My OpenLinux installation went very well, the only thing that did not
install properly was my NIC. I have a SMC EZ 10/100 (SMC1211tx), and
basically, COL didn't detect it during the installation, and when booting it
says eth0 is not present. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it
would be much appreciated.

Linux is able to run native Linux programs. Some games like Quake II
does exist in native Linux versions. However most games come in one
version for the toy OS only. If you want to use your computer for games
and Linux I would suggest that you make it a dual boot system to be able
to handle those games which Linux can't run.

Well, prestel is certainly a lot closer to you than torque.
(I offered Jon a mirror here, but he doesn't seem to want it.)
BTW, his page works fine for me ;-)
The bottom line is probably that you should wait ... There are

You would see exactly that. The user authorisation will then be done via
PAP (probably) or CHAP. Your username and password then go inot the
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets or /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file.
So, have the chat script finish after it sees the CONNECT message, and
let pppd take over. Look in /var/log/messages for a
<auth pap> or <auth chap> in one of the lines. That will tell you
which.

This means that I am helping them in getting the drivers fixed for 2.2.x
(they already are), and getting them into 2.0.x also. Looks like they will
make it into 2.0.37. 2.2.1 has support for the Initio INI-91XXU(W), and
the driver for the INI-A100 U2W controller is in 2.2.1-ac as well. I am also
trying to get that driver into 2.0.37, and I think the next pre-patch will
include that as well.
>And there don't seem to be any loadable modules for it, not with RH 5.2.
RH 5.2 doesn't support it out of the box, but it should be possible to
create boot disks for that. I'll try and look into that.
>Does anybody know how to get one of these things working with RH 5.2?
If you can install on a different controller, there will be no problem.
If you can't, I'll see what I can do in creating boot disks for RH 5.2.
Let me know, and I'll see what I can do. :)

there's a patch for the 2.0.36 kernel, or you can use 2.2.1 to get at
the 640 mb discs. no need to write new code. you might want to
improve some of it, perhaps, but things will work.

sort of. it's working for me, but not very well. i'm getting lots of
errors and lockups, enough so that i can't the trust the thing for
anything really. i'm not sure whether this is a configuration problem
or what at this point. anyway, you can check deja news.

The Multitech MT5634ZPX-PCI is not a winmodem, and the manufacturer

Subject: CD-ROM not recognized - RH 5.2/MAD 16 Sound Card
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1999 19:11:38 GMT
Hello, all.
I'm basically a Linux newbie, but I've been a Unix app developer for
about ten years.
I'm having problems getting Linux (RH 5.2) to recognize my ATAPI CD-ROM.
The configuration:
Epson 486/DX2-66
Primary IDE controller with 2 hard disks (hda, hdb)
MAD-16 (Mozart) Sound Card with secondary IDE controller (IRQ 15)
ATAPI CD-Rom attached to Sound Card IDE port as master
Kernel: 2.0.36 as distributed in RH 5.2
If I add parameters to LILO, such as cdrom=/dev/hdc, the kernel will
detect my second IDE port, but will be unable to initialize the drive
(returns 0xFF for status).
During the install, I was only able to get my CD-ROM to work by starting
under DOS and loading from the CD-ROM. The boot disk would not find my
CD-ROM at all.
I tried recompiling the kernel to include MAD-16 support in the kernel,
but I kept getting an error message from sb_common.c that I needed to
configure the sound card. Isn't sb_common for sound blaster cards? It
didn't look like the MAD-16 support was getting compiled in!
Next, I looked at mad16.c and noticed a comment to the effect that I
needed to change some values in a header file to enable the IDE support
for the card. I haven't tried the changes yet, but that's next.
My questions:
Has anyone out there gotten a Mozart sound card IDE port to work with
their CD-ROM?
Is the sb_common.c file needed for MAD16 support, or am I doing
something wrong in "make xconfig"? (I am enabling sound support, but NOT
the Sound Blaster)
Am I on the right track by modifying the source as described in the
mad16.c comments?
Does the 2.2.1 kernel provide any more solid support for my IDE/CD-ROM
configuration?
Thanks to all in advance. I'm looking forward to getting past these
basics and on to the "fun stuff".

You should also verify that the machine works fine with some other OS like Win95
