when you are ready, upgrade to Linux 2.2.1
it has better Large disk support

in the mean time,
change your /etc/lilo.conf by adding
append="hda=C,H,S"
replace, C,H,S with the proper physical number for cylinders, heads, sectors
from the label on the Harddrive itself
do not use the information reported by the bios when LBA is active. Those
numbers are translated numbers, very few harddisk have 255 physical heads,
the head count tends to be around 16.

after saving the /etc/lilo.conf, remember to run lilo to upgrade the boot
info

I hope someone can help me with this, I've been pulling my hair out trying to
get this to work (which is saving me money on haircuts).

I have an old 486 machine that I've installed Linux on with no problems. I'm
now trying to get XWindows configured, and I am having problems with my ATI
Busmouse.

I've gone through the mouseconfig, xf86config, and Xconfigurator without
success. Basically what happens is I startx, the screen comes up no problem
(I'm not having any problems with the video card itself), but I can't move
the mouse pointer at all. I did a cat /proc/interrupts, and tried playing
around with the IRQ settings from DOS. I now have the mouse IRQ on the card
set to IRQ 5, /proc/interrupts isn't showing any conflicts. I've also tried
using different mouse configuration in mouseconfig to no avail. And I've
also recompiled the kernel, and only selected the busmouse option in make
config. One thing I've noticed is when I boot up the machine, it detects the
ATI Busmouse, but it also detects a Microsoft InPort mouse. I can't figure
out where it's getting that from, and I'm thinking that may be the problem.

If anyone can help I'd appreciate it. If you need any output from my machine,
just let me know.

I'm looking into getting set-up with ADSL for my connection,
but no one seems to be able to tell me if it will work with
Linux. The rep at Soutwestern Bell keeps referring to Linux
as a "card" that should still work. After numerous attempts
to explain that it is an OS, he thinks I am running UNIX...

So has anyone out there set-up their Linux box with ADSL
successfully? If so, which DSL modem do you have? Any
problems with it? Thanks in advance...

Subject: Re: Large drive problem with 2.0.36

Raphael,

I have a similar Maxtor hard drive, and I had the same problem you did
partitioning it. At least in my case, it turned out that the kernel
really did know the correct capacity. As I understand things, the ide
driver in 2.0.36 will use the LBA capacity of the drive if the drive is
too large to be addressed with the geometry which it gets from the BIOS.
So your problem probably isn't the capacity that the kernel is using to
talk to the drive, but rather the capacity given to fdisk. In many cases,
the kernel will get the fdisk geometry from the BIOS, and that will not
be more than 8 GB.

I solved this problem simply by using the expert mode in fdisk to set the
number of cylinders to the correct number, which will be > 1024. You may
want to sit down with a calculator to make sure you have the right number
of cylinders; it should be the number of LBA sectors (which you can get
from hdparm -i /dev/whatever) divided by (255*63), rounded down. I think
you can probably use the other solution suggested, which is to pass
the translated geometry to the kernel. I don't know if there are other
consequences to this, which is why I chose to simply change the cylinder
count in fdisk. If you do it this way, you will be warned every time you
start fdisk that a partition has different physical and logical endings,
but the warning will go away once you reset the cylinder count, and it
won't have any effect on normal access to the hard drive.

Just installed Red Hat 5.2. Have an internal 56K USRobotics modem and have
it installed to the "Com3" port. When I query the modem with an AT command
in minicom it takes about 15 seconds to respond with the modem string. It
comes back at me with just a couple charachters and it takes a while.

I can dial out and connect to my ISP but the login prompt comes in just a
few charachters at a time also. Normal login can take minutes instead of
seconds.

Would appreciate some help....If I get this figured out Windows will be that
much closer to being gone.

First off, I had Linux printing with an old dot matrix printer, so I had
already crossed the bridge that others I see (searching "epson 740" in
comp.os.linux.hardware) haven't.

Second, the search pointed me to pages about setting up other Epson printers
under Ghostscript, including the Uniprint driver.

Third, the 740 will print with the uniprint file for the ESC 800, but it is
washed out and has blank bands. It won't print with the file for the ESC 600,
but prefers to shoot paper, instead. Further searching found someone else
who had doctored up a uniprint file for the ESC 740, but I'll say that it's
basically a slightly doctored version of the ESC 500 file.

Fourth, in price, speed, and function the 740 is in between the 640 and the
850. Specifically, the 640 has 32 nozzles per color and the 850 has 64. The
740 has 48 nozzles per color. With this information, I think it is possible
to start from ESC 600 and ESC 800 uniprint files and build uniprint files
to give the 740 its full capability. But the whole weaving thing seems to
be rather empirical, so it's going to take some time and grunting to figure
out.
