Another thought: if you haven't rebooted since installing Gtk,
you'll also want to run ldconfig to update your shared library
search tables. This is usually done during reboot.

Hope it helps -

HI all

I have a little problem. When I installed RedHat 5.2, everything went
fine except the sound card didn't work. issuing the command 'cat
/dev/sndstat' would display no information on the device.

So, I compiled a new kernel, and configured the sound properly. I know
it because it worked. Didn't change anything else when I configured the
kernel.

The sound card worked, but no network anymore. When booting the new
kernel, I can see the "Delaying initialization of eth0". Huh?

When I boot the original kernel, no problem, the network works. But no
sound......

So I can't have the best of 2 worlds for now. I tried a couple of
things, like putting the following line in /etc/lilo.conf:

append="ether=10,0xc000,eth0"

then ran "lilo", rebooted, still no network (but great sound, though ;-)

I ran "netconfig", saw that the device was deactivated, so tried to
activate it, didn't work. Even rebooted, still no result, besides the
great sound.

It may be worth mentioning here that there is no hardware conflict for
sure (because if I boot Win98, both devices work, and I don't mean here
that Windoze is better than the beloved Linux, au contraire).

Any clue anyone?

Michel

I'm down with that...I had to deal w/ 8bpp on my laptop for so long until
XFree 3.3.3 showed up w/ support for my stupid Neomagic Vid Chip.

This is cool...especially since I'll be building a little network and tunneling
everything through the Linux box w/ ISDN :-)

I'm trying to get 2.4 GHz WaveLAN non-IEEE cards to work on two linux
2.2.1 systems, and I'm having a few problems.

1) Neither system recognizes the cards when booted. I've turned off ISA PNP
in the bios and on the system; I set the jumpers to 0x390 io base address,
but neither when I boot the system with the thing compiled into the kernel nor
when I load a module does the system recognize it.

I am going to try putting together a dos boot floppy to test the hardware to
make sure it's not a hardware or bios problem, but I suspect it's a driver
issue.

2) When I try compiling the wireless tools, they fail to build, giving the
following errors:

14:29@systemics:/home/ryan/wavelan/utils# gcc -lm iwconfig.c
/tmp/ccc00702: In function `float2freq':
/tmp/ccc00702(.text+0x55): undefined reference to `pow10'
/tmp/ccc00702: In function `freq2float':
/tmp/ccc00702(.text+0xf1): undefined reference to `pow10'

I've had this problem with both wireless tools .15 and .16

Has anyone gotten wavelan 2.4ghz non-IEEE 2.4ghz to work with 2.2.1?

cc responses to [EMAIL PROTECTED] please.

Greetings all,
I am new to device driver development on Linux. I have a couple of
conceptual questions which I hope some of you will be able to answer.

What exactly is a port? Is it a piece of hardware or is it some piece
of software? What does it do? How can you make a driver and a device
talk to the same port? Are all i/o ports the same? direct ansewrs as well
as referal to sources and urls is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

maybe its not so simple -
is this ethernetcard compatible to something that has a linux-driver
(like ne2000, or 3com509, or ....?)
i use a absolut simple ne2000 -compatible pcmcia-ethernetcard, and its
automatically recognized at startup -
didn't even have to compile the driver into the kernel .

Maybe Windows is confused bacause it has lost a drive like D: which
previously was partition with fat and now is no longer recognized. Then
Windows might want to move the CDrom to become D:. Maybe it will be able
to find the CD again if you do a "add new hardware".

Try

cd /mnt/floppy

instead.

Then you will have to type

umount /mnt/floppy

However, mounting and unmounting floppies are not necessary. Check the
manpage for mtools

man mtools

mdir a:

Those programs are enough as long as you are only going to copy some

If I understand correctly, what you refer to as the "black screen" is the
command line, from which you start Xwindows with the 'startx' command. Try
running 'Xconfigurator', which should leave you with several resolutions to
choose from in Xwindowing mode.

Bob;

I can't supply all the steps but I can pass on the following.

You are right Xfree 3.3.3 is needed if you want to run the Xfree server.

While the upgrade to Redhat 5.2 may be worthwhile you will still have to
upgrade the Xfree supplied with it. It may be possiible that the newer
CDs from RedHat may have the latest version of Xfree, I don't know. My
CD dose not have 3.3.3 it is a recent improvement.

If you get your Xfree distributiion from RedHat it should be relatively easy
install. Some of the first servers available for the G200 took a bit of
effort to install properly. The important thing is to upgrade your Xfree
files then run a configurator program to set every thing up. It may be a
good idea to save reccord your current settings for your monitor.

Actually if you upgraded your system and have an LX motherboard (or possibly
any new motherboard, but the LX motherboard bit me), the #9 GXE64 Pro video
card is not compatible with the motherboard. When I upgraded my 90 Pentium Mhz
to a 233 Mhz Pentium-II, I used an LX motherboard, and discovered the problem.
I could not get either Windows nor XFree to work, but I could get Linux text
mode to work. When I asked around, I discovered it was a known problem (but
obviously I had not seen any hint of it before upgrading the system). I
finally went out and bought a Matrox Millenium-II video card.

Note, there are two drivers for the #9 card, the SVGA driver and the older S3.
As suggested by David Fox, you might try each one, to see if either will work.

Hi,

You need to recompile you kernel with APM support. Then you need to install
a copy of apmd the kernel dameon that controls advanced power management.
Under redhat 5.2 you go to /usr/src/linux and type make menuconfig. Here
you need to pick the options that you want for the kernel. If you don't
know what to pick, use the help for each option. It is best to build most
things as modules since doing it any other way fattens up your kernel. so you
after configuring you kernel you need to type the falling in this order:

make zImage
make modules
make modules_install
make install

Then you enter the /etc/lilo.conf

matter of fact you probably just want to check ou the faq

Subject: SiS SG86C201 Video card with Redhat 5.1: Not recognizing Video memory
Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1999 22:12:09 +0200

Hi,

Redhat 5.1 on Intel 133 MHz and a SiS SG86C201 Video card does not work.
Although Xconfigurator does have this card listed, probing the card does not
recognise the amount of memory namely 1 meg, which causes it not to pick up
the clock speed of the card, which causes the devise not to work.

The way that the SiS onboard card actually works, is that it will get Video
RAM from the onboard, installed RAM via setup in the BIOS. However, Linux
does not pick up the fact that RAM have been allocated to the Video card,
thus causing it not to operate.

Any ideas?
