Supposedly the 3c509 module that comes with the RedHat 5.2 distribution
does have support for this card and the other 3c905 variant. I, however,
had no luck with it and was forced to recompile the kernel with the new
3c905B Vortex drivers in it. After doing that everything worked just
dandy.

not only you have to have the right xservers for the xwindows also you have to
modify startx. inthe server arguement add -bpp 16 or -bpp 24 or -bpp 32

The X-Server from my Linux PC is starting with a colourdepth of 8 bpp.
If i drive Linux to runlevel 2 and type startx -- -bpp 16 it works fine
with 16 bpp. I also modified the script usr/X11R6/bin/startx as follows:

clientargs=""
# serverargs=""
serverargs="-bpp 16"

It is also working correctly.

But if i drive Linux to runlevel 3 ( Default in /etc/inittab ), xdm will
start and the changes i did in
the script usr/X11R6/bin/startx have no effect. The X-Server
is working only with 8 bpp.

How can i make the X-Server starting with 16 bpp ?

Thanks in advance,

I just installed Linux (RedHat 5.2, the four disk super set), on
that exact machine, and had no problems whatsoever. The install will
detect the adaptec 2740,2840,2940. Go ahead and just install the thing as
normall and it will just work. I put two of the 9gig scsi drives in there
with no problems. I even mirrored a large partition on both of the drives.

And people think that Windows is easier...=)

You can buy RH at Best Buy now, but I'm not sure if that distribution includes
the SPARC stuff or only the x86 flavor.

Date: 22 Feb 1999 17:03:57 -0500

Hello,
I just ran across a new large-capacity tape backup system at
www.onstream.com. The drives look great for my purposes, but I need it to
work under Linux as well. I tried talking to a tech support representative,
asking him whether the drives behaved as a tape/removeable-media IDE or
SCSI device, in which case, they should run fine under Linux (I think). The
representative told me that I couldn't use the drives without special
drivers, and that they had no plans for Linux drivers. I would imagine that
these devices should "appear" as any other tape/removeable-media device, but
I wanted to know if anyone could give me a definitive answer.

Thanks.

On a very related issue, before motherboards had IDE, we used to buy
ISA/EIDE/VESA IDE controllers. Now since Linux will support up to four
controllers, is there anyone still making controllers, obviously for
the PCI bus these days, which can be used to add the other two?

The Duplidisk gives the reliability protection of RAID-1, but lacks the
performance benefit, since with traditional RAID-1, if you get multiple
reads to a single drive you can read one off the mirror, while with a
single virtual IDE device you don't get that benefit.

The NTX doesn't support the parallel port. The only option you have with

Subject: Re: ProAudio Studio (pas2.o) sound card and Redhat 5.2 ??
Date: 24 Feb 1999 13:28:36 GMT

Hi,
I've been having the same problem with my Proaudio Spectrum 16. I have the
SCSI interface on the card working and can access the CD-ROM connected to it.
I have not been able to get the sound portion of the card to work with Redhat
5.0 or 5.2 sound config utility.

After quite a bit of time on the phone with tech support, I got it to work for
a short time with the trial version of the commercial sound drivers from
Forefront Technologies. I turned off the computer and when I restarted it a
few hours later, the sound was no longer working. I called Forefront the next
day, but I guess they couldn't give me more help without me registering it, and
I didn't want to register and pay $20.00 without getting the trial version to
work from a cold boot.

When I switch over to the DOS/Windows 3.1 hard drive, the sound card works, so
it isn't a hardware problem. One day I might get brave enough and try
recompiling my kernel to see it this will get it working.

If you ever get it working, please post your method to the newsgroup. Good
Luck!

Is there a convenient way to operate a TEAC CD-C68E multi-disc CD ROM

The ide-cd driver works and also the applied program "cdload.c"

What i now miss is a convenient user interface, e.g. like a web-page,

Any ideas? Thank you for submitting your tips/tricks/hints!

Hi

Since the NCR 53c710 driver does not support EISA Controller you cannot
install Linux on Proliant 1000.

One more thing , to make Smart + Array controller bootable we need to first
install Linux on hard disk Connected to SCSI controller. As this is not
possible on your system you cannot install Linux unless we get a driver for
710 controller.

Subject: System performance on differrent processors. PPC, SPARC, ALPHA, and INTEL
Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1999 23:19:03 -0500

Hi All;

After installing the new kernel 2.2.1 on an old 586 laptop (133Mhz), and
seeing an amazing performance increase, I have to wonder how the kernel
performs on other architectures. Is the speed up I'm seeing Intel
specific or have the other platforms seen similar increases in performance?
To be honest I'm not even sure that the new kernel is avialable yet on PPC
or Alpha.

Is it safe to assume that most of the performance tweaking of Linux 2.2.1 is
targeted at I386? With the same generation kernel which chip set gets the
best performance out of the kernel Alpha PPC Sparc or Intel?

This question comes to mind because of the availibility of low cost PPC
based machines from Apple and IBM. In fact IBMs "giving a boost" to Linux
is what started me thinking about what would be the best hardware platform
to replace my P2 system.

The big question is given three 400Mhz systems one Intel, one PPC based and
one Alpha based which is going to perform best all around? I know this is
a hard question to ask, and the K7 may be the big contender, but only
recently has pricing of these other systems made thinking about it
worthwhile. Since I don't have access to this equipment comments from
someone in the kow would be helpful.

Dave
