It won't work because some modem functions are left off the card and
emulated by Windows software. Without the special software, it's

I bought a PRIMAX scanner to be connected to the parallel
port. I installed the SANE package on my PC with
ReadHat 5.2 just to realize that SANE does not support
my scanner and in general does not support scanners on the
parrallel port. The question to ng is:
can I make my scanner working somehow?

Sound works fine (subject to getting the right PnP settings and permissions
on the audio devices).

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (David Cook)
Subject: Help : Need to recover my partitions (longish)
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 14:12:30 GMT
Summary : Something is very confused, either in my partition tables
or BIOS or elsewhere. Also, I seem to have hard disk problems.
The details : I have two IDE hard disks - one 2.5 Gb, one 6.4 Gb.
The 2.5 G is the original disk in the machine, and has 520Mb DOS/W95
partition, the rest for Linux (5 partitions - swap, /, /var, /usr and
/home). The 6.4 is a relatively recent addition, and contains swap,
/, /var, /usr and /home partitions (much larger ones than the ones on
the 2.5 G).
I am running RedHat 4.0, I have a Cyrix 6x86 P133, 96M RAM,
IDE CD-ROM, sound card, Matrox Millenium, modem.
When I bought the 6.4 G drive, I was intending to install a newer
version of Linux onto it (rather than risk "breaking" my system with
glibc/libc issues [1] ), copy over all my old files, backup all the
DOS files I wanted to keep, then give DOS more of the 2.5 G drive
(perhaps all, if I was feeling generous :-).
What actually happened : I copied over the contents of the 2.5 G
drive, then did nothing about if for a few months (because what I
really want to do is back up eveyrthing, but I don't have a tape
drive, but if I do get one I really would prefer a SCSI one, but then
I should upgrade my hard disks to SCSI, but then I'll have wasted lots
of money on the new IDE one ... etc etc - I'm a champion ditherer ;-)
So, just over a week ago, my computer froze (it does this from time to
time, I suspect intense video activity is some sort of factor, but
this sort of random freeze is hard to track down, and it occurs rarely
enough that it hasn't seemed worth the effort).
Upon coming back up, when trying to mount the partitions from the 2.5
Gb, I saw the following :
hda : read_intr : status = 0x59 (DriveReady SeekComplete
DataRequestError }
hda : read_intr : error=0x40 { Uncorrectable Error },
LBAsect=1154583, sector=33687
end_request : I/O error, dev 03:03, sector 33687
... and then nothing more (had to be powered down).
Next, I installed RH 5.1 on a spare 500Mb on my girlfriend's computer
(to access man pages, HOWTOs, etc, in case there was something useful
on there). I wrote boot and rescue disks, booted up ok, and even
managed to mount the partitions from the 2.5 Gb and 6.4 Gb drives.
Unfortunately, instead of doing the sensible thing at this point and
copying the files from 2.5 to 6.4 drive, I decided to try to get the
2.5 G drive working properly. I ran lilo again (by mounting the
partitions on that drive, running a "chroot" to the root of it, then
running lilo with the original config on that drive). That didn't
help. I tried restoring the boot sector that I originally wrote when
installing RH 4.0, but that just took out LILO and left that drive
booting W95.
At this point, I think, the partition table on the drive also went
bad. When I boot into rescue mode and run fdisk, it shows that the
first partition /dev/hda1 occupies cylinders 1 to 520 (as it did
before), but each cylinder is now 8064*512 bytes, which means
/dev/hda1 (DOS partition) takes up most of the drive, and some 800,000
sectors are left unallocated. I think it used to be cylinders 1 to
520, but 1024 (or a number close to that) * 512 bytes.
Now I am at a loss. It is possible (maybe) that I can dig through the
last two years worth of pieces of paper that I have accumulated to
find the original partition settings for that drive (yes, I did write
them down, but I've moved since then and they could be anywhere among
thousands of other pieces of paper) - but will that even do me any
good ? I am reasonably sure that nothing has been written to the
drive since the partition table was lost - can I recreate the old one
and access all the old information ? Is there something else I can do
to get at the Linux partitions on that drive ? (... and then
immediately copy everything across to the good (and now bootable)
drive). Or, should I accept that I've lost 3 months worth of
news/mail/files/changes/programs (or maybe pay lots of money to a data
recovery service ? ) ?
Also: the read_intr messages I was getting from the 2.5 Gb drive - do
they mean that the drive has "gone bad" ? (a DejaNews posting I read
suggested that that meant the drive had more bad sectors than the
BIOS/drive/something-or-other could cope with - is that the case ?).
So, to summarise again : I have two problems. A hard drive that may
be going bad or gone bad, but I could (for a while) still read the
data from. Partition tables that have gone bad. I need to at least
recover from the partition tables - if I can do that and copy the old
stuff over, I can reformat (low level format ?) the 2.5 Gb drive and
install things afresh on there.
If you can help, contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], or post
here (but I don't guarantee being able to catch replies here, due to
lack of time and having to deal with a stolen bicycle too :-( )
[1] I don't know that there neccessarily would be any - but I'm not
convinced enough that there wouldn't be, either. Besides, it was
about time to do a clean install, and then keep better track of any
changes I make to the system configuration.
Thanks in advance,
David.

There are win printers, but this isn't one of them. As someone else
points out, it is well supported for OS2. If some other lexmark printers
show up in printtool (or whatever driver list you have) you might try that
driver.

See the URL below for more details; the quick answer is that it is not

Subject: Is it the Mouse or the Video Display?
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 08:49:44 -0600
Hi. I have a problem (of course!)
First, a preface: I am what used to be called a "computer hobbyist,"
back before we all got so serious with our boxes, using them to make
money, in businesss, etc. Oh, I still have to use my computer at work
to DO work, but I love to tinker.
Way back in 1993, I bought a new 486-66 (generic clone), and decided
that I really didn't like that Windows thingie that everyone was
beginning to use, since it wasn't "32-bit" like my new computer. So I
installed OS/2 2.0, and the rest was history. I used OS/2 up until
about a year and a half ago, when it was obvious I couldn't get any work
done at home with it (since we were using NT at work, and the apps
wouldn't go on my OS/2 system).
However, as you might imagine, I got a LOT of experience, tinkering with
the OS/2 system, applying patches, upgrades, fixpaks, adding hardware
and trying to get OS/2 to recognize it.
I thought those days were gone forever.
Then, the other day, I splurged and bought a new computer system for
home, came (of course) with Windows 98 and all the trimmings. A nice
machine, which the wife and I can use for our productivity stuff at
home.
But here is my old 486, still perfectly good, just sitting there waiting
to be retired.
So, on a hunch, I bought a copy of Red Hat Linux 5.2 at the store where
I purchased the new machine. Only $20. I'd heard a lot about it (and
remember that Linux advocates had often spilled over onto the
comp.os.os2.* newsgroups back when I used to haunt them myself). I was
intrigued, and had the idea that this could signal the resumption of my
"hobbyist" career put on the shelf when I abandoned (reluctantly) OS/2.
Well, I finally got the install begun last night. So far so good, but
of course I've already run into a problem with (I'm sure this is no
surprise to most reading here) hardware compatibility.
Now, I've got old, "legacy" hardware. The 486 is and ISA bus machine,
and the video card is a Diamond SpeedStar 64 ISA, which I believe uses
the Cirrus Logic chipset. As far as I can tell, the install routine was
able to pick up the display, and "configure" it. The mouse is
problematic; it's a three-button job I got for about $15 at Wal-Mart
when my last Microsoft Mouse went kablooey. On the bottom of the mouse,
there is a slider switch you can set for "MS AM" (not sure what the "AM"
stands for--"adorable mouse?") and "PC AT". It has a PS/2 plug on the
end, but came with an adapter which I simply plugged into the COM1 port
when I was using Windows 95.
Anyway, for some reason, when I startup up the X Windows system, it
comes up O.K., but the MOUSE doesn't seem to work. The cursor just
flies all over the place, all around the periphery of the screen,
seemingly uncontrollable.
I THINK that the window manager is FVWM2 (at least I remember seeing
that designation somewhere on the screen); someone here familiar with
Red Hat 5.2 will probably know. Anyway, I can't get the X Windows
environment to function; very frustrating.
What do any of you think? Any suggestions for "fixing" this problem?
Oh, BTW, the setup is (off the top of my head): i486DX2-66 all-ISA, 20MB
RAM, 1.03MB Conner HD, 24X Toshiba ATAPI CDROM, Diamond SpeedStar 64 ISA
Video with 1 MB RAM, Iomega ZIP Drive (Parallel).
Thanks for any help you could render.
Regards.

Hello Paul!
I have had success in configuring a Permedia-2 based system for hw
accelerated OpenGL. Please look on my homepage for further
instructions:
http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~tron/linux/pm2conf.html
It is a pre-alpha driver, but it works. Hopefully, the graphics chip
companies begin to recognize soon that Linux is widely used for scientific
visualization, much more than Win NT at my work for example (the trend
is less NT in the future). Until then the 3Dfx and 3Dlabs
Permedia/GLINT products are the only ones supported by a free driver
(the driver should be free because it is free for Win, too).
I haven't tried Quake II yet, but it should work with any OpenGL
compatible driver (like the Mesa driver used in my configuration).
Thanks to S.u.S.E. and the Mesa team for the great work!
Greetings,

You need to set the port address as well as the IRQ and UART settings.
Also, make sure that your changes are taking effect by typing
setserial /dev/ttys4.
I have had a bad experience with this modem however.
I was able to get a MultiModem ZPX PCI "working" on my box (Redhat 5.2,
2.0.36 kernel). It was able to respond to commands, dial out, etc.. However,
I found that the modem failed to *consistently* work properly -- either
in win98 or linux. The problem which I would have is that it would work
once or twice after I installed it, but after rebooting a couple of times
it would become non-responsive in linux, and in win98 I
would get "couldn't open port" error messages. The only way to fix it
was to take out the board and put it in another PCI slot. Tech support
at multimodem eventually (after trying a couple of fixes) suggested that I
get an external modem. Bzzzttt. Wrong answer. I am currently trying to
get a refund.
Hope that you have better luck than I did...
