My SB 64 PCI works fine with 2.2.1 kernel. You are right, the sndstat
device is not supported by the driver. Try playing a WAV or similar via
/dev/dsp. Should be no problem.

Works fine with the included drivers since the 2.1.13x kernels.
What's your problem ?

You only need special software to play MIDI-files. Try kmidi or timidity.

no kidding...in fact, I heard it just the opposite...that windows was
crashing itself and so many other systems, and has reduced the overall
productivty of soooo many people, that many of the telcos, and, uh, the
government...yeah, the government, them too...well, they're thinking of
forcing everyone to switch over to macs...

I heard it from a friend's mother who was talking to the fellow whose
wife is supposed to be really really good friends with another woman
who's really really smart.

that's what I heard anyway...

No the black screen is not a virtual terminal.

Handy hint while I remember: cntrl+alt+backspace to shutdown the Xserver
imediately.

I reckon that it is your monitor settings that are stuffing you up. Sounds
like you need to start from scratch.

Which Xservers do you have installed? use rpm -q XFree86-SVGA to find out. I
would try loading the SVGA server if its not installed.

Run Xconfigurator and choose your mouse as ps/2 compatible. The your actual
card or standard a SVGA card. Then don't probe hardware. Then choose no
clock chip, 4meg (or 8meg? depending on your card) then no or none to the
other question here (I never remember the name of it).

Now when confronted with your monitor selections choose monitor that can do
1024x768@75hz as this is a pretty standard resolution. Then choose only one
resolution from the next box ie 800x600x32 or 1024x768x16 or what ever you
want to run at. This will disable virtual screens.

If it works then great if not then ????????? Good luck

Cheers James.

Subject: System performance on differrent processors. PPC, SPARC, ALPHA, and INTEL
Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1999 23:19:03 -0500

Hi All;

After installing the new kernel 2.2.1 on an old 586 laptop (133Mhz), and
seeing an amazing performance increase, I have to wonder how the kernel
performs on other architectures. Is the speed up I'm seeing Intel
specific or have the other platforms seen similar increases in performance?
To be honest I'm not even sure that the new kernel is avialable yet on PPC
or Alpha.

Is it safe to assume that most of the performance tweaking of Linux 2.2.1 is
targeted at I386? With the same generation kernel which chip set gets the
best performance out of the kernel Alpha PPC Sparc or Intel?

This question comes to mind because of the availibility of low cost PPC
based machines from Apple and IBM. In fact IBMs "giving a boost" to Linux
is what started me thinking about what would be the best hardware platform
to replace my P2 system.

The big question is given three 400Mhz systems one Intel, one PPC based and
one Alpha based which is going to perform best all around? I know this is
a hard question to ask, and the K7 may be the big contender, but only
recently has pricing of these other systems made thinking about it
worthwhile. Since I don't have access to this equipment comments from
someone in the kow would be helpful.

If you can deduce how to make an El Torito Linux CD just from the
mkisofs man page without having any doubts then I salute you. Had
I not discovered the Phoenix white paper on El Torito I wouldn't
even know what the man page was talking about with "boot_catalog".
Well sure, anyone can infer boot_catalog and boot_image have
something to do with booting, but how does that translate into
making a disk?

I still don't know with any level of comfort what all the steps
are. What needs to be done before mkisofs? After? I don't want to
know all the gory details. Give me an integrated tool (like
xcdroast which supposedly will have El Torito capability added in
the near future) or at least a procedure that describes what
components need to be executed when. It's hard to believe that
this is so cutting edge that a HOWTO doesn't exist. Maybe I should
write one (groan). :-)

Subject: compaq/lance trouble

Hi all,

i am trying to setup networking services on an Compaq Deskpro XL 566 but
onboard-ethernet (combined AM53/79C974 SCSI-ENet, SuSE Linux 6.0) does
not work. SCSI works fine as long as I compile the driver as a module.

The Lance driver (NI6510) detects a generic NE2100 when I assign correct
port (0x7000) and irq (11) according to Compaq Setup utilitiy and a free
dma channel (2,3 or 5). Then it cancels with an "Device temporarely
unavailable" error. Not assigning a dma channel, the driver cancels with
a dma-related error.

I also tried serveral different drivers (PCnet, tlan), all quit with
"ressource busy" or "No ...-card found" errors.

I am out of ideas, any help is appreciated.

TIA
Chris

Thanks. I found a lot of info on the german site where the software
originates. The "CD-Writer HOWTO" is woefully out of date at metalab. I now
have both my ATAPI cdroms running as /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1.

I haven't tried burning yet, but will later tonight.

Try Control Panel->Modem->Properties->Speaker Volume.
If this doesn't work, try add "ATM0" in Extra Setting at Connection

That's too much buddy!

You can get a CPU and a mother board for much less. Consider it about 850 a

Hi,

I work for a top 5 PC OEM, and we are currently evaluating RedHat Linux 5.2
with our desktops and workstations. While I was compiling a hardware
compatibility matrix, I noticed that X doesn't support many current monitors
that we OEM.

I know the user can specify the monitor, but is there a way to send the specs
for the monitors to either Xfree86 or Red Hat, so they could include them
from the monitor database/picklist? I've gone through the FAQ for Xfree86
and RedHat, but I couldn't find anything on this subject.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, and further the credibility of Linux.

Also: will DDC2b (monitor PnP) be supported any time soon under Linux?

Please email your replies, since I'm only able to check news via dejanews at

Whow there!

get a BX6 rev 2 mobo for $160
celeron 300A for $90

and overclock it to 450Mhz, 464Mhz no problems
and if you are lucky 504Mhz.

and you have $600 left over to buy more good stuff like Voodoo-2 card,
bt848 tv capture card, bigger harddisks.

karlo

Do not throw your money away buying a PII 450 for $700 when you can have
the same performance from a 300A running @450 for $90.

ps There isn't that much performance difference @300 and @450.
I have a 300A@450 running Linux and wincrap without a hitch
