hi all,

is there a possibility to run a Matrox Genesis Framegrabber under linux?

I'm referring to the product described on

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I am still trying to get an SMC 9332DST Ethernet board to work. It uses
the DEC 21140 chipset. It doesn't seem to get an IRQ. I have tried the
updated drivers, and the pci-scan module. This doesn't seem to do any
good. However, I can't find any documentation on what to do with the
pci-scan module. Does it have to be pre-installed somehow??

If anyone knows how to get an IRQ assigned to this board, let me know.
BTW, it gets detected fine with IRQ=10 under Win. Thanks!

I've seen that many of the new Socket A motherboards have the Creative
Labs CT5880 sound chip on board. I've heard that this is the PCI128
chip. Is this right?

If so, I'm new to linux and I'm wondering where to find the driver for
this chip. Creative Labs open sourced the drivers, so did somebody port
it?

I tried installing win98 on a dos partition and overwrote
the MBR, I booted using a floppy and then ran lilo as root, but it
still wants to boot into win98.

Is there any way of reclaiming it without reinstalling?

Anyone had any issues using the PCI Voodoo 3 3000 on linux, mandrake or red

Requesting a direct reply does not prohibit posting the
reply to the newsgroup also. Which in this case would

I've also enabled Write cacheing on both drives. That, from what I
understand, can cause data-loss after a power failure, but I'm going to
test it for a while and see if performance improves.

The above 57.66 number seems a bit interesting to me - both drives DMA
buffers read at the same speed? Is that normal?

The info on my drives looks like such;

I'm now using all of those settings. It appears as if my Sector Count was
already set to the MaxMultSect value for both drives by default.

>The figures are even better with the 2.4.x test kernels,

My kernel version is in my .signature. I must say I'm quite impressed with
the performance of these drives, if those figures are correct. I'm going
to reccomend some of these settings to a friend running a UDMA66 drive and
see what numbers he can come up with.

Oh? I've noticed snappier performance since switching to 2.4. Memory
management appears to be much better, and disk cacheing is greatly
improved.

"Ongoing VM problems"? Would you mind elaborating?

I dunno, that's just what hdparm tells me. Since applying some of the early
tweaks to my HDD's, moving 3-6MB MP3 files between drives/partitions has
GREATLY improved. I'll have to try moving a 300MB VMWare .dsk file around
and see how fast MC tells me it's moving.

Thanks again, Duane.

I installed ALSA driver, but I could't get it work.
I had some error messages about modprobe in
/etc/log/messages after rebooting.

I think my Linux cannot find soundcard itself.

My motherboard is ASUS CUV4X and my soundchip is recognized
as VIA PCI Audio Controller in Win98.

I don't have any IRQ conflicts.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone know for sure if these new TrueX drives from Kenwood are well

Sorry for the crossposts, but I'm having troupble installing either Linux or
NT. I've removed the HD (WD 20.5 GB EIDE 66) and inserted the original Linux
1GB drive that installed on another computer and the system seemed to work
just fine. When I went to install Linux onto the 1GB drive I got the same
behaviour and before:

<tons of hex numbers>

code : 8b 69 08 81 fd 2b 2f c3 a5 0f 85 df 00 00 00 8b 69 0c 85 ed
Aiee, killing interupt handler
unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at vrtual address at
00000088

Then I gave up and tried to install NT on the 30GB drive (using only the
first 2GB) and kept getting the same problems with the NT CD (can't copy
mfc42.dll, etc) and the NT the CD is fine (no scratches or anything). I
also, tried using different NT CD's and got the same probelms...

Is there a problem with trying to install Linux (or NT for that matter) with
an onboard EIDE controller and a EIDE hd with a IDE CDROM?

HELP!

Jeff.

There's vmware (http://vmware.com), but it's commercial and not cheap.
And, AFAIK, no emulator will allow you to use hardware which isn't
supported by the host OS, i.e. you won't be able to use windows drivers
for a device that Linux doesn't support.

I've seen a lot of reports of problems with these drives and Linux. It's
possible they've been fixed, though, or that there's a workaround I've
not seen mentioned. I have no personal experience with these drives,

For DAE, it's hard to beat Plextor models, but Pioneer SCSI models are
also reportedly pretty good.

You asked a question, you got an answer.

The "mt" command is used for controlling tape drives, including enabling
compression. Type "man mt" for information about how to use this
command.

Actually UMSDOS is not a contiguous file. See zipslack for details.

Also, aaca, you might want to install zipslack, then install redhat
packages one by one, either with init 1 or with a bootdisk. this kinda
borders on crazy, so proceed with caution.

One more suggestion: free as much space as possible, (600MB is prob
safe) and try to get to a text (ncurses) installation. This usually
provides you with the maximum amount of options and control that an
install allows.

S3/Diamond has recently released a number of Xservers for various S3
chipsets and Diamond cards. However, the Savage4 isn't part of that,
because that chipset is already natively supported by XFree86, so
basically it should work anyway. Unfortunately I have no info beyond
that. If the A200 isn't in the card list, and S3 Savage4 isn't either,
you'll have to configure your Xserver manually. I would appreciate it if
you sent me a message when you get it working. Though Linux is not
