Subject: Trouble w/screen modes in xf86 4.0.2...
Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 23:39:42 -0500
I've just recently installed redhat 6.0 (came back from Mandrake 7.2)
and am having trouble with my X Server. The version on the redhat cd
didn't support my Voodoo3 3k, so I downloaded the xf86 4.0.2 tars and
installed them. Used xfree86 -configure like the directions said to.
Everything seems to be working (even DRI) when I start it up, but the
only vidmode it will run is 640x480@8bpp. When I try to switch modes
(ctrl +/-) nothing happens. The man says all vesa 2.0 modes should be
automatically set up to work, but when I comment out 8bpp it says "found
vid modes, but none compatible" or something similar and won't start.
Won't accept commandline options either. my xf86setup is old, so is
xconfigurator and the other utils. been round to some other newsgroups
and couldn't find anything to help. Anyone have any ideas/similar
problems?
- - running redhat linux 6.0, xfree86 4.0.2 w/tdfx driver, kernel 2.2.x
- k6/2 300, v3 3000 agp
PS - Does anyone know if that internal digital video-in on a v3 can
actually be used for something?

I am in the same boat. The docs are not much help. Basically you have
two options:
1) compile the drivers into the kernel
2) use a loadable module
For the former, look at the Sound-HOW-TO. For the latter, look in
Docs>Sound under your sound card.
It will make it much easier if you know exactly which sound chips you
have and what the hardware settings are. You can use pnpdump in
Slackware to tell you what it thinks the hardware settings are. Also,
make sure your BIOS isn't writing PNP settings.
Best of luck,
Robert

Well, the rate per terabyte read would still be the same. So twice as fast
gets one to an error sooner but that's an advantage and not a disadvantage.
Such errors can appear for both SCSI or EIDE single drives or RAID 0. Now
what are the undetected and unrecoverable error rates for a RAID 1 array or
RAID 5 array?

No, it just shows that you should get a professional to configure your

Nope, it's a performance enhancing disk configuration. The reason it was
called RAID is that it is an array of disks that was so substantially
similar to other RAID arrays that the word RAID was chosen because of
fundamental similarities inspite of the R. Any cretin can recognize that
fact.
Every RAID FAQ/site includes RAID 0 so just rant on.

modifying /etc/pcmcia/config.opts, the last memory-range should be
tuned.

Alexis,
try the following:
modprobe aha152x aha152x=io_port, irq, scsi_host_id
where io_port equals some hex # like 0x340
irq equals some integer like 10
and scsi_host_id equals some integer like 7 (default i think)

I also had this problem with my Leadtek WinFast Geforce2mx on my abit
KT7-raid. I run X4.0.2 and tried nvidia's latest drivers (.96 with the
non-posting of bios) with linux 2.4.1. Whenever I quit X or switched
VTs, I got the blank screen, but could still run stuff. After I upgraded
the bioses in my mx and my mobo, the problem suddenly disappeared. I had
been using the old September bios for my mx, and some November abit bios.
Anyway, I hope this information helps, as I was certainly pleased to be
able to use the new nvidia driver. Since I did both flashes before
testing, however, I can't tell you which one it was that cured the
problem. Good luck!

Xine has the best playback, plays back DVDs fine:
http://xine.sourceforge.net/
I think LiViD has the best interface, however the sync code hasn't been
added yet so the sound goes out of sync:
http://www.linuxvideo.org/
Both basically uses the same decoding code, but xine has some sync code
so it plays better.

You need a driver, which you can find on the site of highpoint themself, the
makers of the HPT370-chip, which is on your motherboard. On the site you can
click on linux, and then on htp370 to get the drivers. Their site is:
http://www.highpoint-tech.com
The only problem with these drivers is that the don't support raid, only
single disk on the udma-100 controller. And that's what I need:-(.
If you want to install redhat you can also use the special disk with new
ide-contollers. You can use the older controller driver, just search for
hpt366 on: http://freshmeat.net/
good luck,

I can't see my SCSI discs with SUSE 7.
I have a pentium 133 with 3 IDE discs + CDROM, and 2 SCSI discs on Adaptec
AHA1540B card.
Impossible to see my discs SCSI under Linux.
I would like to try to give the params to the demarrage,
because with Loadlin not average to arrive there
- I tried " Loadlin root =aha1542=0x230 " (IO of my card): nothing is seen.
There is not even a message, while booting, about loading aha1542.
Under linux, no success :
- I tried insmod aha1542=0x230 :syntax does not pass, " aha1542=0x230 "
unknown
- I tried insmodaha1542 iobase=0x230: syntax does not pass, param_iobase
unknow
- I tried insmod aha1542 io=0x230: syntax does not pass, param_iounknown
How I can do that cleanly ? ( I am not an expert! )
Thanks.

Subject: Raid 0+1 and 2 channel 3200s controller - How to best utilize 2 channels ?
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (JamJam)
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 09:35:11 GMT
I'm seeking advise on how to configure a raid 0+1 setup, for best
performance.
I have the following hardware in a Fujitsu-Siemens Primergy 670/20
server.
1 x Adaptec 3200s, Ultra160 SCSI RAID, 64MB CACHE, 2-channel controller.
4 x SCSI harddisks (36 GB, Ultra160 SCSI)
2 x 850 MHZ cpu
I will be installing Linux and running it as a intranet fileserver,
mailserver and database server(doing many large reads).
The system is setup with 2 disks on each channel:
=====================
| |
| 3200s |
=====================
CH1| CH2|
| |
DSK1--| DSK3--|
| |
DSK2--| DSK4--|
I'm wondering if one of these configurations will better utilize
the two raid channels, and thus yield better performance than the other.
Or, if it also dependable on the type of i/o actions, e.g reading from
disk, writing to disk.
Config1:
=========
1a: RAID 0: (DSK1 + DSK3)
1b: RAID 0: (DSK2 + DSK4)
RAID 1: 1a + 1b ((DSK1 + DSK3) + (DSK2 + DSK4))
Config2:
=========
2a: RAID 0: (DSK1 + DSK2)
2b: RAID 0: (DSK3 + DSK4)
RAID 1: 2a + 2b ((DSK1 + DSK2) + (DSK3 + DSK4))

When booting Linux the adapter is recognized, but I also get a message

This is a little bit paradox, because first the cardmanager says failed

Is now everything correct or not ?

Abit seems to have a slight advantage over Abit in terms of performance

I have had a great deal of difficulty reaching abit's servers for bios
