Subject: LS120 and ftape
Date: 16 Feb 1999 03:28:12 GMT
My system has no floppy devices other than my HP T3000 floppy tape drive.
When my system comes up the /var/log/messages file indicate that it cannot
find any floppy controller:
Feb 14 12:05:45 localhost kernel: ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
Feb 14 12:05:45 localhost kernel: ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
Feb 14 12:05:45 localhost kernel: floppy0: no floppy controllers found
Is this because I have no floppy disk drives installed?
My LS120 ATAPI floppy drive is found and works fine, but this is not
considered a floppy device, it looked at as /dev/hdd.
The problem is that I cannot use my floppy tape drive. When I try to use it
I get the following I/O error written to the screen:
/dev/ftape: Input/output error
and the following messages are written to the messages file:

Hi
You can install Linux on your system with Win98. No need of reformatting for
linux. Start installing Linux and let me know if you have aby problem. Its
very easy to install. Just follow the steps which is diplayed on monitor.

You can connect it to your serial port with no troubles. Why do you need to
use the parallel port?

The main benefit of a pre-installed system is the time you save,
both selecting the hardware and setting up the software.

Ok, I'll bite. What's the point of capturing under Linux if you're going to
reboot into Win95 to edit? There would be zero benefit to capturing under
Linux...

I found my own problem, the floppy controller was disabled in the BIOS.
Once enabled I was able to use ftape.

I strongly suspect that the PCI modem you are using is not emulating an
8250 or compatible UART, and as a result Linux cannot find it.
Try booting your computer off a clean DOS disk, and see if the MODE command
can find the port (eg MODE COM3: ).
Alternatively, check the documentation that came with the modem to see if
the modem is DOS compatible. I went through this myself, where the box
said yes, and the documentation said no - turned out the box was wrong.
Personally, I think that the PCI modems are just another ripoff like
winmodems. Until Rockwell publishes the necessary documentation for the
PCI chips they use, Linux won;t touch them.

I have a Nokia DTP-2 Ver II PCMCIA Data Card installed in an NEC Versa
M/75, and I'm having problems with the card wandering.
Basically, when I reboot Linux (shutdown -r now) it configures the card at
alternatively ttyS2 or ttyS16, eg:
reboot Laptop - card is at /dev/ttyS2
reboot again - card is at /dev/ttyS16
reboot again - card is at /dev/ttyS2
and so on
Has anyone seen similar behaviour, and found a way to fix the device ?
Thanks,
Sean

Daniel;
Here's the scoop to run Matrox card get the latest X server, version 3.3.3.1
I believe and install it. This version of the X server corrected several
problems on different chip sets I use. While the MGA has been supported
for a while now the G200 support is just coming on line.
You will need the SVGA server along with everything else such as the fonts,
libs etc. Personally I even install the "devel" files. Run the config
utility and you should be all set.

No questions this time around!
I simply wanted to share with the users of this NG that I now have my
RedHat 5.2 up and running well. So far, everything is working fine. As
a new Linux user, this is an accomplishment for me.
BTW, searching DejaNews for answers to my problems was very helpful.
Solved both my sound card question and my printer problem this way.
Took all of 5 minutes. The Linux HOW-TO's on Metalab (formerly Sunsite)
were very helpful as well.
To other new users, please take my advice:
1) RTFM (Read the f***ing manual, I mean the fine manual!) I got
two books that have helped me alot with commands and general
info. It is worth the money.
2) SEARCH DejaNews. I found many answers to my problems
there in a very short period of time. Very useful.
Thank you to everyone who takes their time to post answers to this NG.
For your effort, you have another convert!

agreed. i'm trying to find a way to capture the screen output; i want
to avoid videotaping the monitor. ick. i was dreaming that maybe
there was a way to route the tv-out from the marvel to the video-in
and then cap the video-in. <shrug> i would then reboot to w95 to

both and when selecting CD-ROM as the install medium, the CD-ROM cannot be

This is a supported device. The only thing I can think that would present a
