Probably the easiest (safest) thing to do is to repartition the disk and
assign the bad sectors to an unused area (if they are not scattered all
over the disk).
Otherwise, look up the man page for badblocks.

Go to their website. They have a Linux driver there -- although I
wish I could give you the exact URL, because it was difficult to
navigate to the Linux page. It worked for me.

All modern harddrives deal internally with bad sectors until they
run out of pre-allocated "scratch area" for remapping bad blocks.
If bad blocks are starting to show up it means that the HD ran out
of "scratch area". May I suggest something? Start backing up NOW!!!
When modern harddrives start to fail usually they go bad, very bad,
fast, REALLY fast.
Good Luck

This should be possible with mgetty/vgetty. With vgetty come `vm', an
extension of bash I think, which can communicate with a modem
via a voice library. You can dial, send, receive, ...
I use vgetty as an answering machine, but also for remote checking
of new messages, and starting programs via the telephon line.
For your problem I would sugest the following procedure:
Something happened, call up a vm shell script which dials the
sysop and plays a message, either already recorded or via speech
synth (rsynth, ...). THis should be fairly easy to do. Ask in
de.alt.comm.mgetty (it is in english, not in german), look to
http://alpha.greenie.net/mgetty/

I have a SIIG PCI Fast SCSi BusMaster and I really like it, but I can only
use in DOS or Win98 as neither SIIG or initio will help me in getting my
kernal configured properly and I've gotten limited responses to my posts
in various newsgroups. If I was you I would find out just which adapters
your kernal supports and buy one of those so that you don't have to go

MO devices act just like hard disks. So it will be /dev/sda (first SCSI
disk), /dev/sdb (second SCSI disk), or whatever. You probably already
have these device files.
Hope this helps.

Hi - I had a similar problem - I found that the drive had been
formatted and installed in 'normal' mode, not the more typical LBA -
You may want to try changing the drive mode from LBA to normal or
large.
As for why it matters, the drive mode affects how information is
accessed (and stored) on the drive. Without going too much into it,
the crux of the matter is that information is written differently on a
normal mode drive then an LBA mode drive.

any help much appreciated. if this is a known bug with the server does

If your 400 Mhz is from an out of the box "A" model, then it isn't
overclocked, just 66 Mhz x 6; should be fine. OTOH, if it is a 266/66
running at 4 x 100 instead, you should still be fine, but with no L2
cache. either way, use a good heatsink, and you should still be fine,
and I don't mean the standard sized Celeron one either! You won't
miss the cache if your running the 400A, as it is nearly as fast as a
P2 at the same speed, and you could even use an older LX chipset mobo,
since you would be using only the 66 Mhz bus, and even with the BX
board, you would then need cryogenics to overclock it to 600 Mhz, with
some REALLY expensive RAM, mucho grande deniro for little additional
speed gain in real world terms for the money.
Whether you will notice a difference is more a factor of what
you are used to though-if you are upgrading from a 486 Cyrix, then it
really doesn't matter, does it? :-))

Fortunately this little piece of Linux lore is soon to die the ignoble death
it so richly deserves.
Get the latest 2.2.X kernel (2.2.1 as of this writing) and compile it.
Not only will your system run faster due to improved memory management etc.,
the kernel will now automagically detect the correct amount of memory.
Once all the distributions upgrade to 2.2.X releases, this issue will finally
be just a bad memory.

I'm a Linux newbie (but not a UNIX newbie) with a problem...
Just installed RedHat 5.1 on a VIA MVP3 K6 system with a Diamond
Stealth 3D 4000 AGP card. Ran Xconfigurator, it found the VIRGE
chipset, and installed support for it for X-Windows. I'm trying to run
it at 1024x768x16
When I use X-Windows, I get two desktops side by side, and each is
compressed horizontally, like the display is actually 2048x768. Also,
when I try to move a window, the fonts get corrupted and I have to
refresh the display.
I've scanned this newsgroup, and the general recommendation seems to
be to use the SVGA server instead. The question is, how do you get
Xconfigurator to do that, or is there a config file you need to edit?
Thanks for helping a newbie who's down on his luck....
