Subject: ISA/PNP card in a PCI bus
Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 20:23:54 GMT
I have two network cards in my computer for cable modem access and my
internal network. both cards are ISA PNP.
Network: D-Link DE220 ISA PNP Lan Adapter i/o = 02a0-02bf irq = 12
SMC EtherEZ (8416) i/o 02C0-02DF irq 11
My question is will an ISAPNP card on a newer PCI bus work? Do I have
to use ISAPNPTOOLS to configure? When I recompile the kernel should I
set the cards as modules? I heard that you can use loadlin instead of
lilo to configure the cards. Where should I start???
What about my pci modem card. How do I configure?
I am using RedHat 5.2.

Sounds like a lilo.conf problem. Make sure your initrd is set up correctly,
or compile the SCSI support directly into your new kernel.
I, too, find your dillema confusing, because I just shipped a dual
Xeon 400 out the door with the 2.2.1 kernel with no problem. Stock Red
Hat 5.2 w/updates from their updates site, only specialness I did was
compiling the SCSI support directly into the kernel rather than using
the initrd mechanism.

That is the wrong driver - you should be using the Realtek 8129/8139
driver (and getting the updated version from the authors site which is far
more stable than the one included in the kernel source even though they
show the same version number)

To my knowledge only 3Com produce a 100baseT ISA network card as the ISA
bus is not ideal for such high bandwidth. I know nothing about the card
per se.

This sound card has its irq and dma programmed via the driver once the
address is known.
What IRQ and DMA are you trying to use? It may be something as simple as
trying to use IRQ 7 or IRQ 12 for the sound card (IRQ 7 is used by the
printer port, IRQ 12 by the PS/2 mouse, neither is registered as "in use"
by the kernel but they're eaten by the respective driver).

Try looking in /var/log/messages for the exact error messages. Report back
to us and let us know.

There are several other Windows NAT products out there; maybe one of
them is easier to set up.
IMO, the best method for someone who uses Linux is to put the modem on
the Linux box (I'm assuming a real modem, not a junky WinModem) and use
IP masquerading. Works really well (except for a few network games and
such that make some bad assumptions about everyone having a real IP
address with all ports wide open), and it's free, but it's non-trivial
to set up. If you want to try it, first read the PPP HOWTO and get to
the point where you can connect your Linux box to the net. Then read
the IP Masquerading mini-HOWTO and web search for the Linux IP
masquerading help page, and follow the directions.

I currently support the tpconfig utility (Synaptics
Linux touchpad driver -- www.compass.com/synaptics). Anyway
I just released the latest version to fix a problem with
the 2.2.X kernel. The next enhancement I would like to
add is to make it work while either gpm and/or X is
running. From what I know from the initial author of
tpconfig, the PS/2 port does not support sharing and
this is the reason why tpconfig hasn't support running
itself while gpm and/or X is running.
What I'm looking for is suggestions/pointers on how to
add this functionality to tpconfig (run on top of X).
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks,
Bruce

Hi
I'have RedHat Linux 5.2 with Kernel 2.2.1
Ican't have my Zip Zoom scsi card recognized by the system.
scsi support and scsi disk support are built into the kernel but I get
the following message during boot:
SCSI: 0 HOSTS
SCSI: Not Detected
The driver aha152x with proper parameters is loaded as a module.
If I use insmod aha152x.o I get a message saying:
init_module: device or resource busy
Hepl will be really appreciated. Thanks a lot!

sndconfig enables me to change setting easily. I have 2 choices for
MAD16 soundcards. Both don't work. Got message: settings in use or
something like that. I checked all the settings under Windows (sorry),
MAD16 config doesn't show the correct I/O for my device (should be
103-107, 220-22F or 380-38D). Soundblaster 16 does have all the correct
settings and I don't get error message, but then it asks me if I heard
the sound....NO! What kind of sound file is it, midi?
(Don't know if any other systems have sndconfig.)

Watch out: "passive/manual" switches are no good if you use higher
resolutions (eg. 1024*768, 1200*1024, etc.). You'll get a ghosting
effect, where all windows will be doubled. Casper at work.
Also, there's the problem of turning connections on and off through
the switch: Remember to switch to the right PC when booting it,
otherwise it will complain it can't find a keyboard, and the OS won't
load the mouse driver.
Finally, although NT allows your "unplugging" mouse/keyboard during a
session (ie. switching to another PC), 9x will disable the mouse if
you do this -> you'll have to reboot or switch to DOS to have the
driver reloaded. Uncool.
"Active" switches cost a lot more (eg. 8-port OmniView costs over
$500), but they don't suffer from the problems above.

Hello,
I've a sound card Acer MAGIC S22.
I could not set it up on Red Hat 5.2.
For windows95, readme file recommended:
IOAddress = 530
IRQ = 10
DMADAC = 0
DMAADC = 1
I do not know why but set as
IOport 220h
IRQ IRQ5
DMA DMA1
in sndconfig tool,
I selected MAD16 and gave options as aboves.
But the sound card does not work.
Does anybody have any idea?

Hi,
I've asked something like this before and got great answers but now the
problem has changed a bit.
I'm fine-tuning my kernel and now it stopped recognizing my SCSI CDROM
and I can't for my life figure out why. It recognizes my SCSI card and
the two harddrives that are on it, but not the CDROM.
I definitely have the following things enabled:
1. SCSI Support
2. SCSI Support for my card (this part obviously works)
3. SCSI CDROM
What else should I try enabling. (The kernel I'm tweeking with is
2.0.35)
Thanks!

I have a Compaq Contura 410 laptop that I recently replaced its 2.5''
hard disk for
the Toshiba MK6409MAV 6GB disk. Linux is up and running but.... during
boot, the kernel reports:
hda: TOSHIBA MK6409MAV, 6194MB w/0kB Cache, CHS=13424/15/63 ,
i.e., no Cache, however the vendor reports 512kB Cache. This is my
sencond replacement of a hard disk. My first replacement was also for a
TOSHIBA 810MB hard disk but the kernel correctly reported its 120kB
Cache.
I was wondering if somebody knows if the kernel (2.0.36) is not reading
the value correctly from my hard disk or if my hard disk is broken. Is
there any other means of checking how much cache I have in my hard disk?
