Hi,

I'm having trouble w/printtool on a recently-installed redhat 7.0
system. When I bring up printtool & go to configure a filter, only a
few..maybe 10...printers show up in the list "printer type." From what
I've read (& experience w/a RH5.2 system i ran years ago) I know my
printer is well supported under linux, & I thought it was supposed to
show up on this list...but it doesn't.

The printtool & rhs-printfilters rpms were installed directly from the
rh7 install CDs. Can anyone suggest what might be going on? Did I
forget to do something?

Thanks,

The SB-Live card is one that is supported by both.

Hmmm, do you have any idea why I'm getting the following error
message when I access ttyDx (Digi board under 2.2.14):

(hcsd) used obsolete /dev/cud3 - update software to use /dev/ttyS3

Please note I'm not calling cud3 but I am calling ttyD3. I have all
the code and can post any section you think may need looking at.

Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 14:49:34 GMT

I just bought myself a Toshiba Satellite Pro T2400CS, its a 486/50 with
20Mb Ram 1Gig HD. I did not recieve a manual and cannot find any thing
on the net toshiba denies the machines existance (kinda). So I looked at
all the ports it has and it has two pcmcia ports one on either side of
the machine one is a type II and the other is a type III.

And now to my question what is Cardbus and how does it differ from
standard pcmcia? Will a cardbus network adapter work in my machine? And
what in your opinion is the best Network 56K Modem adapter to get?

I am running a cut down version of slackware 7.1 on it.

It also has a scsi port out the back but I wouldn't have a clue how to
get that to work and it also seems to have a speaker and mic input but I
don't know what sort of sound card it has (except that it is not
soundblaster compatible)

If it's an external Modem it should definatly work with linux ( I don't
know about USB modems though). I used to use a USRobotics Sportser flash
56K in linux to connect to the net. Most external modems use the same
language just hook it up to a serial port and talk to it.

Cyclic Redundancy Check is what CRC means but what does that mean? It
means that a program was checking the validity of the file it was
uncompressing (in your case) and it failed the check as the data was
corrupted. What lilo is uncompressing is actually the kernel (correct me
if i'm wrong) and this means the system will not boot. It appears that
your kernel is corrupt

Is this a floppy disk lilo boot or is linux installed to your hard disk?

1. Floppy Disk Lilo Boot

Then the kernel is on the Linux Boot disk (assuming it's not a special
case *)

If it is a floppy disk boot then try rebuilding the linux boot floppy.
Also try using the disk that failed on another computer. It if it fails
on another computer then the disk is at fault if it doesn't there may be
a problem with the floppy drive in the machine.

2. Hard disk Lilo Boot

In this case I have assumed that you have installed linux to the hard
disk already but when you boot it comes up with this error.

In this case the linux kernel on the hdd is corrupted. You will need to
boot linux off of floppy disks and mount the linux partition. Then you
must overwrite /vmlinuz with a good kernal image (and possibly rerun lilo)

Hi,

I am experiencing complete system lockups when playing WAVs or MP3s
using a recently purchased Soundblaster PCI128. Recording works fine but
when playing I can hang the machine reliably. Sometimes after a couple of
seconds, sometimes immediately.

Hardware: 486DX4/100, 48MB RAM, Board Asus SP3G, NCR SCSI-Controller
On-board with two hard disks and a CD-ROM

Software: SuSE Linux 6.4, I have replaced the 2.2.14 kernel which comes
with SuSE 6.4 by a 2.2.18 kernel.

The lockups do not depend on the software used for playing.

The es1371 driver detects the card:

> es1371: version v0.22 time 20:21:45 Feb 15 2001
> es1371: found chip, vendor id 0x1274 device id 0x5880 revision 0x02

> es1371: codec vendor v (0x838476) revision 9 (0x09)
> es1371: codec features 18bit DAC 18bit ADC
> es1371: stereo enhancement: SigmaTel SS3D

I can access it with a mixer and with wavrec (which I use for recording).

To me the problem seems to be related to disk access or PCI bus access,
because when the machine hangs, always the HDD LED is on. Another reason
why I believe this, is that I managed to play a 5 second WAV-file just
recorded without lockup, but whenever I play something which is certainly
not in the buffer cache, the machine locks up.

The SB PCI128 card itself seems to be o.k. I have put it into another box
(200MHz Pentium MMX, IDE-disk). There it works without any problems (same
Linux distribution, same kernel (except for the SCSI stuff being replaced
by IDE).

Now my questions:

1. Did anybody experience similar things with this sound-card and/or
motherboard? Searching the web I couldn't find anything.

2. Anything else I could try to make the card work?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Johannes

I used a similar procedure last summer to install 20 RH6.2 133MHz
Pentium boxen with ~2G harddrives. Each HD took about 30 minutes to
duplicate, which is about the same amount of time it took to to an
install. Except that I didn't have to tend the boxes and answer
dialogs.

I had two different HD types, and dd would not work between the
different types (even though both HD's had the same CHS settings). But
that was OK - I just got two setup's going at the same time.

After I moved the HD's into the target box, I changed the hostname/ip
address and ran Xconfigurator (because we were reusing the old monitors
with the newly acquired CPU's).

Other Cards than the SBLive are the Crystal 3.06 Driver based Cards:
A-Open AW320 (very cheap and simple) and Terratec DMX X-Fire 1024
(similar to SBLive)

WinOS2 and FM-Midi supported, Flash is - at the moment - not working
under OS/2 (but hopefully this will be solved by the Flash/2 Team real
soon)

Yes making the disk primary will solve the problem but it is not the
best solution.

If you look in /usr/doc/Linux-mini-HOWTOs/LILO. You will see in section
four that it talks about a lilo command line called bios. Try and follow
the instructions. What it does is remap your drives in the bios so that
drive 3 becomes drive 1. It doesn't matter about a motherboard that
young either.

Right. I doubt, however, that the poster's situation was just
like that :-)

Ho-hm. "chat" doesn't have anything even remotely in common with
"reliability" at all. You'd usually be better off rewriting the serial
communications part of the application in question then trusting
on a necessarily unreliable way of handling serial data exchange.

But then, that's OT here :-))

I just installed Slackware 7.1 on a toshiba T2400CS this is a 486 with
only a floppy no cd possible. I started off with the slackware disks but
most of them don't fit on floppys so what did I do?. I used a msdos
partition and laplinked from a computer that could access the files.
then I copied the files from the msdos partition to the linux one and
told the installer to install from that.

But of course that assumes that you have laplink and a cable available.
Another possobility is install a compatible pcmcia network card and boot
with the right drivers and install over a network.

The most tedious method is to repackage all you software onto floppys
and copy them across but I don't recommend this at all.

Question does your redhat install floppy detect the pcmcia ports at all?

Of course you best bet is to make two partitions one linux one windows
Install win98 or Me and copy the cdrom contents to the windows partition
and then using boot floppys copy the files to the linux partition. and
then crush the evil windows partition with some sort of partitioning
software.

Subject: Help compiling new kernel with FastTrak100 IDE controller?
Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 10:48:45 -0500

I got a fresh installation of RH7 installed on a mirrored 20GB IDE setup
with a Promide FastTrak100 controller. That was practically a no-brainer :-)
The problem I have now is I don't know how to correctly upgrade the kernel.
I installed 2.2.17-whatever, and but when I try to boot with the new kernel,
it doesn't like the ft.o module and I get a kernel panic.
I'm guessing that since I'm booting off of the Promise controller, that I
need to somehow compile the new kernel with the driver? When I originally
installed RH7, I used a driver disk per Promise's web site insructions...
would the RH7 install re-compile a kerner to add support for the device? I
doubt it, but it seems like that's what I have to do to ugrade the kernel...
Please e-mail with suggestions :-)

You have to alter the kernal. If you read the help file on
Matushista/Panasonic/Creative etc in make menu config at the bottom of
the file it says

"The driver is able to do extended probing for interface addresses and
drive types; this can help to find facts in cases you are not sure, but
can consume some time during the boot process if none of the supported
devices get found. Once your drive got found, you should enter the
reported parameters into drivers/cdrom/sbpcd.h and set "DISTRIBUTION 0"
there."

Obviously it the kernel is looking at all the wrong ports and if you
read the sbpcd.c file you'll see that it never looks for 0x220

so open up that sbpcd.h file and goto the line that says
#define CDROM_PORT 0x230
and change it to
#define CDROM_PORT 0x220

you only need to do this for the first interface board

then continue down the file and find the line that says
#define DISTRIBUTION 1

and change that 1 to a 0 (zero)
#define DISTRIBUTION 0

this will make the kernel accept your CDROM_PORT setting and stop it
from autoprobobing

once you have done this recompile the kernel and reboot
