Hi there,
I'm planning on getting a CDRW (with IDE interface)
for my Aptiva PC Pentium II. Can somebody make some suggestions
on which models would you recommend based on a good performance
(or even which ones to avoid). I'm using Mandrake 6.1
any comments would be appreciated.
thanks!

I wasn't using IE. I was using Netscape Communicator 4.72.
Check your settings. I just hit User Friendly with Communicator
for Linux. No Problem.

Hello all!
To me as a linux newbie that sounded very impressive but as I
found out some days ago: in the meatime there are some drivers
for winmodems/linmodems based on the modem from Lucent!
Those were my 2 cents.

You have to turn on sound in E and GNOME. Use the configuration tools
built for them.
I believe E's configuration tool is available via third mouse button?
It's one of them. GNOME's config is available from the GNOME menu.

Id recommend SuSE 6.3
it has a huge software package and as far as I know, 4 megs should be
sufficient when youre not planning to use X.

I've got a Speedcom VPI56SP fax/modem, internal PCI, however I've failed
to set it up under Linux Mandrake. I've heard that these kind of modems
are usually very troublesome to set up under Linux, since they're PCI and
winmodems (although I'm not sure whether mine is in fact a winmodem). Can
anyone shed some light on what I should do to set up this modem and
whether there are any drivers available to it? the link to the
manufucturer's site its this: http://www.speedcom.com.tw/vpi56sp.htm

Hi,
I've got a Compex FL100TX Ethernet card. It gets detected, everything
is set, interface is up, but it just doesn't seem to transmit a byte
of data. The card works fine with WinNT, so it's not broken or anything.
How can I make this bloody thing work under Linux
(I'm using 2.2.14 kernel)

Bought a cheap ($180) IDE 4/4/16 Philips CD-RW 460 in October. Zero
problems in Linux; even managed to burn an audio CD at 4x and run Netscape
at the same time(!) If I were you, I'd stay away from Sony and the Iomega
ZIP-CD, as ISTR people reporting weird problems with some of these.
(They're not completely compatible with the ATAPI and mmc-3 specs...) A
similar Philips drive is available on pricewatch.com for about $150 US,
but this one is 4/4/24!
If speed and quality matter more than price, get a Plextor and go SCSI.

You can cut off a limb of your filesystem tree and graft it on somewhere
else quite easily. The kicker is, you must have the room to do it.
I'd get a second hard drive and make it /usr but...
You could:
mkdir /copy
cd /copy
mkdir home
cp -a /home home
mkdir usr
cp -a /usr usr
Then, you could:
joe /etc/fstab
And, comment out the mounting commands for /home and /usr. Don't jack
with /swap.
Then:
umount the proper partitions.
mv the /copy/home to /home
mv the /copy/usr to /usr
You will need to do this at the command line as you will temporarily
deprive yourself of X and alot of userspace tools. As I said, it will
take lots of space on your / root partition. It would probably be
better to get a second harddrive and use it as space for your other
directories.
The df command will let you know how much free space you have on the
root partition.

Try Ontracks 'Disk Manager, DiskGo !' This is a self booting disk that
contains a utility that will fill a drive with zeroes. This will wipe out

Bootable DOS Floppy.
FDISK /MBR
Boot into Linux install.
Use LINUX's FDISK to clean the disk and make your partitions.

If all else fails you could also low-level format, but that should be your
LAST resort. What is the exact error message you are getting? Did you try
fdisk /mbr to re-create the master boot record?
