Most hard drive manufacturers have downloadable utilities that include
low-level formatters. Search the www for your HD's manufacturer.
But Torsten asked a very valid question. What are you trying to
accomplish?

Congratulations. You are the proud owner of a Windows-only
modem. The modem enumerator you mention is the windows only uart
simulator that prevents the non Linux world from being able to use
that hardware, as the manufacturers of such equipment have chosen only
to write those programs for windows, and probably they figure that the
rest of the world knows better, or at least knows that one would get
much better modem and computer performance with a hardware based
modem, though it would cost at least $2/unit more to build those, and
the windows crowd would be quite happy as long as they can get into an
AOL chatroom every now and then, and get their email, plus browse the
web...
You need a modem, and unless you need to move your machine
often, you would more than likely be happier with a goo external one.

First of all, we need to distinguish the terms. For anyone
trying to run Linux, anything that won't run under Linux is likely to
be considered in the same effective category as a "Winmodem", but as
that term is actually trademarked by a company -(3com or Diamond?)- no
other modem manufacturer can claim or advertise their modems as being
a "Winmodem" though none of us really care about that difference. That
doesn't stop anyone from making or selling a software, "host
controlled", or "controllerless" modem, since they can shave a few $$
of the per unit price, and still pass them off to the same folks that
they duped into getting Windows, as most of them won't know or care
about the differences.
Which ones do you have that aren't soft modems? (Q: for Bob
Stickel)-- I've returned so many Aopen PCI modems that I am not
willing to buy another one without hard model info from someone who
actually ran it under a non-windows environment.

No, I have the card, You do not need the PnP tool
Using the 2.2.x kernel.
you need to enable the prompting for new drivers in one of the first 2 menus of:
make menuconfig
You need to remove all sound drivers except the first line in the sound menu
which enables you to select the sound card and
for the AudioPCI and Creative PCI64 drivers.
I have the AudioPCI [*] and the Creative PCI64[M]
Nothing else must be selecte in the sound Configuration
do not forget to rebuild the kernel
make dep
make clean
make modules
make modules_install
make install
reboot
The AWE32 or AWE64
ARE NOT the SAME as
the PCI64 or PCI128
they are all 16bit sound cards, but they have different chips and interphases
The AWE can not use the PCI drivers and the PCI can not use the AWE drivers

Go to your system Properties and look in ports... if you only
see COM 1 listed, then you need to install the com2 port first. (let
windows find it? Then the modem should work just fine as a non-PnP
device)

If you have a modem (I have the same one you) set to non-plug-n-pray, you
have to tell windows to search for the new com port first. (Windows
isn't too smart...)
You may then have to reinstall your driver. I'd suggest using the latest
"inf" from the 3com web site.
Hope this helps!

I don't know how it is formatted, but if it is high-level
formatted with anything that win95 can read, then Sprinrite 5.0 by
Gibson reasearch can accomplish anything that you can do by a
low-level format, and save your data too. That is a fairly drastic
sted to low-level format an IDE drive, and not a casual thing to do to
a SCSI on either. "Are you Sure? Y/N" <g> If it really needs this,
then you probably really need a new hard drive anyway... :-((

Amiga floppies did this, without the ECC though... which led to relatively
high error rates, and errors migrating around the track. Half a good idea.
If you REALLY shaved things to the limit you got almost 100% of the
theoretical capacity... about 970K on a nominal 1000Ko floppy.

There are uniprint parameter files for the 610 that should let
Ghostscript and the uniprint driver run your printer at 720x720. See
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/aladdin/doc/Devices.htm#Uniprint
Alternatively, I think the bjc600 driver should also let you print at
720dpi.

Subject: Colorado parallel port tape backup not working
Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 00:09:26 GMT
All,
I have a Colorado 8GB tape dfrive (parallel port) and it is as dead as a dodo
with both kernel 2.2.0 and the very latest ftape, so I
know that it's not a version problem
I have IRQ=7, DMA=3 and IO=0x3BC.
I know that the parport and parport_pc settings are correct
as I can use plip without very problems (BTW, folk, PLIP is
GREAT!), and also I can print. Everything is loaded as modules
so the parallel port can be shared between these various functions
by the appropriate apps.
A big pat on the back and a massive "well done" to the guys who programmed
the parallel port handling in 2.2.0, BTW.
Anyway, ftape is dead. Totally dead. The Colorado sits there in stoic silence
and ftape.o itself hangs on insmod. I have tried using both the
trakker device as well as the FC10 device.
BTW, there are no settings for the trakker section in MCONFIG to
set the IRQ, DMA or IO port.
Well, that's it.
Hope that it is of use to someone, and if anyone reading this can suggest
a fix, please email me!
Thanks,
Brad

The BJC-7000 is purported to work well with the bjc600 Ghostscript

I know the bjc600 driver works with the 4xxx series BJC. To get it to do
