Good Luck. I was only able to get it to work w/ 16 colors. XFree86 says
they just received the code in Nov. 98 and will be supporting it in a future
release.

I can mount my Toshiba XM3501 without a problem.
I use mount -r -t iso 9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom.
/dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/scd0 on my system.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

OK. Let me say that I have RH 5.2, it was very simple to install, and
after a few weeks, I even got brave enough to upgrade to Kernel 2.2.1,
which is running great.

Anyway, all you need to do is boot (either from the boot disk or the CD),
and the Linux install program will start after you press ENTER. Follow
the directions, and you'll have Linux installed in anywhere between 5 - 45
minutes, depending on the speed of your computer and the number of
packages that you install.

Paritition at least 2gb for it if you can, and 128mb of swap.

As for sound, RH 5.2 is pretty good about that... just make sure that your
card isn't a PnP card that has to be initialized by a DOS or Windows
driver... that can cause problems. An inexpensive SB 16 works great,
because the SB driver is the (IMHO) easiest to use and setup.

As for the modem, what is it being configured for? If you're configuring
it for PPP, you'll use "linuxconf" which sets up PPP and other network
connections, as well as users, and a TON of other stuff.

If you're CD-ROM is ATAPI/IDE, then it will work under Linux without you
having to do a single thing.

If you have a SCSI CD-ROM or hard disks, well, I'm not sure exactly how
that proceeds.

And, for touch-monitors, I am not even certain if Linux contains that
support yet-- but if you program, you can add it yourself.

Could you please elaborate on "applying fsck on the device special file of the

I have an ATI Xpert@Play 98, 8MB
I did initially have problems with X Windows because it didn't quite
support the chipset, because of newer cards putting thier RAMDAC
internally, Xwindows only saw the first 64k of the ram on board... The
latest version of XFree86 (X Windows) 3.3.3.1 has support for these cards,
and works great!

Subject: Can't find 2 GIG on HD.
Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 07:58:24 -0500

I bought a new 10 Gig Maxtor Hard drive to do my first Linux install.
First, I used the utility which came with the hard drive to create 2 5
Gig windows partitions (D: and E: drives). I then started the Red Hat
install and came up on Disk Druid. I deleted the second 5 Gig partition
(the E: drive) but the "available" disk space field only jumped up 3
Gig. I decided to continue the install and made 4 logical partitions
(under 1 3 gig extended partition) which filled up the 3 Gig. The table
now looks like this:
device cylinder range type
/dev/hdb1 1-648 Windows FAT32
/dev/hdb2 649-1024 extended
/dev/hdb5 649-700 logical
/dev/hdb6 701-900 logical
/dev/hdb7 901-975 logical
/dev/hdb8 976-1000 logical

Everything seems to be working fine in Linux except I cannot recover the
lost 2 Gig of drive space. I run fdisk in Linux and attempt to add a new
primary partition and it comes back and says no available sectors. I
then ran fdisk in DOS and it shows 2 Gig of "available" sectors.
However, when I choose to add a primary or extended partition, it claims
that they are already there and won't allow me to add. It seems that I
lost everything above the 1024 cylinder (through appox. 1250). At this
point I would not mind to just capture it as a 2 Gig windows E: drive.
Thanks in advance for the assistance.
Dan

We're running RedHat 5.1.

Same here. Just to make it more fun, the card works occasionally. Sometimes,
you boot the system and it comes up just fine -- no problems whatsoever.
However, 95% of the time the NIC is simply dead. No error messages, no
IRQ conflicts ... just no data.

It would be nice to have more details about what "buggy" means.

Well, we're running pcmcia-cs-3.0.0 ... so my next step is to upgrade to
the current version (3.0.9). According to the release notes, there have
been improvements to the driver.

Thanks to David Hinds and crew for all their hard work in PCMCIA support!

Use the ppp setup tool that is in YaST. In fact I don't know if it is in
6.0, I only have 5.2 but I would assume it is there. It is under System
Admin -> Configure Hardware -> modem .....
That will do it all for you, I assume you will have to use the default
PPP setup and add your own phone number, username and password. I
recomend not using diald at first.

This is because the structure of MSDOS file system and VFAT file system
is the same. The only difference is that VFAT can produce special
directory entries for long file names. If all your files on a VFAT disk
conform with 8.3 naming conventions, it is the same as a MSDOS disk. As
a newly formated disk in most cases contains no files, they all conform
the 8.3 naming conventions, and so the disk is a MSDOS and a VFAT disk
at the same time. :-)

PS Is the cdrom drive a Pioneer drive? I've just repalced my Pioneer
drive on the grounds that it is unwilling to share an IDE channel
with another ATAPI drive when it is jumpered as slave. Just out of
interest.....

The fact that the CD-ROM is plugged to the sound card has nothing to do
with your drive not detected. Not sure about FreeBSD, for Red Hat, you
have to specify the port & interrupt during installation. You have to
type

cdu31a_port=address, int irq (e.g. 0x340, 7)

Hop this helps.
