I have an ACER (Texas Instruments) Extensa 500T notebook equipped with a
NeoMagic MagicGraph 128 ZV+ video card and a SuperVGA 800x600 LCD TFT
monitor. The video card is not supported from XFree86 3.3.2-8, so I have to
run X with a VGA16 X server. I would rather find a better X server to have a
fully working Linux installation on my notebook.
The same problem regards the modem, an LT WinModem.

Could anybody help me, please?

The only two Epsons I've had any dealings with are both very good low-end
Epsons. These are the Epson Stylus Color II and the Epson 800. I used the
Stylus II until if simply wore out... ;). Up until that time however, I
printed reams and reams of paper on it with no problems to speak of. Make
sure to use the print head cleaning procedure often and you should be okay
(this is explained in the manual and on the underside of the cover over the
print mechanism.

I love my E800 also. It prints fairly good for a low-end inkjet and just
keeps on truckin' along. The only downside to either of these is that they
are a little slow on the ppm end of things. Nonetheless, since price was
more of an issue to me than blazing speed, I bought the Epson over both
Canon and HP.

In the end it's always a personal decision, but there are some thoughts from
a user in the trenches... ;)

I have been trying to install linux on a 486 with an LG 32X CD drive. It
is an ide/atapi drive.

When i install the boot process freezes just after it recognises the CD
Rom drive ie. I get something like this:

        hda ... hard disk details
hdb ... CD Rom drive details

Nothing after hdb has been recognised.

If I unplug the CD then the boot process continues through to the
installation prompts.

Any help will be hugely appreciated.

The old Celeron's (300 and 333 without the A suffix) have no L2 cache. The new
Celeron's (333A, 350, and now 400Mhz) have 128K of L2 cache that runs full
speed (the Pentium-II has 512K of L2 cache that runs 1/2 speed). A Celeron is
designed to run with 66Mhz memory (while the current P-II runs at 100Mhz
memory). However, a lot of people have been successfull at overclocking the
333A it to 100 Mhz memory, given the right motherboard.

Though I doubt anybody will answer this I really could use some help. I
have a SIIG PCI SCSI BusMaster card which seems to be recongnized as in
/proc/pci file it lists the adapter, but it does not detect it during
boot up and when I reconfigure my kernal I lose half of the modules that
normally get loaded at boot up. I got the driver from initio, but I
can't get it to work right though it does show up in the config menu.
In any case, I really could use some help.

    Thanks,

Be aware that USR sells different 56K modems under the same model number.
I bought one that had no jumpers to disable the plug-and-play, even
though the board had the instructions printed on it to disable PNP!

I could not get it to work, so I took it back, and bought another
EXACT same model modem, took it home, and it had an older design board
with the jumpers, and a different chip set to boot. It works like a
charm.

There is a Hayes Accura that is $49 at www.compgeeks.com that should

Yes, but in plug and play mode? I'm not sure Linux will let you use
COM2 with an IRQ of 9. Besides, those settings only keep if you have a
plug n play BIOS on your mainboard, otherwise the card is a dead fish.
Even when I install plug and play modems in computers, I use the
optional jumper settings and hard set every modem I install to typical
settings (COM1=IRQ4, COM2=IRQ3, COM3=IRQ4, COM4=IRQ3) just to be sure it
works in everything.

Subject: Help installing NIC
Date: Sat, 06 Feb 1999 04:59:57 GMT

Hi, I am trying to install Linux on a 486 machine (which does not have Plug
and Play support). The network card I have can be configured to be used in
PNP or Jumperless mode. I set the card to jumperless mode, and during bootup
Linux can find the card at the correct I/O port and interrupt, but when Linux
tries to connect to the DHCP server it fails. In addition to that, after I
start using Linux from the console, I keep getting this error message:
"Trying to free free IRQx" where x is the IRQ number I am using for the
network card. I tried changing the IRQ number, but the problem still
persists. The network card I have is supposed to be an NE2000 clone, it is a
Soho Basic NIC200 card. I haven't tried changing the I/O port which has been
set to 0x300.

I was using the card successfully during a previous install, but after that I
formatted my hard disk and I couldn't use the card anymore.

Thanx,

Ramzi

Hello,
I need some guidance!
I can't figure out how to set up the modem. I am running RedHat 5.2 I have a
working modem in Windose (IRQ 9, Address 03E8-03EF, 16550A UART, set up for
pnp )
The modem is an E-Tech Bullet PC56RVP-2. I read that it is compatible with
Linux.
I have a duel boot system with Win98 and I must keep the modem working in
Win98 or my wife will kill me! So it has to stay pnp.
I have 3 questions:
1-How do I do it?
2-How do you use setserial? I think that I have to use it to set up the
modem.
3-How do I use isapnp? I think that I have to use that also.
I have read the man pages but can't figure exactly how to do it they are not
specific enough to my problem (newbie) but they do have a lot of information
of everything it can do.
I've searched the Dejanews but haven't found a complete answer.
Could someone guide me in the proper direction. It's the last thing I need
to set up.
Thanks
Brian Sullivan
