You should use "xtvscreen -bpp 15", since the 16bpp mode of the TNT cards is
only 15bpp deep. xawtv probably has a similar option. This is a bug of the
xserver.

I don`t know about support for such keyboards. I haven`t seen them being used
in Japan. Maybe you should post this to the mailing list of the Tokyo Linux
User Group (TLUG), or have a look at their web page (http://tlug.linux.or.jp).
They have lots of tips on how to use Japanese on a Linux machine.

Hi,
Currently, CompUSA has a US$30 rebate for the above drive and the price
after
the rebate is US$199. This sounds like a good bargain. I am thinking to
purchase one and use it as the main hard drive for my web server under
Linux.
Is it a good idea to use this Maxtor 13.6GB Ultra DMA hard drive as the main
hard drive for a web server under Linux?
Thanks.

Does anyone know what models of 9 track drives (if any) are supported
by Linux? Also, same question for 3480/3490 tape drives.
If you attach a 9 track drive to Linux, is there any software that
will allow it to read/write IBM compatible tapes (EBCDIC), or will it
be limited to handling tapes in tar format?

This also provide the necessary load and shouldn't

Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 16:12:52 GMT
I recently got a Netserver LC3 that contained two HP Netraid 3si cards (aka
AMI Megaraid 438, Revision B4). I have tried the Linux AMI Megaraid driver,
including the latest version, included in Alan Cox's 2.0.37 prepatches, but
no matter what version I try, when I insert the module, the box freezes up.
Has anyone else had luck getting this controller to work under Linux?
TIA.

Subject: 5 button mouse???
Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 17:11:48 +0000
Hi
I am fairly new to Linux, and have just upgraded (in the end went for a
clean install) RH5.2. Previously, under RH5.0, I had no problem
configuring my mouse for left handed mousing. I was able to do it from
within xwindows using the graphical menu system. The mouse is an older 2
button MS serial mouse. This wont work under 5.2, the change just isnt
implemented, although no error message.
So, using xmodmap instead, (as indicated in the man page) with
xmodmap -e "pointer = 2 1"
(I also tried 3 2 1 as well)
I receive the following error message:
bad number of buttons, must have 5 instead of 3, I error encountered,
aborting.
I tried a 3 button serial mouse next ( a Primax venus mouse), exactly
the same error message!
Along the way, I have tried, in mouseconfig, setting both mice
(separately of course <g>) as various generic and named mice with the
appropriate number of buttons, and with and without the option of
emulated 3 buttons.
Any (helpful) ideas anyone?
TIA

I'm pretty much a newbie in Linux and I'm trying to use my HP820 Cxi

I downloaded it and when I try to "make 820" I always get an error

To be honest I don't know whether this results from something wrong in
the scripts or Makefile or from me trying make 820 in the wrong
way/directory/file permissions?
I would really appreciate your help :-)

Could it be the X server tries to use 32-bit depth instead of 24-bit? I read that
24-bit packed color wasn't supported by all drivers; you should check the docs
for your server...

Ok, I admit it, I bought one without checking the news groups first.
Now that I have checked though, it looks like folks have been trying to

reliably?
I tried 2.0.36, and hit the I/O errors most folks did, so I struggled
with the 2.2.1 upgrade, and finally was able to boot my system and have
it recognize the tape on /dev/ht0. When I try to tar (tar cvf /dev/ht0
/root) I receive a trap screen.
If anyone has it working, I sure would appreciate any hints or tips,
otherwise, it'll have to be relegated to, ugh sigh whimper, my NT

Hi all!
Can you guys recomend what used ISA networking card should I buy?
I am going to network 2 computers. The other one already is a PCI
full-duplex 100Base-TX/10Base-T with Reltek 8139 chip (ne2000 for PCI).
Should it influence my decision as to what to buy? I have heard that ne2000
clones are poor performers.
What transmission speeds do you suppose I will be able to get out of it? I
know 100Base is capable of 200 Mbps in full duplex mode. Any ISA cards match
that?
Also, how safe is it to buy from online auctions, like Ebay? There seems to
be tons of old hardware for sale there...
Thanx a lot for any input!

To get a useful answer you probably need to give more information: (e.g.
what type of card, what resolution & depth; whether there are specific
applications that cause problems etc.)
There is a fairly long-running discussion of a possibly similar problem
going on on the Linux-tecra mailing list. At present all we really know
is that some applications which use "home-made" toolkits (e.g. xv) lock
the Tecra laptops (S3 Virge card) rock solid when moving the mouse over
pulldown menus.

Check www.storagereview.com for drive comparisons. Maxtor makes very
good IDE drives these days. For the money they usually can't be beat.
Whether it's a good idea depends on what you do with your web server.
If it's a heavily loaded commercial site, it may be worth the money
to buy expensive high-end SCSI drives like Seagate Cheetahs. If load
is moderate, disk performance is not a major bottleneck, and cost is
important, Maxtor drives are a good buy.
