Hello,
I Just got a Motorola 56k ModemSURFR External and I have everything
hooked up right and I have done alot of shit to try to get this thing
configured such as writing a chat script and configuring my PPP and
stuff and then I used linuxconf and tried to configure it through
there and when I push connect it does nothing..I have tried all the
ports to see if it was on a different port and if I use chat -f "chat
script" it does the init string then just gives me a shell prompt! Can
anyone out there help me please! I would appreciate any help or a site
that explains in plain english how to set the modem up..I have tried
Josh's linux guide and that didn't help...Thanks!

Hi there,
I have a Hauppauge TVcard and a Elsa Victory Erazor videocard (riva128).
When I start a tvprogram (xtvscreen, kwintv or any other I've tried) the
colors are all wrong. In Windows98 I run the same resolution
(1600x1280x16bpp) and it works fine. Anybody any suggestions?
Some additional info:
Slackware 3.6.0
Kernel: 2.2.1
KDE1.1
bttv-0.6.3 or 0.5.22

Hey,
How well do these work under Linux? I know the video is supported under
XWindows, but is the built-in sound supported? Also, can anyone
recommend a specific motherboard that use the MediaGX?
Thanks,

And do you have Linux installed or do you have this problem with Windows?
What distribution and version of Linux did you install? Did the installation
program prompt you about your network card during the
installation? And how do you know you have problems with installation
of the network card and not just the network setup?

Just get RedHat 5.2 and install it. I did so, I am a newbie, and my network
works. I did not have to recompile anything. I don't know anything about the
.c file you mention. It seems to me you make it more complicated then
it really is.

Hello!
I wonder if anyone can help me? I've just got this nice new machine with an
ATI 3D Rage IIc graphics card (Mach64GT, Internal DAC Type) and can I get it
to run XFree under RedHat 5.2 (apollo)?
Can I heck.
Whatever options I try, I get a lovely screen which is fine vertically-wise,
but there are 4 repeated images horizontally.
All I ask is for 1024x768 in 8bpp on my ADI Microscan 5P. My previous card
(Expercolor DSV) worked fine so I know that it isn't monitor settings that are
screwy, just the card ones.
If anyone has sucessfully got one of these cards running then please could
you let me know because I'm dammed if I know how. If possible I'd appreciate
it if you could email me at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (remove the Z's)
since I don't check these newgroups as often as I do my mail.
Thanks!!
Rich.

If your system does not have vfat then try and use msdos instead. The
only problem with msdos is that you get 8.3 filenames, but it will work.
If the directory /mnt/zip does not exist, then you need to create it.
mkdir /mnt/zip

Just be sure you realize that the 3C515 ( I think that's the model) ISA
100TX card will NOT give you 100Mb/s. I was looking at that card for a
SoftPLC (programmable logic controller) that was in an ISA only case for
putting it on a 100TX network. 3COM's site mentions that the card will max out
at 25Mb/s due to limitations of the ISA bus.

My friend ran a ATI Rage II fine under apollo with the accelerated Mach64 server.
U might want to try a few servers (SVGA, Mach32, etc.) or even the framebuffer
server with 2.2 (slow as hell, and my framebuffer is even Matrox accelerated)

My wild guess is that those 4 horizontal screens might represent the 4 colour
channels (RGBA). I dunno.

I am using an ATI-All-in-wonder card. This is what SuperProbe command
outputs:

Hi everyone,
I have just got dial on demand working on an old 486 which is
networked to another Linux box and a win95 box.
I would like to use it as a print server as well.
Now I want to stick it up in my loft out of the way
so I am hoping to use the serial port on the Deskjet 500c.
There are two things I am asking for help with
pinouts for the serial lead and some pointers for
setting up printing.
At the moment the printer is sat on the parallel port on the other Linux
box
and all three m/cs can print to it.
any ideas anyone?.
thanks in advance

Speaking of modems - I'm using a US Robotics brand new 56K internal PnP
modem. On my old M-Tech R534 motherboard with Award BIOS, the BIOS
is configured such that IT configures PnP devices upon boot. In this way,
I don't have to run isapnptools in order to configure my modem.
It works great. The USR modem is in PnP mode, the BIOS sets it up as COM2
upon boot-up and everything works fine.

I'm running a cordless 3 button Logitech mouse with receiver at work.
My boss also has Logitech's web mouse - it looks like a remote control.
Since they're both set at the same frequency, either one can control
the X-Window desktop. it's kinda funny. The web mouse has an extremely
long range too.
There is a patch or some special config. stuff out there that will allow
you to use the scroll wheel on some applications. I did it a long
time ago on a laptop with an external Microsoft PS/2 mouse - but I don't
have the laptop or the web page references handy. Sorry. try doing a
search is Dejanews or yahoo.

I'm running a Microtek E3-Plus SCSI scanner on a Symbios 53c815 card.
It works okay with Debian 2.0 and SANE's XScanImage. The Preview
mode in XScanImage sometimes sends the SCSI bus into oblivion
and I have to cycle power on the computer and the scanner to fix it.
If I don't use the Preview window however, it works pretty well.
Unfortunately, it's still not as great as Microtek's ScanWizard is, but
it's usable. The E3 plus is pretty cheap too - like $130.00 or so.

FWIW, I think internal modems are to be avoided at all costs.
I don't want to toggle the power on a system in the event that
the modem needs a reset -- no matter how infrequently that
may be.

Man, I dream of pricing like that. I pay 35,000 yen/year for
an unlimited port connection. On top of that, my phone bill
for my data-only line runs me about another 15,000 yen/month.
That works out to close to US$2,000/year for 'net access.
OUCH.

I dare say forget it, as sad or terrible it is. You initialised all
the information necessary to know which data blocks belong to which
file and so on and so on.
You data is still there, so if there is some *very* important text
file or such you can use something like bpe or some other hex
editor to get it back, but else and with no backup ...
Very sorry,
Juergen

Right, realize the Logicode (56k modem) is a winmodem, but the older
Supra 28.8 can be run from DOS, I am just having trouble getting it
set up. Or are you saying that I have to remove the Logicode one in
order to get the other one to work? That would suck...

Hi Brad I have it running on RH 5.1 under whatever X comes with Rh5.1....
Same card ATI Xpert 98 AGP 8 meg
Xconfiguator had a bit of trouble with the card ( couldn't detect the ram ) but
aside from that it works.... now I get the same problem as you the coloum divided
screen or I did until my monitor blew and was replaced ( dont worry it was quite an
old monitor and it wasn't the first to go and the first never ran linux so )
Anyways.... do this when you run startx
press: crtl-alt-+ (if you press this again and again it will just cycle
through all possible resolutons and has the added benefit that it clears up the
divided column problem or it did for me... you can then use Xvidtune to adjust your
settings to permenantly correct this problem --I never did ).
Also to enable more than 256 colours you need to tell X to start using more like so
startx -- -bpp 16 ( or 8, 24, 32 --whichever you like )
Cheers

1. /dev/sda is just the drive. You have to mount the filesystem on
that drive.
To know which partition lies on your ZIP-disk just type fdisk /dev/sda
and it will show something like:
molch:/home/wobo # fdisk /dev/sda
Command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/sda: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 96 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 96 98288 83 Linux native
So to mount my ZIP-disk I have to type mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/zip
2. You have to create the mountpoint before you mount something. That
means there has to be /mnt/zip in your tree before you can mount the
disk to it.
Do a cd /mnt and then md zip
