printing garbage.
I called HP, and of course they told me the problem is with Linux, and
they have to make a driver.
Here is my /etc/printcap (created by RH's printtool)

Hi. You can successfully use RPM to install packages that have had their
names mangled. Messages generated by RPM when trying to install usually mean
that you're lacking a required library or that the package that your trying to
install conflicts with one that you already have installed. If you're trying
to upgrade an existing package, use "rpm -Uvh" to upgrade.
It is possible to force RPM to ignore the messages and install the conflicting
package anyway, however this is NEVER usually a good idea.
As an aside, if your hda1 contains win95, try mounting it as vfat instead of
MS-DOS to stop the names being mangled to 8.3 format.
Cheers,
Brendan

Did you remember to add the directory containing your dynamically linked
X libraries to /etc/ld.so.conf and re-run ldconfig? I forgot this and
wasted a lot of time...

Good question. It really depends on why you want to use Linux.
Some of us chose to use it because of the learning experience, and it

Got the same board: (different chips 2x200MHz 512K PPros)
Built and ran 2.0.36 SMP and 2.1.129 SMP kernels... ran fine (especially
the 2.1.129). One issue I had was I have a BT958 SCSI controller and the
machine would run like a snail when I compiled the SCSI support as a
module so I had to compile it in. I would assume you are using SCSI on
your machine.... if not the SCSI will make a MUCH bigger difference in
performance than dual CPUs for most things.
Couple of things to check:
SCSI (if you have it) compiled in.
Recent BIOS.
SMP=1.4 in BIOS. (Not in Makefile... in Makefile SMP=1. But you knew that
:))
Same stepping on CPUs (cat /proc/cpuinfo)(Swap chips from socket to find
out).
Does the BIOS (see POSTing messages) recognize the second CPU?
Do you have the correct VRM plugged in? (first one is built in).
Are both CPUs OK? (try swapping sockets... see above).
That is all I can think of for now.... my W6-LI is waiting to go in to my
server box. It used to be my workstation mobo. My workstation mobo is now
a TYAN Thunder with dual 333MHz PIIs and dual channel SCSI. My file server
currently has a Supermicro P6DNF but the W6-LI will be a better fit in the
case cuz it's ATX form factor. That P6DNF is a tight fit even in the
Supermicro cases :(

Problem is dos fdisk only lets you create 1 primary partition and 1 extended
partition.
if you still did not install anything to the primary fat partition do the
following:
run linux install
chose fdisk when the program asks you.
delete all the partitions
make primary partition 0 (or 1, whichever is the first) for dos (make it
fat)
make primary partition ~ 7mb linux native (for /boot mount)
make all other partition you want to use for linux as extended (hda5+)
MAKE SURE YOU USE ALL THE SPACE ON YOU DRIVE. IF YOU LEAVE ANYTHING AS
"UNUSED SPACE" YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE IT AFTER YOU ARE DONE. (I am not
yelling, just emphasizing the point).
write partition table to the disk
quit linux installation
do not install linux.
install windows(dos, whatever) to your first partition.
install linux, mount second primary partition as boot
This should work. it did for me. I am using RH 5.2

Hi!
I am trying to setup RedHat 5.1, so it would work with

None of these are on "Supported hardware" list of RedHat.
i did manage to get X-windows on the screen, but it flickers.
(I assume, it means that i set video-card correctly, but
monitor frequency is off.)
So now to the question part:
Did anyone have the same problem and/or where i can find a databank
listing the monitors and the settings I should use in XF86Config

Thank you,

I'm running RedHat Linux using the most recent kernel. I'm looking for a
good X Windows based web browser.
I've downloaded and installed Netscape, but it uses an old libc file. I
installed the "aout" utilities, but that didn't fix it.
I'm currently using arena, but it is very buggy.
Any suggestions?

Kraxel has links to all the other relevant stuff from there.... xawtv
works fine with the Hauppauge and STB TV cards I have tried. I have been
watching cable TV and using a Phillips and generic cameras with both. Very
cool.

PS Some, not all, TV cards have SVHS, check before you buy.

Subject: red hat 5.2 need to make a PC what would you use
Date: Sat, 6 Feb 1999 17:46:28 +1100
I am a new user coming from an NT server background
I have got red hat 5.2 software
I require a PC to install it on and I build them.
I have consulted the Hardware Compatibility List and could use that but
prefer not.
What machine would you build today (even dual boot Microsoft NT or Win98
(prefer 98l; what's easier??)) / Linux server for that software that will
install no fuss and can train a person being myself in the Linux OpSys upon.
I prefer to use the most popular name branded equipment as it will be a
prototype for me to help make Red Hat installed PC's for freinds.
To help you I want as much tier1 hardware as possible as that seems no fuss.
I require:
Motherboard
Memory
CPU
SCSI card
2 HDD >8GB
CD ROM rewriteable prefer or writeable
floppy
Ethernet RJ45 10megabits off EH801 Planet 8 port HUB to connect to WinNT
server 4 SP4
Printer Photo quality colour 2nd generation layer technology preferred eg
Canon BJC7100
modem 56 baud external phone prefer (use banksia wave sp56 or netcom
roadster II now)
Sound Card (creative AWE64 is crap on NT so prefer not if IT dual boot)
If you know, tell me whether these work on red hat 5.2
scanners specifically Canon FB620P
Imation LS120 drive parallel port EPP mode
Seagate SCSI 8000N TR4 8GB
EPSON EPL5500 Laser
HP DeskJet 540
This is a prototype so I am happy to give your recommendation a go
thanks
