Ok ok ok ok
I probably did a foolish thing. My mcmillin RH 5.2 came with x86free
3.2.? and I heard that there was 3.3.3.1 which addressed the SIS 6326
chpset problem. ( believe it or not I had it working fine with Suse 5.3
and their xsis server, as a backup. Does anyone still have a copy of
that?)
I deleted the X11r6 directory and subdirecties, everything. I
downloaded the x86free 3.3.3.1 and followed their directions
explicitly. Problems I am experiencing are:
- dark screen with a couple of minititure icons and mouse pointer glued
to top row of screen, pointer moves left and right.
Question: Did I eliminate all traces of an environment such as fvwm and
afterstep and not reload it when I upgraded 3.3.3.1?
If so, what should I do, start over and what additional files should I
get.

That is quite strange. I have an internal IDE Zip here that works just
fine with Slack 3.4 kernel 2.0.36 being mounted as /dev/hdc4 usually
vfat. Is it possible that the drive itself is flaky?

I am building this really fast, cool game machine. 3D AGP acceleration,
2 huge hard drives, networking of some type to connect to the other
computer (this one) which I haven't picked yet, really fast modem, and
a whole bunch of other stuff. That's what I want my computer to do.
Play games. Sure, I'll have a browser, and at least one word processor,
maybe a couple of other utilities, but mostly games. Here's the
problem: I DON'T WANT WINDOWS! It crashes way too much, especially when
I am trying to play QG5 on this computer, which has Win 95 on it. I've
heard that '98 is even worse. So. I am on the horns of a dillemma. I
have a really cool game machine, will be finished in a while, but I
don't have any way to operate the thing. Is Linux going to be able to
handle the modern games like Quest for Glory 5, Quake II, Quake III
(when it comes out), Total Annihilation, Starseige TRIBES, and any more
games that they decide to throw at me in the next couple of years that I
am interested in. I know it can handle most of the games that we have
bought in the last 5 years. Quake I, Quest for Glory Anthology (really
ancient DOS games, mostly)... etc. So, should I wait a while for
Windows 2000, which is supposed to be virtually un-crashable (uh-huh),
or get something now, or get Linux, or what? I'd love to get Linux, but
the thing holding me back is that I don't know if it can handle the
games I want to throw it's way.

I have some LinkSys EtherFast PCI 10/100 that were $30 each at
Office Max and a LinkSys 10/100 AutoSense hub that is about
$160 mailorder. Speeds are better than 10mb, but not
spectacular -- about 4megabytes/second using FTP.

Unfortunately, the Red Hat install program expects that you want to
install the kitchen sink. After stripping out all the X windows packages
and many of the other non-essential packages, the smallest I could get
my install down to was about 300 MB. You'll probably add another 100 MB
for all the X packages.
However, a couple of old 240 MB drives can probably be bought used for
about $5 a piece. If you don't want to do that, you'll probably have to
give up X and look for a smaller distribution. (See
