I have ATI's All-in-Wonder and All-in-Wonder Pro with TV-out. It only
works at 800x600 or 640x480, with no support from XFree86. That's the
same as with Windows. I haven't tried it recently though, so don't hold
me to it. =)

I'm interested in this too. I have four SCSI devices on two channels.
My motherboard (Adeptec 78xx) supports 30 devices on the motherboard.

Not that I'm planning on adding (22) 18Gig drives tomorrow, mind you...

Um, probably not, since I hadn't had any trouble running configure
with just the newer version of bash installed. What exactly is your
trouble running configure?

Have you used the 'top' utility? It will give you a continuously
updated snapshot of the most active processes on your system, giving
percentages per process of cpu and memory usage. This (and the 'ps'
program) can help you track down runaway and ghost processes also, which
you can then kill to reclaim your cpu/mem resources.

I don't get this.. I'm running RedHat 6.0 with a minimum of services.. and
after a reboot, my free memory is only about 24MB(out of 64). A few hours
later, I have about 1.7MB free, and my swap starts to become active.. I do
not have many users, nor memory-eating apps.. it all seems to go into
"cached" memory.. Now cache is nice, but I don't want all my available
memory allocated to it! And I want to avoid swap usage... can anyone
help??

Here is output of "free" command:

Hi,

I am sorry but I do not know yet. I also would like to know how can I get a
list of all the loadable modules for a given kernel without having the
.config file that generated it. Can I generate a .config file based on a
given kernel?

This would be great when one, like myself, just wants to add a module to the
current kernel.

So, as you see, I have more questions than answers :-)

I run three k6-2 350 boxes with both Windows and linux, and have had no
problems whatsoever compatibility-wise. The K6's seemed to lack in FPU
strength, from what I remember reading; if you're not doing a lot of
Linux financial applications, then the K6 is the cheaper, easier way to
go.

I use the K6 with a variety of boards, from ASUS to FIC. The FIC
VA-503+ is a favorite of mine, because it supports seperate RAM and CPU
bus speeds, and is somewhat overclockable (www.tomshardware.com).

Hello,

Which X-server did you try to install for the card? If you are using an
ATI card, try the mach64 or mach128 server. Using the XF86 config program,
you should be able to select the card to use, and the server to use. The
mach64 or 128 should work. If the card is not specifically listed, try
using the simple VGA server. If some of the settings for the card (memory
size, etc.) are in question select probe for that option.

I have installed an ATI Xpert98 into a system running linux/XF86, used the
mach64 server and works great.

It's supposed to work like that. "Free" memory is unused (and thus
useless) memory. Your RAM is being used for things like filesystem
cache.

It's OK. There is a certain amount of memory that is still "free", in
case one of your applications suddenly needs more memory, or you start
another app.

this doesnot give you an Image, but -of course - you can use tar for
backing up your linux on the sambaparts: something like: "tar cvf
/home/smb/linux.tgz /etc /usr/local /home" ....
will create a tar-file [from all files in /etc /usr/local /home] that
you can write to cd in win98.
if you made the /home/smb dir accessable from win98

and then dump this image to the

yeah, using rw-media is verryy cheap, but sometimes there are lots of
hardware-like-errors with cd-writers

> (nah, who need the noisy tape backup??)
> Anyone here every done this before? could you please share with us for

did you think about "the other way", linux doing the cdwriting ?
this make only sense if you work on the samba-shares [seems a good idea]
or use nfs to give linux access to the win98,
maybe better/easyer to use smbclient and let win98 share the files you
want to backup

the imo advantage is that linux is much better in writing cd's
unattended.

I'm currently using an Intel system with a PCI bus. I also have a

I was wondering if the same PCI hardware will work on both computers.
I was thinking that the answer may depend on just how connected (or
divided) the efforts of Linux x86 and Linux PPC are. Are kernel
modules for PCI hardware generally interchangeable (when compiled on
the appropriate system), or do modules for x86 need to be re-written
to run on PPC systems?

Hello,
I saw on your mail that you have experienced with Win. You are the right
person I am looking for. I hope ot to disturb you though...

I have a laptop...

Since I have partitioned my HD into two 2GB. One for Win98 and one for
SuSE Linux 6.1 Both partitions are in the C: drive.

Since I have done this, my Win98 has given me a few problems, which I
can't really solve...

One of them is that it will not go stand by anymore. As soon as I press
the key combination to send it stand by is says:

"Your computer cannot go stand by because a device driver or program won't
allow it."

This is curious because no program is running and I don;t see what other
thing could be bothering it...

The second problem is that the overall system is slower in Win98. When I
enter the System properties window, and choose Device Manager, I see that
my Primary IDE controller and my Secondary IDE controller have a problem,
whereas my Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller works perfectly.

I then look at performace and have three strange message:
Compatibility mode reduces over all performance
Drive C using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system
Drive D using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system

My drive D is the CDROM drive...

What can I do to fix this. I have no clue on how to get it working. Should
I remove all the hard disk drivers? Or should I do something else?

I had the same problem when installing RH 6.0, but i did not follow
the xf86config advices : Using Xfree 3.3.3.x, the Virge cards are
better supported (and it seems to work better) with SVGA server.
So follow all the advices of xf86config, which means :

        * choose your card from the list,
        * choose the SVGA server (usually the server recommended),
        * do nor specify RAMDAC type nor clock settings nor probing.

Someone told me it was easier to configure your X-Server from XF86Setup,
i did not try it.

Hope it will help you.
Best regards,

Fabrice Vergnenegre.
